LADIES 1ST XI - 25/02/2017 VS WAPPING 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 25/02/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 25/02/2017 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre RESULT: 0-2 L REPORT: With only a handful of matches before the end of the season Norwich bundled into a mini bus and headed to London to play Wapping Womens 1s. Despite some early possession from Norwich, Wapping were quick to score from a strike that deflected off the right hand post player bounced off a Norwich City player and ended up at the back of the goal. Norwich continued to defend however failed to convert the few chances they had, meaning Wapping went into the second half ahead. The second half was again very defensive and with limited play and chances to score, Norwich struggled to get back into the game. Wapping, who built some great attacking play were quick to score a second goal. Norwich didn’t give up, and fought strong until the end gaining more possession in the last ten minutes of the game however this was little too late and the final whistle went with no goals scored by the Norwich side.

W (8-0) 25/02/2017 - W3 vs Carrow 1 (A / L) DOUBLE ILLING HAT TRICK (MUM & DAUGHTER) DOMINATES 8 GOAL WINNER |

LADIES 3RD XI - 25/02/2017 VS CARROW 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 25/02/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 25/02/2017 HEADLINE: Double Illing Hat trick (mum & daughter) dominates 8 goal winner REPORT: LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Langley School RESULT: 0-8 REPORT: City travelled to a blustery Langley School with a full squad of 15 ready for a tough game. Carrow had proven to be a difficult side to beat in the past and City were looking to secure the win. City pushed into Carrow's half from the off with opportunities in the circle not quite paying off. Carrow defended well and succeeded in driving the ball hard for a long ball through to a forward to be rewarded with an early penalty corner opportunity. This became a series of several penalty corners each defended well with a shot being saved by City keeper Summer Haylock and cleared wide by defender Kim Lusher. City remained calm and were successful in defending this flurry into their circle without conceding a goal. Waking up to the game, City pushed back to counter hard. Centre Sabina Illing controlled the play and worked well with the backs to move the ball back and around to drive the side line. Great interplay between Emily Greenway and Olivia Broadway created a penalty corner opportunity for City. Sabina Illing stepped up. a smooth injection from Emily Greenway to Illing, a straight strike, finding the backboard on the bottom right. 0-1 Carrow tried to retain possession at the re-start but were harried down by Rachel Gregory who popped the ball free to Hannah Bush on the right wing. Again good movement of the ball to retain possession created opportunities with passes in the circle being missed by only the slightest of touches in the circle, which could have given more goals. City's attack was rewarded with another penalty corner. This time Caroline Illing stepped up. With another smooth injection from Emily Greenway, to Illing, a slip right to Jenny Stanghan, back to Illing for a low strong sweep into the bottom right. 0-2 Carrow were again pressed on the re-start. Credit to them as they pushed hard into the City's half giving City's keeper Summer Haylock cause to react. However the defensive team of Megan Conway and Jenny Brine were confident in their clearance of the danger and movement of the ball out of the 23 to initiate further waves of City attack. The half finished 0-2. City knew they had to step up and play their own game an be first to the ball. Carrow were keen for points and could see that the 2-goal buffer at half time would not be enough for City to sit back. City wanted more. Every member of the team stepped up their game. Great hassling in the centre from Grace Kidner won the ball, out right to Phoebe York who used her skill and speed to drive the line. Looking up as she drove the by-line in the circle York found Caroline Illing stepped ahead of her defender on the p-spot. A perfectly weighted ball in was met with a sweep from Illing, finding the corner of the back board. 0-3 City were now unstoppable. Wave after wave of attack came to be rewarded with another City penalty corner. Sabina Illing stepped up, straight strike another goal. 0-4 From the re-start Carrow were harassed by City forwards and inners. Olivia Broadway chasing the ball down supported by Grace Kidner and a drive into the circle gave a reward of a further penalty corner. This time Caroline Illing stepped up. Again a smooth injection from Emily Greenway to Illing. Illing slipped the ball right to Jenny Stanghan to receive it back behind the defender running 1. A low sweep again finding the corner of the back board. City's routines were working today! 0-5 and a first league hat trick to Caroline Illing. City kept the pressure on from the re-start. Carrow made a play of a long ball into the city half. Calm defending marshalled by Gemma Sargent dampened the attack and the ball was re-started with a long switch through Kim Lusher to Kirsten Aitken on the right. The attack built from the right with Phoebe York again dominating in her line running, passing the ball into space for Hannah Bush to run on to and drive into the circle. The pressure was rewarded with yet another penalty corner. This time Sabina Illing stepped up. Greenway injection to Illing, another straight strike low and powerful. 0-6 another first league hat trick. City were riding high. Sabina Illing in the centre harassed the Carrow attack stealing the ball with a sneaky shave tackle, she turned and drove into the Carrow half. Showing strength, Illing pressed forward with her run and slipped the ball to her left just inside the circle, dropping low she executed a reverse stick shot into the top right of the goal net. 0-7. With only minutes to play, Carrow continued to try for a goal. A pressured attack down their left was rewarded with a penalty corner. The shot came which was safely saved by City keeper Summer Haylock. The ball fell to City's defender Kim Lusher who cleared the ball long and wide to find Caroline Illing running in from the half way line to receive it on the turn. Driving the right the lone defender behind Illing tried vainly to slow the counter attack, but Illing chucked the ball into space down the right wing. Grace Kidner was running into the space and received the ball neatly to drive into the circle. Looking up she had Sabina Illing running into the top of the circle and Emily Greenway running the far post both undefended. Making a great decision Kidner released the ball to Greenway as the keeper had squared up to Illing. Greenway received the ball neatly and slotted home the ball behind the keeper to complete the 0-8 win. A fabulous team goal to finish a fabulous team game. POTM was awarded to Sabina Illing

W (5-2) 25/02/2017 - W4 vs Loddon 1 (H / L) LADIES 4TH XI SECURE ANOTHER GREAT WIN! |

LADIES 4TH XI - 25/02/2017 VS LODDON 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 4th XI DATE: 25/02/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 4th XI VS 25/02/2017 HEADLINE: Womens 4th XI secure another great win! LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE:TRF RESULT:5-2 (win) REPORT: A fantastic team effort from the womens 4’s today. Pressure was applied from the off and the team took advantage of running leads and playing the ball into space. The first goal came from some great attacking play by Rachael and Sophia. Running the ball down the wing, Rachael crossed to Sophia who kept composed and hit a great reverse shot into the back of the net. Not long after the second goal came with a cross into the D from Sophia which allowed Holly to deflect it into the goal. Rachael and Sophia proved a superb attacking team as they ensured City’s 3rd goal. Rachael spotted Sophia in space at the top of the D. Composed once again, Sophia fired the ball home. 3-0 to the 4’s at half time! At the start of the 2nd half Loddon womens applied some pressure of their own. True to form, their counter attack saw them steal a goal. An unfortunate goal as City’s defence had worked tirelessly throughout the first half to keep the team on the attacking foot. With Ellyn commanding from the centre, City went on the hunt for goals once more. Great wide play saw Cheryl threading balls through to the inners and Sue holding off any attempts from the oppositions mids. A short corner gave the 4’s their 4th goal. The reliable Emily Spencer stepped up to smash the ball home. A powerful and accurate shot as always. Emotions ran high as the game pushed on. Both teams were hungry for more goals as the tackles came in hard and fast! Loddon managed to find a second goal despite city's defence putting up a great fight in the D and unlucky for Edie who had been superb all game. City were not disheartened and went on the attack once more. Fantastic play into space saw the ball threaded through to Rachael, who expertly chipped the ball over the goalies head and into the roof of the goal! An enjoyable game for the 4’s that sees them secure their position mid table. Some lessons learnt too; a defensive mindset must be employed when the ball is lost. However, lots of positives to take forward into next weeks game at the Dragons den. Match Report kindly provided by well deserved POTM, Holly Robinson.

D (1-1) 25/02/2017 - W5 vs Evergreens 2 (H / L) FIGHTING TILL THE END! |
---|
LADIES 5TH XI - 25/02/2017 VS EVERGREENS 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 25/02/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 25/02/2017 HEADLINE: Fighting till the end! LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 1-1 REPORT:Firstly, welcome back to Karen. This was her first match in 12 week after a nasty finger injury but as expected she played as though she hadn't even been away! Also, thank you to Fran and Jane from the 6s who both worked tirelessly and fitted right in. With a few players in new positions this week it took City a while to settle into the game and find their feet. During the first half City had the majority of the possession and were unlucky not to convert one of their many short corners. Credit goes to the Evergreens keeper who made numerous saves which kept her team in the game. Disappointingly for City there was no score at half time. After the break City frustrated the opposition and put a lot of pressure on one of their key players by marking her out of the game. Everything seemed to be going in City’s favour until a break from Evergreens down the right resulted in their pass across D being converted. 1 – 0 to Evergreens. City continued to pile on the pressure for the remaining 20 minutes but nothing seemed to be working. Evergreens were happy to see the time tick by and with one minute remaining it seemed like it might all be over. However, with the last play in normal time City managed to win a short corner – this was their chance! The pressure was immense and all the City players were surrounding the D. The strike at the keeper was again saved and a defender cleared the ball. It looked like it was all over – there were even handshakes between players! – but the clearance was raised and another short corner was awarded. Again City lined up. Kitty injected, Ali received the ball and with a straight strike from the top of the D she put it right through the keeper’s legs! City celebrated! Maybe slightly too much for a 1-1 draw … A good but very stressful game!

W (3-1) 25/02/2017 - W6 vs Watton 3 (H / L) A WIN - BUT PROBABLY NOT OUR FINEST 70 MINUTES. |
---|
LADIES 6TH XI - 25/02/2017 VS WATTON 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 25/02/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 25/02/2017 HEADLINE: A win - but probably not our finest 70 minutes. LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 3-1 REPORT: Struggling Watton played a messy game from the off – and unfortunately Norwich 6s struggled to maintain their customary disciplined, neat passing game. The Watton captain could frequently be heard shouting at her team: ‘run, don’t walk girls’ to no avail and the pace was mostly slower than it should be. However, City made plenty of breaks, with Lucy McNarry and player of the match Sharon Phillips powering the ball up the pitch giving the home team the best of the play. Eventually, the frequent chances paid off when Sharon deflected in a cross from the right. More scrappy play followed, with Norwich again struggling to keep their game neat and slick. Then eventually, the superior skills of City paid off, with captain Julia Marchant impressively netting two crosses in from the right. City went into the break three nil up. A half-time talk from pitch-side coach Dave Skinner encouraged City to stay strong and play their own game, but it was tough to execute and play clustered in the centre of the pitch. Ball after ball was blasted randomly from Watton’s 16s away over the home team’s back line by a powerful-hitting but off-target Watton defender. It was a puzzling game, with Watton bunched in the centre of the pitch and in their defensive D. However, City still has their work cut out at times to contain a young, stand-out Watton playmaker who attacked with pace and skill and sent in effective crosses - one of which unfortunately found the net. The second half probably wasn’t City’s finest moment, but there were still some great passing moves and tackles, plus some excellent saves from debut goalie Grace Thrower.

D (1-1) 25/02/2017 - LD vs Harleston Magpies (A / L) TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH FRUSTRATION |
---|
LADIES DEVELOPMENT XI - 25/02/2017 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES (A) TEAM: Womens Development XI DATE: 25/02/2017 FIXTURE: Womens Development XI VS 25/02/2017 HEADLINE: Top of the Table Clash Frustration LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Harleston RESULT: 1 : 1 REPORT: Frustration - “the feeling of being annoyed as a result of being unable to achieve something” Assembling early on a Saturday morning in Suffolk, the team faced another top of the table clash against Magpies. Fielding a strong team, hopes were high that Norwich could continue their long running winning streak meaning the race for the title would then be in their own hands. Unfortunately, in what seems to have become an unwelcome regular feature, Norwich were sluggish from the off. Bunching together, fluidity was absent with wide players being sucked into an increasingly congested midfield. Consequently, chances were few and far between for either side, although the solid defence of Lottie; Sabina; and Lucy never looking seriously threatened. As the quarter progressed however, Norwich became increasingly dominant. The left flank was beginning to generate some opportunities with excellent play from both Frances Underhill and Frances Bryne beginning to look promising, as did the solitary attack on the right created by Maddie and Lucy Wimhurst. Ultimately, however, the quarter ended with not a single shot on either goal. In an effort to maximize the opportunities for all players, Norwich made four substitutions for the second quarter. Unfortunately, with hindsight, this unsettled the team and any momentum engendered by the end of the first quarter was lost. Whilst the unchanged defence remained strong, it took time for the new players to find their feet in the game but again, Norwich slowly began to build momentum. Kate and Matilda remained resolute in midfield and strong pushes into the final third from Abi; Niamh and Evie resulted in two, ultimately unconverted penalty corners. Other attacks were neutralized by the strong Magpies lady player who marshalled their back four and the half ended with a near miss at the far post for Magpies, one of their few forays close to the posts. A very even half and the match hung in the balance. Norwich began the second half strongly despite an enforced changed that saw Lottie swapping positions with Kate meaning she was playing in an unfamiliar midfield role. Her strong strikes helped Frances Underhill, and then Effie, to generate some strong left wing attacks with Abi and Frances Bryne looking threatening at the top of the D. Niamh also created chances on the right and this led to a penalty corner which Matilda injected strongly allowing Frances Bryne to release a pile driver shot from the top of the D into the bottom left corner. Nothing less than Norwich deserved and relief all round. However, Magpies were never out of the game and always looked threatening, beginning to build pressure for the remainder of the quarter as Norwich defended deep in their final third. Norwich found it increasingly difficult to break out of their half but a sharp save by Daisy to her left meant the quarter ended with Norwich maintaining their lead. In the final quarter the team were encouraged to pressure Magpies further up the pitch. This relieved the defensive pressure and further chances were created by both flanks and some good runs by Matilda. Norwich retained the majority of the possession in the Magpies half but the chances were never clear cut and it looked like the quarter would remain goalless until, in the final minute, a long pass from defence caught Norwich out. Daisy did well to repel the initial approach and shots but eventually the attacker moved around her and slotted home. Hugely disappointing and frustrating. Final result 1:1. Post-match, although the team felt like they had lost, a reality check is needed. With five games to go, only 70% of the season has been played. The chance of clinching the title remains, particularly with the improving Dragons and Dereham teams still likely to play a crucial part. Chins up girls: be frustrated and disappointed but ultimately, not distracted. We are all still learning; everything is still to play for; and you all have a role to fulfil. Next time I will also remember to wear my lucky socks!

W (2-1) 26/02/2017 - M1 vs Oxford (H / EH MT5) CITY THROUGH TO EH SEMIS VIA STROKES AGAIN! |
---|
MENS 1ST XI - 26/02/2017 VS OXFORD (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 26/02/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 26/02/2017 HEADLINE: City through to EH semis via strokes again! LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION B VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-1, 5-4 after penalty strokes REPORT: With weary bodies and mudled minds Norwich City stepped on to the hallowed grounds of Taverham High School. Not so fresh from a 2-2 draw against the ever youthful Cambridge University 2’s we were once again facing a young team full of running and “trendy” haircuts. Our opponents Oxford were hard to work out with ex-NC player Ethan Marchant giving little away. Immediately after the starting whistle it was clear that a night of frivolities had taken its toll on the home team. A few wayward passes and some questionable ball retention forced penalty corner defence on NC early on. But, thanks to some tremendous keeping from Alastair “Russ” Cooke the score remained nil – nil. With some clever managerial work, kinks in the squad were ironed out, with Tom Hindle taking an early rest around 6 ½ minutes in. NC began to work themselves into the game, at some points stringing together at least 3 passes and fashioned out a few half chances but none produced goals, much to the frustration of the squad. With credit to Oxford they continued to put a serious shift in and their work rate and energy eventually gave them a goal. A tidy little reverse finish which most felt A. Cooke could have done better with. Heads did not drop. The crowd upped the volume and we pushed back, looking to respond as soon as possible. D. CHEESEman soon found himself with a chance on goal but some lucky tackles kept him at bay. It was clear though the NC had a point to prove and barely 2 minutes after conceding The Big Cheese won a penalty flick with some lovely skills and clever complaining to the umpire. The team grouped on the halfway line and David “Blessed By God” Skinner stepped up to the mark. Despite a questionable story about the oppo’s keeper having a couple of caps for England, Skinner easily slotted the ball and suddenly it was anyone’s game (PRAISE THE LORD!) The first half ended with little action from either team. A couple of saves, a couple of shots, Thomas Cooke getting a hurty neck. The halftime team talk from beloved captain Nicholas “NICHOLAS!!!” Jones was firm but fair and some hard truths were shared. We were playing poorly, we knew it. We needed to do something to fix it. We returned to the pitch with new enthusiasm and focus and the second half began. Almost immediately we lost the enthusiasm and focus and the game became a constant cycle of speedy Oxford attacks through their handy midfield; and long speculative passes from our resident big gun T. Cooke. A few half chances were made with Jezza Elliot almost scoring with an audacious reverse stick shot, but no goals were scored. We were better in the second half with Harry “Short Shorts” Gill, Ben “sorry I was late, the pigs needed feeding” Plumb and Luke “Heartthrob” Corden showing how a night in improves your game. As it neared the end of normal time both teams had chances for penalty corners, special mention to T. Cooke’s uncharacteristically budget strike, but neither side scored and the game ended. Flicks. We barely deserved the draw but we approached the shootout with the confidence of team who had nothing to lose (except a place in the semis obviously). The confidence was warranted as all of NC’s flick takers (Skinner, Elliot, Preston, Wardale, Jones) produced smart shots. Special mention must go to the thunderbolt hard push, and accompanying trademark hair flick, produced by Louis “Francis” Preston which sent shock waves around the grounds. In the end though, the game was decided by a woeful flick from an Oxford man who had spent the 70mins tearing up the NC back four, who barely managed to trickle it past the post. The Norwich City smash and grab was complete, time for showers and beers. Who will they draw in the next round, it remains to be seen but whoever they are they better get ready for some mediocre hockey and even worse chat.

City then took the lead through one of their own short corners when the initial shot rebounded to the top of the D, the ball was played back into Harry Gill to calmly apply the finish. Cambs Uni found the equaliser for 2-2 from a straight dragflick to the bottom left corner. With all the goals in the first half this was how the match finished in an intense affair.

Pre match photos were taken by many of the players, but most notably by Richard Silvester who was loving the occasion taking snaps at every opportunity. The facilities were excellent. The game began and City found themselves being put under a lot of pressure for the first 10 minutes. The well drilled opposition caught City off guard twice during this period, leading to City finding themselves 2-0 down early on in the game. However, as the half went on City found their feet and starting playing the hockey they know they can. This late spell of good play led to a short corner for City, which unfortunately wasn't converted. Half time 2-0 Wapping. City didn't have the best start to the second half either, conceding two early goals . With Jim Pallister off injured City were limited to one sub. This showed, as the fresh legs of the Wapping players led to them breezing past the tired City players. The game finished 6-0. City will have to keep their heads up as the relegation battle isn't over yet, good results in the coming weeks could be the turning point in their season. They were outplayed by a very good side in Wapping 2's and will have to forget about this fixture going into next week's game. MOTM: Sam Bingham DOTD: Tom Hindle

W (2-0) 25/02/2017 - M3 vs March Town (H / L) FINALLY 3 POINTS......... |

MENS 3RD XI - 25/02/2017 VS MARCH TOWN (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 25/02/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 25/02/2017 HEADLINE: Finally 3 points......... LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: After what was a stressful week for the Norwich City captains the 3rd XI managed to bring a squad together for the fixture against March, which was more than could be said for the travelling opposition who turned up with a 10 man squad. Norwich started as would be expected against a hinder team with a high tempo and a lot of ball retention, however with little to show from it in the first half. The ball found itself into some very positive positions but with a lack of finesse, poor first touch and decision making Norwich were unable to break the dead lock. Some close attempts came from Matt Brine with an unbelievable run with a narrow miss and Will Kidner hitting the post were just 2 of over handful that went begin to be finished. The curse of the bouncing ball would haunt the Norwich throughout the day. March showed little to none in the attacking front in the first half with Geoff Spencer and Chris Perry easily stopping the few attacks that were mounted. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw with City kicking themselves for not having a healthy lead. The 2nd half start much as the first started with City knowing it was only going to be a matter of time before a goal was scored. Al Patterson and Paul Roy were making a lot room and chances down the right hand side with a the extra man advantage the space and time was there to mount some great plays. As was the same on the left side with Rob Duffy and Tom Ling but still City were finding it hard to break the dead lock. Finally City managed a get a goal on the score board, some good work on the right found Matt Brine in the circle his shot slightly wide was pulled back by Adi Land from close range to allow the ball to crawl over the line. This spurred the City side on again a few close chances that on any other would have gone over the line were missed. March could have been close to mounting a come back when breaking quick caught the City defence out but some great work by Patterson and Spencer kept them at bay. New arrival to the 3rd team Doug Tomlinson made his mark by playing some cool and basic hockey helping to keep the chances coming in City’ favour. Joe Konieczny was unfortunate to miss the easiest chance of the game when Land played a ball across the open goal but the notorious bounce that haunted the city team caught him out. Finally City were able to put the game out of reach when Land stuck again with a close range effort allowing City some breathing room. Felix Broadway worked relentlessly in the middle of the field to continue to mount attacks but City were unable to extend their lead. The march keeper had an outstanding game keeping them in the game for the majority of the match. City walked away with a win which on paper was a certainty against a 10 man team but they certainly made it hard work and walked away knowing the score line should have been much better. Norwich Travel to Cambridge this next week for a match against Cambridge South in is what is bound to be the most crucial game of the season for survival where only a win will be exceptable.
