WOMENS 6TH XI - 07/03/2020 VS LODDON 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 07/03/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 07/03/2020 HEADLINE: A much-needed point LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: nil-nil REPORT:This was an important game for City 6s with Loddon sitting below them in the league table. However, a huge number of unexpected injuries, illness and unavailability this week had left the usual line up seriously depleted for a game the team had hoped to win. Thankfully, several 7s players stepped in to help, despite some doubling up after playing a tough match beforehand. So with the bare 11 and one member playing despite still recovering from a nasty cold, City had to work out how to play as a unit despite the unfamiliar line up. The plan was to keep a clean sheet at least and aim for a point. It took a while for City to settle down and Loddon broke through into the D regularly, managing to work their 16s through and find a high player. Thankfully, City were able to mop up their attacks and begin to build an offence of their own with plenty of play in Loddon’s half. Rose Byrne, together with player of the match Sofia Hancy and Susan Matthews worked well together to patrol the midfield. Susan made some notable long passes across the forwards. City won several short corners and had lots of attacking play in the D but were unfortunately unable to find the net. Loddon upped their game in the second half and made lots of runs at City’s goal. However, working as a unit by now City kept them at bay and were pleased to take away a nil-nil draw and a much-needed point that will help keep them away from relegation. Shout out to all the players who stepped in to help today.

D (1-1) 29/02/2020 - W6 vs UEA 3 (A / L) A DRAW AND A HARD-EARNED POINT AGAINST HIGH-PERFORMING, SECOND-IN-TABLE UEA |

WOMENS 6TH XI - 29/02/2020 VS UEA 3 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 29/02/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 29/02/2020 HEADLINE: A draw and a hard-earned point against high-performing, second-in-table UEA LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: UEA Sportspark RESULT: 1-1 REPORT:This was a fast-paced game, played in freezing, wet conditions, against an almost unbeaten second-in-the table UEA. An energetic and youthful home team, with a 16-strong squad to keep their legs fresh, pressed hard into City’s defence area from the off. Within a few minutes they had found the net, catching Norwich off guard and unfortunately scoring with a powerful top D strike. City regrouped, found a better rhythm and steadied their nerves to hold off the home team despite repeated forays into City’s D – and with sweeper Emily Winter and goalkeeper Beth Wiskin frequently called into play to fend off dangerous attacking balls threatening to find the net. Despite, UEA’s pace and skill, City managed plenty of attacking play. Eventually, a well-positioned Julia Marchant attempted to find the net twice, managing to keep the ball away from the skilful UEA defenders. Then hard-working POM Susan Matthews picked up one of the rebounds and powered the ball into the net. A delighted City went into the break even at 1-1. City upped their game in the second half as they began to work out UEA’s set pieces and patterns of play – and who were their key players. This half saw more attacking play from City, and also some serious threats from UEA, with the home team thankfully just missing a tip-in from a short corner. City managed to hold their nerve and play a steady game, holding the ball high and then mopping up the frequent fast breaks by UEA, until the huge relief of the final whistle. A much-needed, bonus point from a clash with the high-performing UEA. Shout out to the excellent umpiring by the two UEA match officials who were impressive and fair.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 08/02/2020 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 7 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 08/02/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 08/02/2020 HEADLINE: A vital win in 6s fight to avoid relegation LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: 3-2 REPORT:This was a crucial match for City 6s who are battling to avoid relegation and they were feeling the pressure. With the opposition, Dragon’s 7s, sitting one place above in the league tables, City knew it was a battle they had to win. Almost all previous matches have seen City 6s draw with this team, but today a draw wasn’t an option. Dragons were strong from pushback, with a nervous City struggling to find their rhythm and losing possession of the ball more often than they should. Any carelessly placed or slow-paced passes were ruthlessly picked off by Dragons who were fast and well-drilled on the counter-attack putting City defence under pressure. City’s nerves steadied and they won a short-corner which was impressively converted with a strike by midfielder and player-of-the-match Susan Matthews. Unfortunately, Dragons increased the pressure and pulled two goals back in the last few minutes before half time. During the break Ali Wardale arrived, clipboard in hand, to coach City which helped steady team nerves and provide some welcome guidance from the sidelines. City and upped their game and began to have most of the possession. An equaliser soon came when Susan Matthews passed to central midfielder Caitlin Nicholson who made a strike which was deflected in near the post by Sarah Barron. The City midfielders picked up many Dragons clearance balls, keeping the play high in Dragon’s defensive area. With plenty of subs to keep energy high, City began to control the play as Dragons tired. Finally, City won a short corner which was again neatly converted with a strike by Susan Matthews. The whistle could hardly come soon enough. Three points in the bag will help as they go up a place in the league, but City are still far from safe from relegation.

Despite their enthusiasm for a win, City found the unbeaten opposition challenging from the start. The home team succumbed to a slick Dereham who were clearly used to operating as a well-organised unit. Player of the match with 13 votes was goalie Joanne di Corpo.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 18/01/2020 VS NORTH NORFOLK 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 18/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 18/01/2020 HEADLINE: Slick first half, but goals go in after break LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Cromer High School RESULT:0-3 REPORT:A slick and confident City played some of their best ever hockey in the first half against high-in-the-table North Norfolk 2s. Working far better as a unit and with improved skills and game play, thanks to some recent team coaching sessions from Fong, City kept the strong opposition at bay. They dominated play, sending the ball up the pitch in wave after wave of attacking play into North Norfolk’s D – moving the ball neatly around the home team and gaining back the ball thanks to some high-paced interceptions. Unfortunately, despite having most of the possession in the first half, a run of short corners and lots of circle penetration, hard-working City were unable to find the net and went into the break nil nil. Disappointed not to be on the score sheet, but delighted by how well they were playing as a unit, City headed back on the pitch determined to score some goals. Unfortunately, their shape, passing and game started to unravel from the off and North Norfolk took back control – bashing in three goals within the first few minutes of the second half. Disappointed, City steadied themselves and got back in the game, but were unable to pull any goals back. A three-nil loss but still a great game and some exciting potential moving forward.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 11/01/2020 VS PELICANS 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: First win of the season for Norwich 6s LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: 3-1 REPORT: It's been a tough season so far for the 6s with just two draws and no wins so far. This was a crucial fixture for the team, who went into the match sitting just above Pelicans 3s at the bottom of the table. Some excellent and supportive coaching in the days before from Fongy and much-appreciated pitch-side coaching from Thomas Ling really helped to boost morale this week. A well-prepared and upbeat team came out determined not to be beaten. City played an attacking game from the start – making repeated circle penetrations into Pelicans defensive D. But despite some good play, City conceded an-against-the-run-of-play goal early on after a ball hit a Pelicans foot but some play continued and the ball then bobbled up into the goal. Disheartened, but still determined, City fought back. Eventually a long pass from Josine Van den Berg to Emily ‘Winnie’ Winter was tapped in expertly by Sharon Phillips. Nerves steadied a little as we were back to an even score sheet. Then City took control of the game with another goal as a cross from Sofia Hancy was again netted by Sharon. Finally, City sealed a win in the second half when player of the match Caitlin Nicholson picked up the ball outside the D and took it in to make a strike which was caught by the keeper, but still managed to pop in. A hugely relieved City took three points and their much-needed first win of the season. A great win, but there will need to be a few more if City are to avoid relegation. However, it's crucial that they do or the club will find two of its women's teams sitting in the bottom league of the Norfolk division next season and no team at all in Division one.

However, despite some creative play in the D, unfortunately City were unable to find the net. In the second half Broadland pushed harder and converted a short corner and won a goal from open play. City managed to pull a goal back, but a near-miss attacking short corner at final whistle meant that unfortunately it was a 2 – 1 loss. City worked hard and there is plenty to build on moving forward.

High-quality umpiring and a good tempered atmosphere made this an enjoyable game as many home and away players remarked at the end of play. Despite numerous short corners at both ends, neither team looked dangerously close to scoring. Player of the match Sofia Hancy made some great runs and interceptions, neatly taking the ball out of contact and into space to make some great passes to her teammates. Captain Rose Byrne also displayed an impressive work rate, blocking Loddon's attempted balls through to their attackers and moving high up the pitch to ensure her team mates always had an available pass. A match without great incident but notable for city's press which thwarted Loddon's attempts to outlet from 16s.

However, strong defending from the visitors, who are enjoying a good run of results this season, meant that the home team just couldn’t find the net - despite winning plenty of short corners. Neat player link-ups by a youthful and speedy UEA meant they scored twice in the first half and then once in the second half. Despite the result, impressive sportswomanship and a positive attitude from UEA made the game enjoyable and the team a pleasure to host at Taverham.

The surface was slippery and Norwich 6s never quite found their feet physically or metaphorically in this struggle of a match. City’s defenders and POM goalie Beth Wiskin worked hard to keep Dereham at bay, but a Dereham goal eventually found the net. City were delighted to get an equaliser goal on the scoresheet, however, when a shot from Caitlin Nicholson was saved by the keeper, sent in again by Nihaal Hanif saved once again – then finally slipped in the net by Sofia Hancy. This led to a draw for much of the match, but a second Dereham goal meant City had to finally come away disappointed.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 05/10/2019 VS BRECKLAND 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: City had to play without a keeper LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Thetford RESULT: 4-1 REPORT: Forced to play without a keeper due to lack of availability across the club today, this match was a struggle for City 6s – who were pleased to keep the goal tally relatively respectable in the challenging circumstances. It wasn’t a happy game. Breckland were strong on the ball and a challenge for Norwich once in the D with no keeper. However, what Norwich felt were unprovoked, unsporting comments and behaviour from the hosts, made the whole match rather more unpleasant in tone than it needed to be. Captain and player of the match Rose Byrne stayed incredibly calm and the whole team followed her lead, guessing this may just be the way the hosts roll in their team vibe. City responded to the tough atmosphere by upping their work rate on the pitch rather than getting angry. City had plenty of penetration into the home team’s D, but couldn’t find the net as much as they needed. Three goals went in, during the first half. However, City let just one in during the second half and scored a goal back, thanks to the cool-headed skill of Josine Van Den Berg. The midfielder intercepted a clearance ball from Breckland and carefully slotted it into the net.

Unfortunately, however, this was not to be with North Norfolk 2s proving too strong. They continually pushed City back with long balls up the pitch and from the ensuing 16s City found it difficult to get past a strong North Norfolk press. City continually gave lots of possession away and the visitors were able to capitalise midway into the match. City improved in the second half, although another loose pass across their own D gave the opposition an easy goal. City fought back with Josine Van Den Berg taking the ball down the right and crossing into the D for Susan Matthews to slip the ball past the opposition keeper. However, the visitors' constant pressure was too much for City’s defence, as they put another past City late in the second half.

LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Lynnsport RESULT: 1-1 REPORT: An away match at Pelicans with just the bare 11 in 26-degree heat. It was never going to be easy. Pelicans had subs and youth on their side, but City 6s were utterly determined to dig deep and play together as a unit. As a result, the team played some of their best-ever hockey, passing neatly, having the best of the possession and keeping the ball away from their D despite the heat and their fatigue. At one point an injury meant that City went down to 10 players for a few minutes but they still battled on. Pelicans scored first, but City kept pushing with an impressive press in the second half that made it difficult for Pelicans to outlet on 16s. Eventually, the hard work paid off when Liz Hollis took the ball to the right baseline and hit a powerful ball across which was brilliantly picked up by player of the match Susan Matthews who then sent it towards goal to be deflected in by Julia Marchant. City came away with a draw, but in the challenging circumstances it felt like a win!
