Royal Humane Society Award presented to Tom Franks
1 Nov 2025

With are delighted to now be able to share some fantastic news with the club, regarding our Club Secretary and a member of our Mens 3rd XI and Masters O35s teams, Tom Franks.

Tom was presented with the Royal Humane Society Award by the Chief Constable and the High Sheriff of Norfolk at their award ceremony earlier in October.

Below is a copy of the report and explains how he dealt with the unusual circumstance that he found himself in and the courage to deal with the situation - such a proud moment for Tom, his family and all who know him with regards to the recognition of what took place.

Mr Thomas Franks (MoP)

Shortly before midnight on 21 December 2024, Mr Franks was driving northbound along the A1 40 from the direction of Norwich Airport, approaching the overpass above the Northern Distributor Road. As he neared the bridge, he observed a distressed female standing on the wrong side of the safety barrier.

Recognising the urgency and gravity of the situation, Mr Franks immediately stopped his vehicle, dialled 999, placed the phone in his back pocket, and approached the individual. Without hesitation, he physically secured her to prevent her from jumping, while verbally relaying the situation to the emergency operator to ensure a swift response.

Despite the female's attempts to break free, Mr Franks maintained his grip and continued to offer reassurance and support. His actions were instrumental in preventing a potentially fatal incident.

Upon arrival, police officers found Mr Franks still holding the individual securely and engaging with her in a calm and compassionate manner. The fire service subsequently attended and safely moved the female to the correct side of the bridge using a tethered harness.
