W (1-0) 13/10/2018 - W1 vs Sevenoaks 2 (H / L) HOME WIN - KEEP THEM COMING! |
---|
WOMENS 1ST XI - 13/10/2018 VS SEVENOAKS 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: Home Win - Keep Them Coming! LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: NORWICH, TAVERHAM RESULT: CITY 1, SEVENOAKS 0 REPORT: On a sunny autumn day, NC welcomed Sevenoaks to TRF. The 1st half was evenly matched with both teams winning but not converting short corners and Mikayla Glover in the City goal was called into action to make some crucial saves. Just before half time, a great flowing move was started by Harriet Johnson who took a quick sideline hit to find Angela Hindle at centre midfield, who then found Jocasta Staines on the left who then fed a quick ball to Krystal Bishop in the D, who coolly turned her marker and reverse swept to nutmeg the on-rushing keeper to make the scoreline 1-0 to NC. NC started the second half at high intensity to build on a slim lead. There were some great passing and phases of play between Sophie Mullan, Ellie Brine and Olivia Williams on the left and Rachael Phillips, Abbie Ingham and Emily Francis on the right. With the hard working Rachel Mayne switching the ball at centre midfield. NC found themselves camped in the opposition’s 23m, but were unable to convert the numerous chances created with balls flashing across infront of goal needing a touch. However, NC were at times caught on the break when the ball found a skilful opposition player who ran the length of the pitch and the defensive unit of Fong Chung, Suzy Mitchell, Sally Rose and Ellie Pitcher were called into action. It became nervy towards the end of the game as Sevenoaks were awarded 5 consecutive short corners because NC couldn’t clear their lines cleanly, which ended when Ellie Pitcher cleared a shoulder high looping ball off the goal line. NC held on for a well deserved 1-0 win. POTM went to Fong Chung for her many interceptions and work rate.

WOMENS 2ND XI - 13/10/2018 VS FELIXSTOWE 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: 8-0 win south of the border LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Felixstowe RESULT: Win 8-0 REPORT: With a strong squad and still buzzing from a well deserved win last week, the girls were ready and raring to get another win. The first 20 minutes were a challenge - a slow pitch saw us trying to settle into our usual type of slick play, but it took longer than we expected. However, a goal from Rosie Humphrey halfway into the first half from a good run from Sophia Basset relaxed the team and we began to play our usual flowing hockey. This was closely followed by a goal from Hannah Jarvis which saw us go into half time with the upper hand. Filled with confidence from our good link up play that we finished the first half with, we started even stronger in the second half. The goals soon followed from Alice Gill, a second from Rosie, and a fabulous team goal that came from slick transferring round the back up to the right wing allowing our debutant player Irene Ramirez to strike an unstoppable shot into the top right corner. This was proceeded by a strong reverse shot from Sophia, a well-executed short corner strike from captain Helen Busfield and finally a follow-up shot from Milly Brown. We did well to keep a clean sheet, especially after Serena Scott’s interesting clearance straight to their centre forward who nearly got a shot away. Maybe this was to spice the game up a bit from a defensive point of view, particularly since Serena only had to touch the ball four times during the whole match! A great performance and a fabulous win - well done girls!

WOMENS 3RD XI - 13/10/2018 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 4 (A) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: Annabel hat-trick away from home LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Harleston Magpies RESULT: 2-5 (win) REPORT: Norwich City women’s 3s travelled to Harleston to face Magpies 4s on a surprisingly hot October morning. The game started slowly in the heat, but Magpies opened the scoring with a goal in the first 15 minutes. City came back hard with solid passing through the midfield, expertly directed by Marie Hood, who passed to player of the match Annabel Pounder for the visitor’s first goal. On the stroke of half time, City won a short corner, which led to a goal from Effie Bowley, following help from play-makers Marie and Annabel. A high-intensity second half ensued, plus another goal from Annabel. Forward Matilda Butterworth then scored herself after winning City a short corner, putting the visitors well ahead. Determined Magpies clawed back a goal and kept up the tempo. But City replied with a third individual goal from Annabel and a fifth for her team. Final score 2-5 to a strong visiting side.

WOMENS 5TH XI - 13/10/2018 VS WATTON 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: Hockey played with heart. LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 1 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham Recreational Facilities RESULT: NCHC Womens 5s 2, Watton 2s 1 REPORT: Yet another fantastic win by Norwich City Women 5s. There really seems to be no stopping them! Despite a strong and young looking Watton team, Norwich City Women 5s once again used their experience to rule the game. The womens set out in their slick formation, quickly intercepting the push back to regain possession. Watton womens showed some skills gaining a quick goal from an easy break. This is the pressure City needed, pressing hard in the D they equalised with a soft touch over the line by Lucy McNarry. Unsuccessfully converting many short corners the half time score remained 1-1. Although looking slightly sluggish, City looked much stronger, holding formation much better. Many attempts didn't pay off, until finally a famous Molly spin and flick hit the back board! Making the final result 2 - 1 to City.

L (1-3) 13/10/2018 - W6 vs Herlings 1 (A / L) OLD-SCHOOL HOCKEY ON A GRASS PITCH WAS A TOUGH BATTLE FOR CITY 6S |
---|
WOMENS 6TH XI - 13/10/2018 VS HERLINGS 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: Old-school hockey on a grass pitch was a tough battle for City 6s LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: East Harling Recreation Ground RESULT: 3-1 loss REPORT: Herlings are the last women's hockey team in Norfolk who still play their home games on grass, making it a tough match for City 6s. Many team members had never played on grass before and took a while to adjust to how the ball bobbles over the stick or comes to a halt when it hits a tussock. With a sloping pitch, play also naturally gravitated towards the bottom of the dip, making most of the attack against City come up the left side of the pitch in the first half. It was a case of forget slapping and instead just whack the ball as hard as you can up the pitch and hope somebody will get on the end of it - or not! City played incredibly well in the first half, holding off Herlings relatively easily. With such a tough surface to play on and Herlings playing a long-ball game from 16s, it was harder to launch a neat passing attack and City's game was mainly defensive. However, eventually a nice triangle of passing between Josine Van den Berg, Julia Marchant and Amy Hinchliffe saw Amy score. The goal from player-of-the-match Amy, on her first game back after a nasty hand injury, gave City a one nil lead into the break. It was tougher after half time as Herlings were awarded repeated short corners. Their whack-it-up-the-pitch game was increasingly effective and eventually saw Herlings score three goals in the second half, against an exhausted City. City had played well, albeit defensively in the second half, but were undone by bobbling balls, hard-hit 16s, the unpredictability of grass and a sloping pitch where the ball disappeared several times into the undergrowth and the umpire had to call for a new ball!

L (1-2) 13/10/2018 - M2 vs Old Southendian 1 (H / L) CITY HARD DONE BY IN A CLOSE FOUGHT GAME |
---|
MENS 2ND XI - 13/10/2018 VS OLD SOUTHENDIAN 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: City hard done by in a close fought game LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-2 Loss REPORT: City hosted Old Southendians on a beautiful autumnal day at Taverham. The game was delayed however by the away team struggling to get their team to the pitch on time. With that in mind City started poorly and within the space of a minute they conceded a very sloppy goal. Poor marking and bad communication saw the ball tapped in over the line after millet had made the initial save. 1-0 to the visitors. City responded well with an excellent 10 minute spell that saw them create 3 good chances, a better final ball or first touch could have levelled the game. City went into half time trailing the visiting side but with plenty of positives to take from the first half. A tweak in personnel and some words of wisdom from the first half’s best player (according to the opposition) Hindle meant city started on the front foot. The first 15 ebbed and flowed and again City had their chances. The clearest coming from Richard Green who’s pass come shot ended up wide of the post. Obviously this wasn’t his fault though as he was using an unfamiliar wand as he’d forgotten to bring his own to the game. City then deservedly found an equaliser, A precise drag flick from Elliott to bring the sides level. 1-1 The game then became a bit frantic with both teams and both umpires getting a bit hot under the collar. A heavy handed tackle on Elliott provoked a bad reaction that saw both players take a trip off the pitch for a rest. A poor display of discipline saw Hindle take a breather and then later a bad challenge by Gill also saw him take a break in the sin bin. All this however was nothing compared to the controversy that followed. The visitors scored the winner with a very dubious decision. The ball was areal’d to the top of the City D for a forward to run on to with Millet the only player between the ball and the City goal. The two players arrived simultaneously at the ball and the opposing player hung out a stick to score a well taken goal. Was this not a free hit to City? Well in short yes but unfortunately this was only found out when chatting to the official after the game. City went 2-1 down. City had a last minute short corner to try and get a deserved equaliser but the routine let them down and they ended the game with nothing. Despite Crichton emptying a whole water bottle over the dry sticky pitch. City left the pitch feeling gutted and as though they deserved something from the game but another industrious performance wasn’t enough this time. MOTM – Harry gill for his engine like performance TYFC – The best player on the day (according to the opposition) Hindle

D (4-4) 13/10/2018 - M3 vs St Ives 1 (H / L) A GAME OF TWO HALVES... |

MENS 3RD XI - 13/10/2018 VS ST IVES 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: A game of two halves... LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: TRF RESULT: 4-4 Draw REPORT: City started this game by playing some wonderful hockey that created chances, which for a change this season, were put away. Rees, Murray and Perry all scored in the first half to give City the lead. St Ives were becoming ever increasingly frustrated as they couldn't get the ball moving against the City pressure. If only the match finished at half time. The second half saw St Ives score early on due to a sequence of poor passes, and it wasn't long until they scored another with poor defending. This spurred them on and their confidence grew. City had fewer chances in the second half but did have a number of short corners, including shots that hit the post and forcing a few saves by the keeper. Lloyd scored one of these chances, however St Ives soon scored again and a final goal for them made the scores level. City felt hard done by after a short corner strike was saved, and the follow up shot to go in, only for it to be disallowed after the umpires conferred. A short corner in the last 30 seconds of the match came to nothing and the match finished a draw, leaving City frustrated at having thrown away the lead and for decisions not going their way. MOM was Toby Pallister for outstanding work in the middle of the pitch. TYFC: Dan Cheeseman for taking a break after contesting an umpire's decision.

MENS 4TH XI - 13/10/2018 VS FELIXSTOWE 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: Thriller in Felixstowe LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: Felixstowe Community Hub RESULT: 3-3 draw REPORT: Norwich City 4th XI Men travelled to Felixstowe on an unseasonably warm October afternoon and soon realised this was not going to be a formality After a good start, City were able to gain control of proceedings with debutants Ben Withers and Rio Iaccarino providing a constant threat. It was 'Man of the Match' Withers who broke the deadlock with excellent close control in the 'D' forcing a great save, only for the rebound to allow him to smash the ball home from a tight angle. Felixstowe soon levelled to 1-1, then poor City defending allowed Felixstowe to take the lead 2-1 at halftime. After the restart, City were soon back on top again, and rightly drew level via the trusty stick of Rio Iaccarino, 2-2 A tight contest then ensued until a momentary lack of concentration from the ever-reliable Koniecnzy in City's goal. A mistimed clearance saw him 'clean out' a Felixstowe forward off the ball and the umpire had no choice but to award a penalty stroke and a 5 minute yellow for City's goalkeeper. Captain Ingham put the helmet on but was unable to stop the stroke, 2-3 With City down to 10 men, against all the odds they drew level once more. It was Withers again, using his pace and mesmerising skill. With the clever use of a one-two with Chapman, Withers scored easily City pushed hard in the final minutes, and in spite of several short corners, they were unable to find the winning goal. Final score 3-3 Man of the Match: Ben Withers

City started the first 10 minutes of the game strong and were unfortunate not to take the lead early on when Mark Circuit pushed a fantastic ball through to Shaun Ferris, who put the ball just inches wide of the post. Thetford then began to find there pace, with some quick attackers managing to burst past our players who were struggling in the intense heat of sun (Odd for an October morning?). Thetford went on to score 3 goals through long balls into the D, cementing their place at the top of the table and unfortunately ending the 5's unbeaten start to the season.

MENS 6TH XI - 13/10/2018 VS I-ES 5 (H) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 13/10/2018 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 13/10/2018 HEADLINE: Well deserved draw LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 5 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT:drew 2-2 REPORT:we had a large squad for this game, Nigel worked out a formation that would give everyone fair pitch time. The first half was a very even one and at halftime it was 0-0 , the team played with far more purpose than the last couple of weeks. In the second half Simon scored an excellent reverse stick goal unfortunately we did hang onto the lead for too long as IES scored from a short corner and then took the lead after fairly poor defending. We did not give up and in the last seconds of the game we got a short corner which lead to Nick converting to make it a very deserved draw . Nick was nominated for man of the for his excellent goal and save off the line earlier in the game. Thanks to Grocer for offering to play in goal for us . We had some very good comments from IES after the game which gives us encouragement for the rest of the season. Unfortunately we still prop the league up .

W (6-0) 14/10/2018 - MC vs IES U14 (A / EH U14B) GOOD AWAY WIN TO KICK START CUP RUN... HOPEFULLY |

COLTS XI - 14/10/2018 VS IES U14 (A) TEAM: Colts XI DATE: 14/10/2018 FIXTURE: Colts XI VS 14/10/2018 HEADLINE: Good away win to kick start cup run... Hopefully LEAGUE: Under 14 Tier 1 Cup VENUE: Ipswich RESULT: 0-6 Win REPORT:Everyone arrived on time and raring to go at the Ipswich school ground to play in the first round of the competition against IES. The pitch is a fantastic facility and it was a warm and bright morning....perfect conditions! The Norwich City team was constructed with strong players including newcomers Duncan Mallett James Cross and Max Wilson and the match began with heads high and a positive attitude. Within minutes Jack Whitlam had received the ball and manoeuvered it cautiously round the keeper and into the back of the net. Some excellent passing back and around the edges secured a further two goals from Ollei millet and James Cross before the half-time whistle. Into the second-half IES never really posed a threat, the defence was strong with some fine interventions from Archie Ward, Sam Hyatt and Krishna Patel. We missed some opportunities to further increase our lead but the midfielders worked hard to keep getting the ball up the field and present more chances. The subsequent two goals scored by Duncan and Freddie were secured after some superb passing and control of the ball down the length and breadth of the pitch and some good cohesive teamwork. Jack completed the game with a sixth goal with a reverse stick scooping the ball up high and straight into the back of the net - this time it paid off! Huge credit should be given to Sam Hancock, Max, Matty, Joe and Toby who worked tirelessly to get the ball up the pitch and of course Seb who managed to stave off a few challenges to keep a clean sheet. The final score 6-0 ... a credible score from a very able team which showed potential to go far in this competition. Come on Norwich City under 14!

L (1-3) 14/10/2018 - MC vs Harleston Magpies U16 (H / EH U16B) DEFENSIVE MASTERCLASS |
---|
COLTS XI - 14/10/2018 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES U16 (H) TEAM: Colts XI DATE: 14/10/2018 FIXTURE: Colts XI VS 14/10/2018 HEADLINE: Defensive masterclass EHA U16 Championship VENUE: Taverham RESULT: Norwich City 1 - 3 Harleston Magpies REPORT: This was a real backs to the wall effort against a very strong Magpies side that created a lot of chances. City fell behind inside the first two minutes when defensive indecision allowed Emms to rifle the ball home. City were lucky not to fall further behind as they struggled to deal with the visitor’s pace on and off the ball but gradually they found their feet to create a few chances of their own. As is so often the case when you have to almost constantly defend City’s play got deeper and deeper and the home side found it hard to sustain meaningful possession inside the opposing half. When Wiggins made it 2-0 the signs looked ominous but in true testament to their character City defended as a team brilliantly. Yes we were indebted to some outstanding saves from man of the match Luke Elwes and some fantastic tackling from our new centre defensive pairing, Alex Tomkinson and Reuben Cooke but Magpies did not have it all their own way and we so nearly made it 2-1 when a blistering move in the forward line saw Freddie Paterson go just wide following a scintillating run and cross by Rafe Lochore. Whilst the second half saw Magpies have plenty of shots we had brilliant saves, amazing tackles and a couple of fantastic goal line interceptions (Ethan Rushton’s being particularly memorable). City nearly made it 2-1 when a thunderous short corner shot from Rafe was somehow blocked by a player who admitted he genuinely knew nothing about how he’d stopped it - that’s just the way it goes sometimes! Taylor eventually made it 3-0 but still City didn’t give up despite tired legs and a few unfamiliar positions and they finished the match on a high when Rafe score a scorcher of a goal from the inside left channel. When we stayed calm and played neat one-twos we looked really good - thank you for commitment and never say die attitudes.
