W (4-2) 14/03/2020 - M2 vs Dereham 2 (A / L) WIN AGAINST LOCAL RIVALS! |
---|
MENS 2ND XI - 14/03/2020 VS DEREHAM 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 14/03/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 14/03/2020 HEADLINE: Win against local rivals! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Dereham HC RESULT: 4-2 Win REPORT: Travelling to an already relegated Dereham with a 15 man squad, City were confident that they could get another 3 points to consolidate their mid-table position. City started well and scored from an excellent George Bowman near post deflection, Bowman then turned provider as his squared ball fell to Matthew Brine who found the back of the net with ease. 2-0 HT After the break City lacked discipline in the centre of midfield and Dereham pegged back a goal before goals from Harry Gill and a second from George B meant that City had a commanding 4-1 lead, a late Dereham consolation goal wasn't enough to overturn a comfortable 4-2 away win.

MENS 2ND XI - 08/03/2020 VS HORNCASTLE 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 08/03/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 08/03/2020 HEADLINE: Thumping home win secures safety! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Taverham - Sand RESULT: 4-1 Win REPORT: After yesterdays very unfortunate defeat at home to league leaders Harleston, City faced a must win home game against Horncastle to seal safety and inevitably relegate the travellers. City started well with Richard Silvester firing home within the first 5 minutes. City however stumbled a little giving the ball away cheaply to regularly however the important 2nd goal game when Tom Hindle deflected home a PC. City were a lot more clinical going into the second half, creating many more chances with Gill adding City's 3rd and fourth goals. The crossbar and a shin on the line prevented further goals for City as Horncastle did score a consolation goal when Ali Cooke decided he did want to save at his near post. FULL TIME 4-1

L (2-3) 07/03/2020 - M2 vs Harleston Magpies 2 (H / L) WITH ALL THE ODDS AGAINST THEM CITY NEARLY PULL OFF A MIRACLE! |
---|
MENS 2ND XI - 07/03/2020 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 07/03/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 07/03/2020 HEADLINE: With all the Odds against them City nearly pull off a miracle! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Taverham - H20 RESULT: 3-2 Loss REPORT: Playing with just a bare 11 against top of the league Harleston, who travelled with a 15 man squad and manager things looked against City from the start... And they got worse when keeper Elwes accidently kicked one into the goal and a bad pass from the City defence left him exposed for another meant City were 2-0 down before even starting.... However a great run from H Gill set up Silvester for a great deflection meant City went into the break only 2-1 down. City were defending very well with Bailey playing a great 2nd game of the day alongside Crichton, a very unfortunate (And Incorrect) penalty corner scored Harleston's third goal before Harry Gill scored to make it interesting once again. The game opened up with City tiring and then Fred A pulling a hamstring making things even harder for the boys in Yellow. A last minute PC for City came and went as they eventually lost 3-2 but what an effort with just 11, good luck Harleston next year in the league above!

MENS 2ND XI - 29/02/2020 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 29/02/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 29/02/2020 HEADLINE: Close derby that should of been a draw really! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: The Den RESULT: 3-1 Loss REPORT: City went behind went Dragons scored from a penalty flick, following a foot on the line. City equalised from a well worked PC to make it 1-1 at half time. Both teams created numerous chances in both halves and I have to say it was a very even game when a draw would of been fair. However Dragons scored a rather fortunate deflected PC and a wonder third goal on the reverse to seal a tight 3-1 victory. We will see you next year for two more I would think close matches...

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Taverham - H20 RESULT: 7-3 Win REPORT: In this high scoring game their were plenty of goals, chances and opportunities for youngsters to shine. It was great to see young Patel, Lochore, Roy, Hyatt and Wilson shine on debut for the 2nd team and it shows what great futures these kids all have. In fairness UEA weren't the strongest but the kids will learn by playing against students, with 4 goals for Rafe and 1 for Mattie. A good day in the office!

MENS 2ND XI - 08/02/2020 VS ST IVES 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 08/02/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 08/02/2020 HEADLINE: Tought battle on the road sees City pick up valuable three points! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: St Ives Slow Pitch RESULT: 2-1 Win REPORT: City travelled to St Ives with another mixed team but this week having at least 1 sub! Bowman returned from injury meanwhile their were call ups for keeper Elwes, T Pallistar and S Hyatt. City started on the front foot moving the ball around well and created an early chance through Toby Pallistar who's reverse stick effort was well saved by the keeper. The game became very even with both teams slopping in possession going into the final third with both deference's on top. It was City however who again had the better chances with Tom Hindle seeing his effort cleared off the line. HALF TIME 0-0 Into the second half and the game remained the same with both teams sloppy going forward but it was again City who carved out the better chances with City having yet another shot cleared of the line, this time Bowman shooting. It was St Ives however who took the lead through a short corner with a neat deflection however this seemed to kick City into life who then scored through an excellent Tom Hindle finish before Hindle turned provider to Bowman who tapped in at the far post. City held on a late surge from the home side to claim three valuable points, which with a win the next weekend should seem the safe in Division 2N. POTM: Alex Scott

W (6-1) 01/02/2020 - M2 vs Long Sutton 1 (A / L) FANTASTIC AWAY PERFORMANCE WITH A BARE 11! |
---|
MENS 2ND XI - 01/02/2020 VS LONG SUTTON 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 01/02/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 01/02/2020 HEADLINE: Fantastic away performance with a bare 11! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Long Sutton Beach! RESULT: 6-1 Win REPORT: With high unavailability this week, City travelled to basement boys Long Sutton with a bare 11 but still confident of a good result following a very disapointing and undeserved defeat in the previous week against Pelicans. City started well and created early chances with the Sutton keeper making some good early saves. The pace of Chaney-Baxter and Gill caused problems early on and both went close to opening the scoring, before some determined play by Jonty Black set up Chaney Baxter for the first goal. Hindle then set up Pallistar for an excellent vollied finish for 2-0. Sutton were limited going forward but their star player then went on a mazey run and released a shot to hot to handle for keeper Millett. However just before the break a great run and ball from Fred Anthony was deflected home by skipper Ling to make it 3-1 at half time. After the break City knew the first 5 minutes were crucial as Sutton would push hard however the defence of Crichton, Bailey, Fox and Anthony held firm and limited Sutton to very few chances. With Sutton pushing they left themselves exposed at the back with the pace of Chaney-Baxter and Gill, with the latter finishing of a great individual run to make it 4-1. He then completed a very quick fire hattrick which included a very clear candidate for goal of the season with a fine reverse stick volley! At 6-1 City were cruising and after a disallowed penalty corner goal and missed penalty flick (Hindle!) could of made it more! FULL TIME 6-1 A really good performance showing that subs are clearly not needed!

---|
MENS 2ND XI - 25/01/2020 VS PELICANS 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 25/01/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 25/01/2020 HEADLINE: Very close game against 2nd in the league! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 1-0 Loss REPORT: Pelicans once again have proven tough opposition this season with heaps of experience and quality in their team. City 2s can be very proud of their efforts in this game as a very scrappy first half goal for Pelis meant they sealed a very tight game at Taverham 1-0. Pelis player of the match going to their GK for his wonder saves in the second half which meant that City couldn't quite get the equalising goal they deserved.

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: Following a crisis with availability this week, City were greatful for Matthew Brine, George Brine and Sam Clabon for making their first appearances of the season as City travelled to play a very strong looking Harleston 3rd XI. City played some great hockey in the first half and deserved went 2-0 up following goals from George Brine and Harry Gill. Harleston hit back to make it 2-1 at the break. Into the second half and City scored first thanks to a Jonty Black deflection before Harleston hit back again. A great run by Gill was tapped home by M Brine at the far post to make it 4-2 and give City some breathing space before Harleston rallied late on and scored a PC to make it interesting. However City held on for a much needed 3 points.

MENS 2ND XI - 04/01/2020 VS NORWICH CITY 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 04/01/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 04/01/2020 HEADLINE: Mince pies run off REPORT: Friendly VENUE: TRF RESULT: lots of goals REPORT: (Any connection with events that really took place at TRF is purely coincidental as the report has been ‘created’ by chief organiser but absentee, SB.) On a sunny if cool January morn, an eclectic selection of players roughly representing the 2s/3s/4s and 5s collaborated to produce an entertaining spectacle for the throngs, ney, hoards of spectators. The team, loosely called the seconds (no intended connection with servings of food over the festive period), started strongly with Jonty Black and Boycie ‘on fire’ despite the lack of brandy or Christmas pud! They deservedly took a 2-0 lead into the half time break courtesy of a delicious Boycie reverse stick shot and a penalty corner from the same player. Some imaginative reorganisation from the team loosely called the thirds (obvious connection to festive intake 😁) at half time saw them emerge the stronger and better organised side in the second half. A hat trick for Silvie (including an imaginative penalty corner variation....great control Pies) plus goals for Freddie Paterson and David Fletcher. With such a star studded cast it is hard to call out all the great performances but Rio Iaccarino caught the eye, as did young Seb Kimber in goal and not so young Frosty. Thanks everybody for your great club ‘family’ ethos.

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Somewhere a million miles away! RESULT: 3-2 Loss REPORT: Another new looking team travelled to take on Horncastle following the first games postponement. At least however we don't have to do this long trip again....

On arrival apart from fog the pitch was fine, this uncertainty had clearly played on the 2’s mind as they went 2 goals down early on A reply by Hindle meant city went in at the interval 2-1 down. Some great runs from Jack Ingham, JCB & Jack Luther. Captain Ling was in the thick of action, along with Silvester matching the Peterborough back 4 in a physical battle. Unfortunately for all City’s possession, & never say die attitude right until the end. The 2’s were unable to make their chances count & were punished by a Peterborough break late on to make it 3-1 In a game where city clearly made an enemy of one umpire early on in the first half were always facing an uphill battle regards umpiring decisions. Great attitude from all players start to finish Competent displays from Elliot Fox, Fred, Bales show the future is bright. Roll on UEA & feel the backlash of this disappointing result!

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 2-1 Win REPORT: City v Dereham is always a good encounter and this was no different. Dereham turned up with a mixed bag of youth and experience and took the lead early on. City rallied however with two good finishes from Richard Silvester to take a 2-1 lead into the break. City created plenty of chances but couldn't convert in the second half which left a nervy finish but City did enough to take all 3 points.

With a number of key players carrying injuries and having to resort to having Pies on the bench for the first half, City played some of the best hockey of the season so far against a team that had a number of current or ex National league players. Magpies scored 4 scrappy goals with Ben Millet performing some great stops in the city goal from a couple of short corners. Norwich were never cut open and the defense were not in real trouble through open play but being undone by turnover ball. Champagne moment goes to Silvy for his chest high conversion of a cross from the left slotting the ball home. If we perform like this for the rest of the season City will be pushing for promotion.

Building on previous good performances City put it all together last Saturday with some exceptional spells in the game and scored four team goals. A solid defence, that was never in particular difficulty throughout the game, held strong that enabled the midfield and forwards to show their flair at times and cause the Dragons defence trouble on most attacks. Lets bring this performance again next week when we play top of the league. Goals scored by Jack Luther, Tom Ling, JCB and Tom Hindle with POM Alex Scott.

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Taverham - H20 RESULT: 4-3 Win REPORT: With Bailey, Scott, Fretwell, Elliott, Black, Anthony all missing with a few up to the 1s skipper Ling was over the moon when D Fletcher and J Luther were both available as they joined to make a squad of 13. City started really well and led 1 minute in with Harry Gill firing home a penalty corner. City kept up the good work and good moves involving Bowman, Roy and Hindle in the midfield led to some good chances created but not quite converted. With chances missed City started to panic and allowed sutton into the game and were thankful to keeper Millett who made some good saves to keep the home side in front. City won a stroke at the end of the first half following a foot on the line, Hindle told no by the umpires skipper Ling stepped up to covert the flick and give City a 2-0 led into the break. Into the second half and City created 5/6 really good chances at the start of the half with the Sutton keeper once again forced into several good saves. City were left to rue these chances as Sutton pulled a goal back. At this point City panicked and with Pallistar yellowed for 5 minutes Sutton were on top. However it was during Suttons best spell that City scored a third with Silvester turning and firing home into the bottom corner. City then let Sutton in again and gave away another soft goal. 3-2. With less than 10 minutes to go Ling released and aerial for the on running Gill to fire home, 4-2! With 2 minutes to go City kept the crowd excited as more poor defending let Sutton in for a third, 4-3! However City saw out the final few seconds to give then their second victory of the season. After a shot from outside the D was rightly disallowed Pelicans broke quickly and scored. 2 more goals and it was not looking good going into half time, but a late reverse stick goal from Jack Luther gave the team hope of yet another comeback. Sadly we started the second half slowly and conceded a short corner. Another attempt at a comeback was on when Jack Luther scored again followed up by a goal from Harry Gill. Unfortunately Pelicans replied by slotting their 5th goal in. Late on in the second half Jonty Black scored but it was too little too late to stop Pelicans from claiming a 5-4 victory.

MENS 2ND XI - 28/09/2019 VS KETTERING 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: Comeback kings! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Wellingborough RESULT: 3-3 Draw REPORT: City arrived after the long journey confident of a win to get the season fully up and running. City started brightly with some good spells of possession and created a few half-chances. However this was ended by a neat Kettering after the ball was lost in midfield. Fairly soon after Kettering put away a short corner to go in to half time with a 2-0 lead that didn’t fairly reflect the city efforts. At half time we quickly identified what needed to be rectified and how we saw the second half panning out. This briefly went out the window when Kettering scored another short corner. This finally proved to be the kickstart city needed and we started to play some great hockey, with Fox, ling and Anthony finding more space out wide, with Anthony opening up those long legs and burning his man a few times. A short corner led to the first goal-the ball broke to Broadway who fired in. Following some robust challenges on the forwards another corner was eventually awarded. Pallister collected a wide injection and smashed it bottom bins. Game on. City kept on pushing until a few minutes from time the ball span kindly to silvester to tap home. There was still time for Millet to keep out a final short corner. City will feel that with another 5 minutes or the rub of the green from some questionable umpiring decisions, they could have come away with the win.

City started the brighter with a few early chances going a miss, UEA took the lead through there only short corner of the game. Millett made his other and only save in the first half as the half finished even. City then dominated the second half with Millett left a spectator with City winning several short corners and creating several chances but it felt it was going to be one of those days when City just wouldn't score. However the goal did finally come when great hold up play from Richard Silvester set up Harry Gill for an easy finish. City continued to create several chances but had to settle for a draw and pick up a point from the opening game.

City started well creating early chances with the Dragons keeper forced into making a few early saves. However against the run of play Dragons took the lead. The game then became a lot more even with chances at both ends however through an excellent finish Dragons took a two goal lead. City felt unjust with the chances coming and going but were finally rewarded with an excellent run by Josh Bailey setting up Tom Hindle for a simple finish. HT 2-1 Second half and after an even 5 minutes City completely dominated the half winning 7/8 short corners and creating many chances with slightly poor finishing and some great saves by the Dragons GK City were left frustrated. However Harry Gill finally equalised with an excellent low effort to beat the keeper. City continued to dominate and deservedly lead when Richard Silvester walked the ball into the goal following an excellent team move, 3-2 up. However city were slack in possession in the last 5 minutes and gave Dragons a sniff and they took their one chance and equalised as the game finished 3-3. Great game and sadly that deserved elusive win hasn't quite come yet. POTM: Harry Gill

D (2-2) 07/09/2019 - M2 vs Dereham 2 (A / F) CITY FIGHT BACK TO A DRAW |

MENS 2ND XI - 07/09/2019 VS DEREHAM 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 07/09/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 07/09/2019 HEADLINE: City fight back to a draw LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Dereham HC RESULT: 2-2 Draw REPORT: With a new look formation, a few new faces and a new coach things were looking bright for City's finest 2nd XI. A squad of 14 took to the old sandy pitch at Dereham HC in what was a rather warm sunny September Saturday! City started on the front foot pressing Dereham early on but early chances came and went and Dereham's experienced and strong midfield started to pull the strings, coupled alongside City's failure to find passes to yellow shirts (Sun must of been to bright!) The rather skilful and not so 2s player CJ for Dereham managed to dribble through the City midfield leaving both the City defence and Millett in goal rather exposed on two occasions with Dereham capitalising on two occasions. Millett also made a few other saves which kept City in the game and duly saving his wallet from fines post match. Despite Millett making several saves City created several chances and can count themselves unlucky to not have scored. HT 2-0 Two nil down and City had it all to do with the main focus on ball retention and to stop passing to people in red shirts. City really upped their game second half and took on the words from coach Iain Martin. City kept the ball much better and finally got on the scoresheet following more misses when Ben Plumb deflected home a Tom Ling cross. City smelt their was the chance of comeback and kept on hammering the Dereham goal and goalkeeper with Gill doing everything bar score on several occasions. Dereham created much less in the second half really being limited to PCs which Millett dealt with ease. The equalising goal was coming and it came when a delicious cross from Silvester was tapped home by Will Kidner. City created further chances with even Jim getting in on the act and nearly scoring the winning goal. Sadly the deserved winner never came and we settled for a draw, great comeback and look forward to Dragons next week!
