MENS 1ST XI - 23/11/2025 VS OXFORD HAWKS (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 23/11/2025 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 23/11/2025 HEADLINE: New Foes Play Out End-to-end Affair LEAGUE: CONFERENCE MIDLANDS VENUE: Oxford RESULT: 1-3 loss REPORT: Oxford Hawks hosted Norwich City in a pivotal Men’s Conference Midlands clash, a fixture that represented a step into the unknown as the two sides met for the very first time. There were, however, some familiar faces on display; two former Norwich City players featured on the Oxford scoresheet, alongside several others previously encountered in the league. While Norwich arrived determined to maintain their promotion push, they were under no illusions about the scale of the task. Having established themselves as a top-four force in the Conference East, they knew this trip to Oxfordshire would provide a defining test of their Midlands credentials. The match began with high intensity as both sides looked to play fast hockey, testing their respective attacks with short, sharp passing and long aerial threats. As the game became increasingly stretched, Norwich City began to take advantage. Max Wilson sent a shot narrowly over the bar, and a Cameron Cooke drag flick was well saved, before another Wilson effort, following a mazy run through four defenders, flashed across the face of goal. Norwich certainly should have been ahead, and it remained to be seen if they would rue those missed opportunities. The visitors finally broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when a Thomas Cooke drag flick rewarded a strong opening period for the traveling side. However, despite holding a 1–0 lead at halftime, the momentum shifted as the game progressed. Oxford Hawks tightened their defensive lines and began to exploit growing gaps in the Norwich midfield. The turnaround began in the 39th minute when the Hawks equalized, shifting the pressure back onto the visitors. Norwich’s composure wavered almost immediately, and just two minutes later, Oxford struck again to move 2–1 ahead. Norwich attempted to fight back, but two green cards in quick succession hampered their momentum just as they pushed for a leveling goal. Despite further chances from a pair of penalty corners and well-saved strikes from Cameron Cooke and Ben Chapman, the Oxford defense held firm. In the closing stages, Norwich pulled their goalkeeper in a final roll of the dice. However, Oxford put the game beyond reach, capitalizing on the empty net to score from a penalty corner. Although Oxford received a yellow card in the final minutes, there was too little time for Norwich to capitalize on the numerical advantage. The final whistle confirmed a 3–1 win for Oxford Hawks. A result that served as a major statement in their quest for the top spot and left Norwich reflecting on missed chances and a calamitous ten-minute spell in the third quarter that ultimately cost them the points.
