WOMENS 1ST XI - 28/09/2019 VS EAST LONDON 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: A TOUGH WEEK FOR CITY 1S LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: Lee Valley RESULT: 1-5 REPORT: After a sleepy bus journey we arrived at Lee Valley raring to go with a brilliant team talk from Pies and lively warm up! The first half began and we struggled to keep possession of the ball meaning we did not manage to attack and create chances for ourselves, although we kept fighting this led to a goal for East London. Mikayla was making some great saves, and the back line were fighting hard, 1 nill at half time. We started the second half very well passing the ball lovely across the middle and back despite East London scoring a second goal from a short corner. After some excellent passing up the pitch we gained a short corner, Olivia Williams scored with a beautifully timed stroke to the far corner. We fought hard but couldn't quite finish any more balls, East London then scored an open play goal, a flick and another short corner in quick succession with the final score being 5-1, Ellie Brine was strong and created consistent options through out the match. Alice Gill man of the match.

WOMENS 2ND XI - 28/09/2019 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: Jarvis Brace Secures 3 Points LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: 2-0 Win REPORT: Dragons started the game off with first push back as Norwich pushed forward fast after the ball. Dragons pushed forward with some good one-two passing but Norwich were straight in with strong tackles and got the ball back and under control. The Norwich defence worked well together with Sally, Longy and Leigh-Ann having full control passing the ball around the back creating lots of movement and space and Frankie making some lovely passes up the line to fast runners Rosie and Rosie! Half time: Keeping possession, Norwich worked their way forward with great runs through midfield from Rachael, Ellie and Kate who held her own in centre mid. This continued with Milly making strong runs with the ball into the D but the Dragons keeper was having a great game, making it tricky for Norwich to get the first of the game. But Norwich didn’t give up and had a fast break away from defence, working the ball forward to Emma who ran into the right side of the Dee. The keeper sprinted out adding more pressure but she kept her cool and passed the ball to Hannah who ran from the half way to top Dee to strike into an open goal. Norwich kept there high spirits and put lots of pressure on the dragons keeper with lots of near misses past both goal posts, winning several short corners, but still couldn’t get a second goal in. Along came another short corner and Norwich grouped together at the top of the Dee to plan their next move. Dragons were awaiting the yellows set up. Rosie dragged fast to the top Emma to top the ball with Leigh-Ann passing the ball straight left to Hannah. One touch and a hard lifted push across the goal into the bottom right hand corner. Making the final score 2-0 Hannah Jarvis 2 goals Hannah Jarvis player of the match

WOMENS 3RD XI - 28/09/2019 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 4 (A) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: Tough away fixture LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Harleston (away) RESULT: 0-2 (loss) REPORT: On a blustery but bright Saturday morning, City 3s travelled to Diss to take on Harleston Magpies 4's. As expected, it was a hard and fast game. End to end play saw an exciting match for spectators but a frustrating one for the visiting team. Despite having a number of opportunities on goal, City failed to score, unlike the hosts who managed to get the only goal of the first half. City pulled up their socks and raised their game in the second half, playing hard and fast again, but so did Magpies. Again, there were plenty of shots and a few short corners but the goals remained elusive for the City 3s. Magpies cemented the win in the last minutes of the game with a strong run and hard hit at goal that was unstoppable. Despite the scoreline, City played well and have a lot of positives to take forward into the new season.

WOMENS 6TH XI - 28/09/2019 VS NORTH NORFOLK 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: A LOT TO LEARN FOR CITY 6s LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TAVERHAM RESULT: 3-1 LOSS REPORT: CITY 6s had high hopes for their second league match of the season following a great team effort last week. Unfortunately, however, this was not to be with North Norfolk 2s proving too strong. They continually pushed City back with long balls up the pitch and from the ensuing 16s City found it difficult to get past a strong North Norfolk press. City continually gave lots of possession away and the visitors were able to capitalise midway into the match. City improved in the second half, although another loose pass across their own D gave the opposition an easy goal. City fought back with Josine Van Den Berg taking the ball down the right and crossing into the D for Susan Matthews to slip the ball past the opposition keeper. However, the visitors' constant pressure was too much for City’s defence, as they put another past City late in the second half.

L (0-1) 28/09/2019 - W7 vs Watton 3 (H / L) A FRUSTRATING LOSS |

WOMENS 7TH XI - 28/09/2019 VS WATTON 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 7th XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 7th XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: A Frustrating Loss LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 3 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 1-0 (L) REPORT: After last weeks excellent win over Pelicans, City 7's suffered a frustrating loss to Watton. City had the better of the opening exchanges but then a youthful Watton team found their feet and went ahead after some persistent play in and around the 'D'. After the break City upped the intensity and dominated possession but despite numerous chances and several close calls, could not get the equaliser. The 7's continue their tradition of bringing new players through into playing regularly and this match, although frustrating, was more good experience for several new members. Alex Woods was POTM.

WOMENS DEVELOPMENT XI - 28/09/2019 VS NORWICH DRAGONS A (A) TEAM: Womens Development XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Womens Development XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: A game of two halves LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Dragons Den RESULT: Dragons A Development Girls 5 Norwich City Development Girls 2 REPORT: Dragons started brightly and applied pressure on City with some quick attacks, however, City then started to find their feet and launch attacks of their own. Ten minutes into the first quarter City took the lead when a pass from player of the match Lucy Walton found Evie Hood unmarked at the top right of the circle and her hard push found it's mark. Early in the second quarter City increased their lead Emily Hicks winning the ball outside the circle beating the last defender and smashing the ball home. City had further opportunites to increase their lead whilst the defence held firm. The third quarter proved to be City's undoing with Dragons catching City napping almost straight from the restart to pull one back. This lifted Dragons who then started to exert pressure whilst the City defence which had resisted in the first half lost its composure and discipline. Dragons added a further three goals during the quarter, before adding a fifth in the final quarter to record a convincing win. City should not be downhearted as they were playing a team of older girls.

MENS 1ST XI - 28/09/2019 VS EAST LONDON 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: Solid City Performance Seals 3 points LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: On the back of a well earned draw against a strong Chelmsford side and strong performance in a mid-week friendly played under the lights at Taverham. City's 1s were looking to make gain their first win of this seasons campaign. Facing an East London side which has been bolstered following their loss to Norwich in the Plum preseason tournament. East London started the first half with some strong pressure, limiting outlet options in midfield. It took some resolute play to ensure that their early efforts did not lead to a goal for the away team. Despite some early struggles, City won a penalty corner on their first effort in the East London Defensive circle and Cameron Cooke blazed home a dragflick into the bottom corner. This goal seemed to wobble a physical and competitive East London side and only a few minutes later Cameron Cooke was on hand to tap home a neat finish past the keeper at the near post. 2-0 city at the break. The second half saw a change in momentum with city finding more and more space, coming close on many occasions. Following a mistake from the City midfield an East London attacker managed to break and finished smartly passed Alastair Cooke, who had until this point remained unbeatable in the city goal. It appeared that East London may mount a comeback however following well won Penalty corner, Thomas Cooke slid a shot in goal from a tight angle much to the disappointment of East London. The away did score in the last minute of the game but it was too little, too late for them as Norwich City took their first win 3-2

D (3-3) 28/09/2019 - M2 vs Kettering 1 (A / L) COMEBACK KINGS! |

MENS 2ND XI - 28/09/2019 VS KETTERING 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: Comeback kings! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Wellingborough RESULT: 3-3 Draw REPORT: City arrived after the long journey confident of a win to get the season fully up and running. City started brightly with some good spells of possession and created a few half-chances. However this was ended by a neat Kettering after the ball was lost in midfield. Fairly soon after Kettering put away a short corner to go in to half time with a 2-0 lead that didn’t fairly reflect the city efforts. At half time we quickly identified what needed to be rectified and how we saw the second half panning out. This briefly went out the window when Kettering scored another short corner. This finally proved to be the kickstart city needed and we started to play some great hockey, with Fox, ling and Anthony finding more space out wide, with Anthony opening up those long legs and burning his man a few times. A short corner led to the first goal-the ball broke to Broadway who fired in. Following some robust challenges on the forwards another corner was eventually awarded. Pallister collected a wide injection and smashed it bottom bins. Game on. City kept on pushing until a few minutes from time the ball span kindly to silvester to tap home. There was still time for Millet to keep out a final short corner. City will feel that with another 5 minutes or the rub of the green from some questionable umpiring decisions, they could have come away with the win.

W (3-2) 28/09/2019 - M3 vs Norwich Dragons 2 (H / L) A WIN! |

MENS 3RD XI - 28/09/2019 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: A win! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE:TRF RESULT: City 3 - 2 Dragons REPORT: This was a very competitive and pretty even game. City started pretty well but in the early stages they seemed to run out of ideas once the ball got near the atracking D. Fortunately this somewhat frustrating period was short lived and once we did settle into some rhythm we looked good with man of the match Ben Chapman the key to our innovation. We scored when debutant Robert McCall tapped in at the far post following an excellent move from right to left and back again tormented the visitors defense Our lead was short lived when James Cross was first to react to a lose ball and rifled it into the roof of the net. Undeterred City then had their best passage of play in the first half with Rio Iaccarino, Ben Chapman and Boycie regularly linking well. A Boycie corner strike restored our lead. 2-1 at half time. The second half was very similar with City’s half backs Ed Taylor and Dan Jeffers becoming much more involved. Yes City’s defense had to make a number of tackles and last ditched interceptions but in the main they were well organised and disciplined. With Chappers creating mayhem for City on the attacking half it was against the run of play when a neat penalty corner routine levelled the score. City responded in fine style when Boycie scored his second to make it 3-2. Moments later the same player got a congratulatory green card from the unpire (cheers Frosty) which led to a tactical master stroke with Rees dropping back to defence and launching aerials to pen Dtagons back in their own half. Great finger tip save by Ben to close out the victory....did I mention....we won! A good hard fought game played with the right amount of competitive spirit. If Chappers and Rio can pull a “sickie” from school each week I reckon we can find a nice hockey home for them. Many thanks to the whole team and to Alexfir climbing out of his sick bed to support

MENS 4TH XI - 28/09/2019 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (A) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: A Tough Day at the Office for City LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: Dragons Den RESULT: 1-7 REPORT: City 4s experienced a tough day at the office away to Dragons 3s, ending up on the wrong side of a somewhat harsh scoreline. City started well and took the lead early on with Adie Land poaching a goal in broken play. However, the lead did not last long and, when City switched off briefly, they were punished by some clinical finishing from Dragons. Unfortunately this was the pattern for the rest of the half and, despite the game being relatively even and having much of the play, City went in 3-1 down. City pushed forward in the second half, clearly looking to get back in the game. Sadly, this adventurous play backfired, leaving Dragons with more space to counterattack at pace, particularly as City tired. Add to this some bits of luck and some good finishing, and Dragons were to score four more times in the second half. City had their own chances but somehow could not scramble the ball home. The game finished 7-1, which was really not reflective of the balance between the sides. It was a harsh lesson, but hockey is sometimes like this; the most important thing for City is to bounce back with a good performance next week. I am pleased to say that this improvement was already evident in the post-match tea, where City, working as a team, put away three large pizzas without breaking a sweat and demonstrated a marked superiority over Dragons in this area of the match.

Lost our way in the second half when Watton came back strongly but we recovered towards the end of the second half and were unlucky not to steal a winner. Overall though a good performance and an enjoyable game.

W (4-0) 28/09/2019 - MD vs Norwich Dragons B (A / L) PRESSURE AND THE PASSING GAME WIN FOR CITY |
---|
MENS DEVELOPMENT XI - 28/09/2019 VS NORWICH DRAGONS B (A) TEAM: Mens Development XI DATE: 28/09/2019 FIXTURE: Mens Development XI VS 28/09/2019 HEADLINE: Pressure and the passing game win for City LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Dragons RESULT: Win 4-0 REPORT: Firstly many thanks to Josie for playing for Dragons today avoiding postponement at the eleventh hour, anyway... Lots of positives from today’s game:- The passing game - For those not able to make training it is probably worth recognising that the width and depth in attack that we strived for created the space for the midfield to hold the ball until a good pass was on – nice work when you can get it Mattie and Harry, threading considerate balls through to our attack. Others for whom this position is newer also played well with clean square passes showing good awareness to avoid the obvious trap of trying to pass through a solid stick, and which, coupled with their high workrate for the team when the ball was lost was commendable, Ellis and Freddy. In the front line we saw how to manufacture shortcorners - particularly by Louis - and from Charlie a huge workrate and tasty assists in tight spaces, really valuable too. Also worth mentioning the posting up from the ever-hungry-for-work Ed, turning Dragons defence inside out before releasing passes to stick in the “3 point zone”, absolutely fabulous. In fact I don’t think we’ve played more selfless, assured hockey up front this season. Pressure - In the midfield against a clearly more physical and very probably older team (even excluding their man at the back!) required stronger, flat stick tackles. The alternative is to shadow and jab to keep their heads down and, unable to make a pass, they hold the game up allowing us to either double team them or get the rest of our defence into better positions. However, our incessant workrate and pressure led to numerous interceptions overturning their attack making it our attack, particular well dones to Lucas and Will M, good throughout. Discipline in defence – the “not being drawn into a midfield role” improved compared to our previous outing against Watton, well done for keeping organised at the back with a watchful eye for their classic long ball through, which they sent more in hope than expectation but nevertheless we kept honest and eliminated the threat from their last man. Will J did really well on the few occasions that he was tested and I suspect when we play this new team again it will be sterner yet but Sam K and Harrison proved superb with back to back tackles from Harrison and assured distribution from Sam meaning we had energy left to burn, experience illuminating where to point the lit fuse. So thanks be given - Huge thanks to all the helpers who made today such a joy: Tom, Helen, Peter, Jim, David, Rob and Joanna – actually I think I owe one of you for the recuperative coffee that allowed me to channel my inner Geoffrey Cox from the sideline, unlike our Westminster friends we seem to have a rather more cohesive team spirit about us, which is nice…
