WOMENS MASTERS XI - 24/11/2019 VS CITY OF PETERBOROUGH O45 (H)
TEAM: Womens Masters XI
FIXTURE: Womens Masters XI VS 24/11/2019
HEADLINE: The 'Old Girls' show 'em how it's done!
A 15 strong squad and highly organised management team turned out on a gloomy Sunday afternoon to take on Peterborough. Moral was high and so were some of the players on the Deep Heat from the changing rooms. After 3 attempts to get the ‘City’ call in unison they headed out onto the pitch. Unsure of how strong the opposition were going to be City started well and began to gel as a team relatively quickly. There was quite a lot of end to end play but City dominated with determined tackling and some good movement around the area which saw Liz Hollis put the first goal away with a reverse stick shot. This seemed to fire Peterborough up a bit and they came back with more strength and determination to put City’s defence under pressure. Several short corners later City stayed strong and prevented Peterborough getting anything, other than frustrated.
With an “I want the ball taken ‘here’ not ‘there’” umpire at one end and a strange Korean at the other, combined with hand gestures from a feisty City defender the decisions were always going to be interesting and contested throughout.
The half time break gave City management a chance to supercharge the enthusiasm of the team still further and combined with several packets of sweets and painkillers City went out to do battle again.
City upped the pressure again in the second half not allowing Peterborough to gain any advantage from their ‘long ball’ style of game, quickly shutting them down with any spills at the back cleared and moved out of danger by a cool calm defence, an encouraging “get the ball out!” from Serena and a well-aimed boot for any issues in the goal area. Determination and persistence saw City score 3 more goals; Julia being in the right place (aka goal hanging) to put a lovely crossed ball behind the keeper, Caroline with a deflection at the P shot and Liz picking up her second goal from a scrap on the goal line. Peterborough nicked a consolation goal after winning a short corner in the dying moments of the second half to ruin City’s clean sheet.
All in all a great team performance and thanks to all our supporters and management. Now on to the next round with some Dragons to be slain..
WOMENS MASTERS XI - 17/11/2019 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS O35 (H)
TEAM: Womens Masters XI
FIXTURE: Womens Masters XI VS 17/11/2019
HEADLINE: Round 1 Win!
LEAGUE: Women’s O35 Masters
RESULT: 4-0 Win
It’s that time of the year again, when the womens O35 team wonder if two matches in two days is still a good idea?!...
Of course it is, we say now, while still buzzing from a 4-0 victory against a strong Bury team.
The match started at a fast pace, with both teams keen to win an early advantage. City pressed hard from the whistle, with Emma Hewitt and Lydia Lawrence making some great runs down the wings, but unfortunately city couldn’t meet the crosses in front of the net. Suzy had a fantastic match as play maker in the centre, stopping everything and anything that came her way and created numerous chances going forward.
The Bury defense struggled to clear the ball and it was Katie Gedge who scored city’s all important first goal just before the half time whistle blew.
After a very encouraging team talk from Coaches Rosie and Serena, City went out ready to finish to the job.
City continued to pressurise every Bury player at every opportunity, forcing them to Make mistakes. The second goal came 10 minutes in, with Carolyn Lumley, who smiled her way through the whole match, slotting home the ball from some great passing hockey as if we had been practising it on the training ground!
Shortly after Elizabeth confidently took on the Bury keeper, calmly, collected ‘buried’the ball firmly into the net. 3-0.
With spirits high and the goals flowing, City continued to attack and finished of the match with Emma Hewitt, a very welcome addition to the Masters team this season, with a perfectly placed shot, from the penalty spot.
Every single player deserves a mention from their 1st round match.
Anna Linsmith, made some great saves in the first half but clearly had everything under control.
The back line of Fongy, Sally, Allison, Leigh-Ann and Frankie were as solid as a rock. Suzy, Alex, Ange, Katie and Hanna worked well together in midfield and Lydia, Emma, Elizabeth and Carolyn certainly proved to much for the bury defense with their natural attacking flair.
Never any danger of it going to flicks, thank the lord!
Bring on round 2!
