REPORT:
City arrived at Bury with a bare 11 players on a warm muggy Sunday morning to face a large Bury squad. The warm up proved to be warm work and it was clear the girls would have a tiring match. From the start it soon became apparent that City would have a lot of defending to do and would be reliant on counter attacks. What transpired was a terrific team performance with all players defending as if their lives depended on it. Lucy Walton and Poppy Scott made lots of timely tackles at the back with Jess Westbury in goal blocking most attempts that eluded Lucy and Poppy. Annabelle Royal, Evie Brockington and Ellie Tomkinson provided a solid screen with Evie distributing the ball intelligently and Annabelle making some surging runs down the right. Millie Power and Obie Hansell worked tirelessly in midfield breaking up attacks and then getting forward to support the counter attacks. At the front Grace Hanworth-knights caused the Bury defence all sorts of problems with her dribbling skills whilst Mirabelle Harden and Olivia Kazimierczak provided great support on the wings.

City took the lead after twenty five minutes when Grace Hanworth-Knights crashed home a short corner. Just after the half time break City extended their lead when a free hit just outside the circle went through Millie Power and Obie Hansell before falling to Grace whose reverse stick shot beat the keeper. This looked to have given City some breathing space, but Bury hit back straight from the restart to reduce the arrears. As the conditions started to take its toll City came under more pressure and it looked as if Bury had equalised before Poppy appeared to clear the ball off the line. City clinched the match two minutes from time when Grace smashed home another shirt corner.

Poppy was voted player of the match just ahead of Grace and Lucy, but all players deserve to be congratulated on a terrific team performance.
