The 7s took the lead with a slick finish before goals from strikers Simon Deakin and David Woodward gave the veterans the advantage at the break, after the interval the 7s gave it there best efforts but eventually fell down by two goals to one, also thanks to POTM Dave Brown.

MENS 6TH XI - 17/12/2016 VS NORWICH EXILES (H) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 17/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 17/12/2016 HEADLINE: A Christmas Cracker to end the year! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham High School RESULT: 5-4 Win! REPORT: In the final game before the new year, City 6s took on Nch Exiles in the usual Christmas friendly game, City were once again welcomed by Tom Ling, Christian Hughes and Ben Chapman as well as the returning Steve Fretwell. City started the game well and took the lead from Nigel Cushion, however Exiles scored twice to take the lead. But City were playing well and regained control when Simon Deakin lashed a short corner strike home. Ling was then managed to work his way to the P spot following a PC routine and finished low, and just before the break Ling played Deakin through with a goal ball and an even better finish from Simon. HT 4-2 After the break Exiles were more determined and managed to score another, City created numerous chances with Ben Chapman and CHristian Hughes causing problems down the right however the final pass and finish wasn't quite there. Exiles continued to press and managed to equaliser at 4-4. With the clock running down the gam got a bit frantic and a fired ball into the D by Ling seemed to be heading to Cushion only for Woody to come glancing in and touching the ball into the corner and wrong footing the Exiles keeper who didn't seem to happy! FT: 5-4 Win, great game and great win!

D (2-2) 10/12/2016 - M6 vs Norfolk Nomads 2 (A / F) YOUTH DOES HELP! |

MENS 6TH XI - 10/12/2016 VS NORFOLK NOMADS 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 10/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 10/12/2016 HEADLINE: Youth does help! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: UEA RESULT: 2-2 Draw REPORT: City this week were joined by both youngsters Christian Hughes and Tom Ling, the latter who gave the 6s the lead after a good pass from Deakin! A good solo run from Nomads youngest player however led to there equaliser. The game was very even and it took a Simon Deakin clinical finish to regain the lead, but once again Nomads equalised as it finished all square, probably in the end a fair result.

Coupland was outstanding in the middle of the field and brought the average age down in the team. Ady ran everywhere and Rob Coyle saved everything. A deserved win.

D (0-0) 19/11/2016 - M6 vs IES 6 (A / L) BATTLING DRAW |

MENS 6TH XI - 19/11/2016 VS IES 6 (A) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 19/11/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 19/11/2016 HEADLINE: Battling Draw LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Ipswich RESULT: Drew 0-0 REPORT: Another trip to Ipswich against their second team in the division. Having lost 7-1 at the same venue it was good to see a different set of opposition. Unfortunately, they included a senior player and national league umpire who would comfortably have played in our second team. A run past 6 players and reverse shot just wide of the crossbar in the first few minutes meant that all we did was try and prevent him from getting the ball and have many attempts at tackling him before too much damage was done. Thanks to some fine play by Playford in goal they weren't able to breech our defences. Meanwhile we created a few chances but Cushion and Woodward were unable to break the deadlock. A good result in the end.

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: Lost 1-2 REPORT: Two quick goals early in the first half punished the sleepy team. We fought back well with Deakin scoring again but despite more possession and more attacks the goals didn't come.

MENS 6TH XI - 29/10/2016 VS IES 5 (A) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 29/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 29/10/2016 HEADLINE: Out played LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE:Away RESULT:Lost 1-7 REPORT:Despite having three young players, in G, Fitz and Ben, City were outclassed and eventually let in a few goals at the end when trying to attack more than defend. With IES being top of the league only being 2-0 down at half time was quite good. The second half saw a few well made walk in goals for IES but also saw Woodie get a consolation goal which was only the third they had conceded all season. Good to welcome Honor senior back to hockey who played far better than his make-shift shorts looked and great to have a father and son duo on the pitch. Not a great game in terms of it being evenly matched but City tried hard and did have a few chances but were never likely to win.

MENS 6TH XI - 22/10/2016 VS NORTH NORFOLK 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 22/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 22/10/2016 HEADLINE: A game for the crowd LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE:Home RESULT:Draw 4-4 REPORT:In an exciting game that went from end to end City held on for a draw in a game hat could have gone either way. With the game played in great spirit, and only a few NN 2's in their team City had Cushion to thank for claiming 2 goals and making another for Woodies in the first half. NN hit back with one of their own to make it 3-2 at half time. Thanks to the youth of Ben Chapman and Fitz Honor city were able to play an open game but were caught at 3-3 before minutes later White scored from a short. Not to be outdone NN got the equalizer and the rest of the game was played with neither team deserving to lose. A great game to play in and to watch.

MENS 6TH XI - 15/10/2016 VS SUDBURY 4 (A) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 15/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 15/10/2016 HEADLINE: 88 players and still we ended up with 10 LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE:Sudbury RESULT:Lost 0-3 REPORT: 88 players and still we had to rely on Mrs Allsop to drive Lee to the game, on Broaders, Playford and Bailey to help get a team together. Unfortunatley, Coupland got the TYFNC when he broke down on the way. Fortunately, Sudbury lent us one of their 16 players so we at least had 11 for the game. 1-0 down at half time turned to 3-0 at the end of the game with Deakin getting POTM This report has been written twice but for some reason hasn't saved so apologies for its briefness. The clutch was whether we are a club or a bunch of individual teams with the 6th and 7th team not getting any players from the teams above despite themselves going out of their way to help the club.

MENS 6TH XI - 08/10/2016 VS NORFOLK NOMADS 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 08/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 08/10/2016 HEADLINE: At least we didn't lose LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Home RESULT: 2-2 Draw REPORT: City took the lead when Cushion prodded home while a bundle ensued following a cross by White. Unfortunately, Nomads drew level when the keeper was beaten by his own team's deflection (sorry Andy F) and then went behind when a simple long corner left a player unmarked and the keeper unseen when perhaps we should have done better. Good news was that City in the second half managed to string a great move together (perhaps their best ever?) including five great passes which finished with Woodie getting a pass on the edge of the D from Deakin and firing home. Somehow Andrews got POTM when the scribe thought it should go somewhere else for his two moments that resulted in the goals!

W (3-2) 24/09/2016 - M6 vs Norwich City 7 (H / L) SMASH AND GARB |
---|
MENS 6TH XI - 24/09/2016 VS NORWICH CITY 7 (H) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 24/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 24/09/2016 HEADLINE: Smash and garb LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: Won 3-2 REPORT: Well played the oldies as despite being outplayed in every department for the majority of the game the 6th team held on for their first win in a long time against the far better and far fitter 7th team. Thanks to some spectacular goals from Cushion, from a number of yards out, and Woodie with his best goal in a number of seasons when he powered a shot into the corner from the edge of the D, the oldies were 2-0 up before the 7th knew what had hit them. With at least 75% of the possession and far superior team play, it was only a matter of time before the 7th got their first goal to make the score more in keeping with the game. However, thanks to an incredible through ball by Taylor who found Cushion at the penalty spot, the 6th team ended the first half leading by 3 goals to 1. The oldies were lucky to be boosted by the young Andy Forsey and the even younger Fitz Hornor (who played himself into the POTM position) and both played a very impressive defensive performance to keep the younger, fitter team at bay for the majority of the second half. Bolstered by the introduction of Blake and Brown the 6th team defended throughout the second half with aplomb. Gerry Kelly also played his part and despite a green card for yet another miss-timed tackle he was the best runner up of the POTM and helped the 6th to hold onto their lead. Coyle again played well in goal and couldn't stop the 7th team from scoring their second goal but stopped them getting the scores even by the end of the game. A plucky, lucky win for the oldies who managed to hang on to win the game despite being outplayed throughout the game. Amusing incidents in the game included Dave Kidner being green carded for throwing Woodies stick over the fence after he "dropped" it during an attempted tackle, Cushion lobbing Hewett in goal but missing the target and White getting one in the privates from the stick of Holden. Good news was that Blake didn't get carded, the team played yet another new formation and Wright's knees managed to survive the game - oh and we got very very lucky!

---|
MENS 6TH XI - 17/09/2016 VS PELICANS 4 (A) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 17/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 17/09/2016 HEADLINE: Convincingly beaten LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Pelicans RESULT: Lost 1-5 REPORT: Rob Coyle had to be at his best to keep the team in the game for the first match of the league season. Up against it from the first minute Rob played the game of his life to keep Pelicans at bay for long periods of the first half. We went behind and then again before Cushion kept us in the game following an overlapping run involving Dave Tann who must have put his pacemaker on full as he ran further than he has done before prior to an accurate cross into the D that found Cushion who fired (well poked) home. Normal service resumed in the second half with the well oiled Pelicans creating chance after chance and Rob keeping them at bay. Copping received a green for his persistent fouling but Pelicans deservedly put a few more into the onion basket and ended up winning 5-1 and look the team to beat in the league so far this season. One hopes that we don't have to play against teams this good in the rest of the league.

---|
MENS 6TH XI - 10/09/2016 VS NORFOLK NOMADS 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 10/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 10/09/2016 HEADLINE: Beaten by Nomads! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE:Taverham RESULT:Lost 3-5 REPORT: Not the best second performance of the season as the old guard welcomed Nomads 2 (one of the few teams with nearly the same average age of the 6ths) but lost out to more clinical finishing from the oppo. Deakin was in full flow scoring 2 goals this week and Woodie put one of his many chances away but the team didn't quite perform to its best to end up the wrong side of the result. Still plenty to work on but a good game played in the correct spirit but a disappointing result.

MENS 6TH XI - 03/09/2016 VS DEREHAM 4 (A) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 03/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 03/09/2016 HEADLINE: Derek steals show LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Deraham RESULT:Lost 2-3 REPORT: Derek was the star of the show having recovered from a heart attack only 5 weeks previously he became man of the match for both teams as he displayed his defensive qualities for the Norwich team and then his versatility as right wing for Dereham. City's goals came from Woodward and Cushion as the oldest team in the league had their first run out of the season. Nice to see all the old faces back but amazing that they are all still playing year after year. A good pre-season friendly but a shame that the result went the wrong way.
