LADIES 2ND XI - 12/11/2016 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 4 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 12/11/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 12/11/2016 HEADLINE: The Mighty Comeback LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: 3-3 REPORT: Norwich City 2’s were eager to slot away some goals this week after an interesting game last week and warmed up with umph and excitement. From the off they had the majority of possession, with slick passing and movement off the ball creating many opportunities. The first couple of chances came from quick runs down the wing with Milly Brown and Emily Francis wreaking havoc for the defenders. A few short corners came and went. It was then when the ball was overturned that Harleston made one of their few forays into our defensive 25. With a short corner won and converted it was time for us to kick into action. A great passing move from Angela Hindle, ‘and Hannah Jarvis meant a cross from Milly Brown came into the D, Kate Hartlands shot was fumbled by the keeper and Emily Francis tried to slot home the leftovers but a defiant defender conceded a flick that Hannah Jarvis put home with ease, 1-1. Leigh Ann Worrall and Annabelle Pheonix were linking up well in defence and we were keeping possession fantastically, Jenny Brine looked at home in our defence (thank you once again) and linked up well with Rosie Humphrey who put a great stint in, in defence despite usually playing further up the pitch! After a long period of fruitless hockey Harleston broke again and notched up their second short corner and second goal 2-1. After half time it was Harleston who took charge, with City looking lack lustre for a few minutes, another short corner was won and once again they capitalised, with a ball deflected into Karren Dagless’s chest and they just managed to creep the flick in past Serena Scott who did amazingly well to get a stick to it in the bottom corner unfortunately it was just that little bit too powerful. City’s never say die attitude was now needed more than ever as the rain continued to hammer down at Taverham. With 10 minutes to go City clicked backed into gear which had been lacking since the end of the first half and began to dominate the ball again and push Harleston back into their own 25. Opportunities were now being created on a frequent basis but the ball would not get over the line. This included a great passage of play by City from one end of the pitch to the other as Karren Dagless and Angela Hindle exchanged passes before a well judged defence cutting through ball to Emily Francis who then played a perfectly timed ball onto the onrushing Ellie Brine in the D, Kate Hartland well positioned by the near post and Ellie found her with another perfectly judged pass. The move was almost complete but Kate was unlucky to only deflect her well-judged flick into the post! However, Kate Hartland didn’t have to wait long for her goal and with 2 minutes left on the clock City gave themselves a lifeline and a chance of an unlikely point. Another great ball from Angela Hindle found Kate free towards the top of the D who remained composed to slot the ball to the left of the outrushing keeper and into the bottom right corner. With less than 2 minutes now left and with cries of ‘Too Little Too Late’ hey Ali Wardale – don’t doubt us!! It was a ball from Milly Brown into the D that fell neatly to Emily Francis at the back post to flick past the keeper, 3-3. In a game where we held over 75% of the possession it was tough to find ourselves 3-1 down in the blink of an eye, but our overwhelming team spirit and never die attitude meant we clawed the game back from the brink and remain undefeated. Good effort girls.

LADIES 3RD XI - 12/11/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (A) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 12/11/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 12/11/2016 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Dragons Dens RESULT: 2-1 (L) REPORT: NCHC Womens 3s made the short trek to Dragons Den on a cold and drizzly afternoon to take on Dragons 3s who were just 2 points above us in the league. We were keen to try and take at least a point for this fixture but knew it would be tough, especially since 4 members of the team had already played earlier in the day. City started strong and the play was end to end with chances for both teams. City were eventually successful after Kate Hartland took a straight strike from a short corner, which rebounded off the keepers pads to Emily Greenway, who calmly laid the ball off to Jenni Stanghan who was on the P spot and able to tuck the ball in between the keepers legs. The score at half time was 1-0 to City and with several of our Womens 2s supporting us on the side-lines we were determined to stay in the lead. Unfortunately Dragons ramped up the pressure and City seemed to lose their structure, allowing Dragons to break away and even the scoreline. City reacted to this and mounted numerous attacks, gaining several short corners, but none were successful. Another break-away runner from Dragons managed to get the better of City’s defence and put the score line at 2-1 to Dragons. End to end play continued until the final whistle and City were disappointed to come away with no points after such a positive start. POTM was awarded to Gemma Sargent for her work rate and determination.

LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE:TRF RESULT:3-0 REPORT: On a very wet day City 4's were ready to face the Dragons 4s, who were currently bottom of the table. The match started well after a good pre-match team talk and we managed to keep possession, continuing to put pressure on Dragons. This pressure soon resulted in a short corner, which after a rebound from their keeper resulted in Amelia Ellis-Baumber scoring the first goal. At half time the score remained at 1-0. During the second half we continued to work well as a team putting passes together, using the space and finally resulting in a well worked goal from Holly Robinson. Soon after debutante Charlotte Grundy scored a third goal and ensured we did not have a nervous last 10 minutes. The whole team should be pleased with their performance, as everyone continued at a high intensity throughout, despite the poor weather conditions. The final score was 3-0, a great win! Match Report kindly provided by our well deserved POTM Lydia Ellis-Baumber. Grateful thanks to Simeon for manning the bench today too!

LADIES 6TH XI - 12/11/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 6 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 12/11/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 12/11/2016 HEADLINE: Deadock LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 0-0 REPORT: Local derby deadlock again Previous season’s matches between these two local derby 6th teams have ended in a draw. However, second-in-the-league City were hoping to capitalise on their recent good form and run of wins to end the deadlock against a currently mid-table Dragons. It was not to be. Yet again the two teams were evenly match with play constantly moving from end to end. Although they have scored few goals this season, this Dragons team have one of the best defensive records in the Norfolk league, letting in just a handful of goals. City knew it would be a tough job to score and so it proved to be. City started well for the first 10 minutes, but a well-prepared Dragons team had come expecting a difficult game and their captain had instructed them to press their whole team high apart from three players and to intercept at pace and break down City’s passing patterns. Towards the end of the first half, City were struggling to move the ball around in their usual patterns and found themselves facing more circle penetrations than they have defended in the past few matches. However, the D unit and some admirable saves from goalkeeper Anna Linsmith kept the ball safely out of the back of the net. The second half saw City come out fighting harder and growing more accustomed to a new formation that they were playing for the first time in this match. As a result City managed more circle penetrations and direct threats on Dragons’ goal, including a just-wide deflection by Sharon Phillips. However, the well-drilled Dragons defensive unit scuppered several attempts on goal and four short-corners and City had to work hard to contain Dragons’ repeated breaks as the ball was cleared from them after a Norwich attack. Plenty of chances, one of our toughest games this season and yet again deadlock. Player of the match went to Emma Turner for her skillful runs down the line out of the defence.

The City team, drawn mostly from recent 'Back to Hockey' recruits, had the better of the first half with strong running and some neat play resulting in goals from Charlotte Girling and Rose Byrne. UEA came back strongly in the second half scoring an early goal and going on to score 3 more. City, driven on by a Player of the Match performance from Katy Walker and the indefatigable Charlotte Girling, went close on a couple of occasions but could not find the net. Although the result was negative this was City's best result of the season and the improved performance will build confidence for future games.

W (5-4) 13/11/2016 - M1 vs Bishops Stortford (A / EH MT3) CITY VICTORIOUS IN END TO END ENCOUNTER |
---|
MENS 1ST XI - 13/11/2016 VS BISHOPS STORTFORD (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 13/11/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 13/11/2016 HEADLINE: City victorious in end to end encounter LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION B VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: City travelled away to Bishop’s Stortford in the EH Trophy welcoming debutants George Brine and Thomas Ling, and welcoming back back George Anthony for his first appearance for the 1s in four years after university (apparently he was Durham 1s… Big time!). Despite a rather poor preparation for the game, City actually started very strongly, utilising the aerial to messrs Gill and Wardale creating chances in behind the Stortford back line. The first goal, however, came after good work from George Brine in the centre of the pitch to beat his man and play in Harry Gill down the right, then applying a cross which Stortford managed to get a stick to, only for Chris Wardale to convert after the ball spilled behind him to the top of the D, and, running away from goal, struck the ball low into the corner for 1-0. However, with these chances and not converting perhaps as many as City should have, City took their foot of the gas a bit and Stortford found their way back into the game with a drag flick of a penalty corner and then took the lead with a back post tapin for 2-1. As half time began to approach City responded to this new challenge, again going to the aerial Harry Gill found himself in on goal. He smashed the ball straight at the keeper, but the keeper stood his ground (perhaps electing no to go to ground as on a previous one on one Harry smashed one directly into his helmet!); luckily the rebound came straight back to him, so again he smashed the ball this time beating the keeper for 2-2. Some neat play down the left saw Skinner enter the D on the left hand side, and from a tight angle smashed a backhand through the keeper’s midriff and into the net for 3-2 City. The second half was a game that lost all structure (not that it had much in the first place) and became a bit of a free-for-all with a few more cards handed out to boot. City managed to extend their lead to 4-2 after a penalty corner taken directly to Tom Cooke on the left hand slide to play his world renowned ‘slider’, besting the keeper at his near post. From this point Stortford really started to apply the pressure, realising that they needed to take more risks and press harder if they were going to get themselves back into the match. Their main threat came from short corners, with a well drilled straight drag flick, but no variations. City began to come under more and more pressure, especially when finding themselves down to ten men when firstly George Anthony saw yellow for a being overly physical in the tackle and then Tom Cooke saw green for reacting (what did he actually do… no one knows?) to some foul play from Stortford. During these phases it must be said that Ali Cooke in goal did make some fine saves from the penalty corners that ensued, however was beaten on two occasions, although was not helped by his post man on one occasion. With the score back level City new they needed to dig deeper and find something more. One David Skinner duly obliged. He did something we’re not as familiar as we’re used to these days – he tore down the left hand side of the pitch into the D and won a penalty corner. Tom Cooke (having this time understood the call for the routine properly…!) played a lovely ball to the far post off the top, for Dave Skinner to come sliding with the glancing finish past the helpless defender on the post. As time was running out, Stortford pushed more and more for yet another equaliser, winning a penalty corner on the final play of the game. This was it. Fitting that it came down to one of the themes of the game – the Stortford dragflicker versus the mighty Ali Cooke in the City net. One last round. The flicker hooked up a beauty and must have thought he’d sent the game to strokes, only to be denied by Ali Cooke flying to his right with a magnificent stick save! One of many fine saves too I might add. City won an extremely eventful game, and honestly I could go on and on about various other moments and chances within the game. Particular thanks go to the great support we had down there from the womens cheerleading squad of Gina, Emily, Jo, Harriet, Oli, and Flic. Debutants George Brine and Tom Ling put in particularly impressive displays, with the later sneaking ahead of the former in votes to take home the Man of the Match award.

W (4-3) 12/11/2016 - M1 vs Blueharts (A / L) CITY COMEBACK IN SECOND HALF TO CLAIM ALL THREE POINTS |
---|
MENS 1ST XI - 12/11/2016 VS BLUEHARTS (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 12/11/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 12/11/2016 HEADLINE: City comeback in second half to claim all three points LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION B VENUE: Hitchin RESULT: 3-4 REPORT: Norwich City travelled to Blueharts on the back of a solid performance against Felixstowe hoping to keep pressure on the two teams above them in the league. That first half saw not what Nick 'The Captain' Jones was looking for as the defence had to work hard on a number of occasions to keep the score level. Norwich's best chance perhaps fell to Chris 'leading scorer' Wardale who was unable to find that back of the net after some quick right side play. Blueharts did eventually break the deadlock when Cookie 'The Younger' was beaten near the end of the first half even though he was manly 'The Man Mountain' for the majority of the game. The second half started better for Norwich but some quick Blueharts play around Tom 'Only One' Cooke 'The Older' forced him to surrender a short corner. The resulting flick found the net but this did not affect the games as some would think. This score seemed to galvanise the team and Ed 'Not as Old as You think' Sutton found some pace and skills linking well with Ali 'hmmmm' Husband and Sam 'Mini Jones' Tomlinson creating problems for the Blueharts midfield. Norwich began to press and Jeremy 'The Old Man' Elliott made a solid tackle on the press and found himself in the D. A backhand chip beat the keeper and Norwich were on the scoreboard. Norwich soon found the equaliser when some solid back play from Harry 'Silent Assassin' Brown was able to link the team together through Louis 'What is his real name' Preston, Chirs 'Leading scorer' Wardale to Dave 'Split Personality' Skinner who was able to get the ball across the D at pace for Nick 'The Captain' Jones to come sliding in and score. Following what can only be described as Dave 'No Banter' Skinner's pedantic nature he was sent to the bin for 5mins. This caused a few issues and Norwich they soon found themselves down again after some play down the Blueharts left. Norwich were undeterred though, and despite still being down to ten men found a quick response. Ed 'Not as Old as You think' Sutton received the ball just inside the Blueharts half and neatly rolled his man, surprising even himself with his pace as he burst through a gap in the Blueharts defence, entering the D on the right hand side and crossing neatly to Chris 'The leading Scorer' Wardale to score his bread and butter the tapin as he made the lead in front of his marker towards the ball, putting Norwich to level again. Throughout this period Richard 'Lord of the Rings' Green was solid at the back and City were able to build more structured atackes from this platform. Luke 'Hitchhiker' Cordon was not happy. But he was happier then Tom 'The Nice Guy' Cox who pushed hard together with Gabriel 'Archangel' Marchant to push the play. Norwich would not be denied today. A short corner was won by Norwich with 3 and a half minutes left in the game. The tension, the suspense. The, whatever, somehow Nick 'The Captain' Jones was able to score on the backhand into the far corner after the rebound from the dragflick fell to him and put Norwich back in charge. Who knew he had a backhand too? The all-round player! The remaining minutes were full of punting the ball up field. Confusion reigned when a late whistle somehow found Mr Elliott sin binned putting Norwich back under pressure. Ed 'Not as Old as You think' Sutton even managed to get on of their players carded for pushing a little too hard. Norwich managed to hold out the game and secured a 4-3 victory away from home. There were some massive smiles as Guy 'Jose Mourinho' Marchant showed his love for the team. Next week Norwich entertain West Hearts 2s at home in a game sure to be full for 'licence to skill' and classic Jonesy moments.

MENS 2ND XI - 12/11/2016 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 12/11/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 12/11/2016 HEADLINE: Convincing win over local rivals LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 VENUE: TRF (Taverham) RESULT: 5-2 Win REPORT: Norwich city 2s went into this weekend’s fixture over local rival’s warranted nothing more than 3 points. With Harleston 2s only one place ahead in the table, City knew a win would earn them a much needed lift in the league table. City started brightly, and were rewarded when forward Silvester slotted in from close range to take the lead. Magpies then converted from a penalty corner to draw level. The game remained a tight affair but city managed to retake the lead 5 minutes before half time when Captain Hindle (Fatan) flicked the ball into the side netting following the breakdown of another city short corner. City went into the break 2-1 ahead. City started the second half well but where under attack from a more offensive magpies. City were able to withstand the pressure and with a quick break manage to get their third. This time it was Shearer who found the back of the net with a clever through the legs tap in. The two goal lead didn’t last too long as magpies pressuring finally paid off. A penalty corner drag flick beating Ainsthorpe in the city goal. City continued to create chances and where rewarded with a couple of their own penalty corners. This time it was Anthony’s turn to return the favour and fire his own drag flick into the roof of the magpies’ goal. City then wrapped up a fine performance with 10 minutes to spare. A good press from the forward line winning the ball on the edge of the circle created a chance for eventual man of the match Cheeseman who fired home into the bottom corner. All in all a great performance from city who seem to be finding their feet in what is still a very tough division 1. Next week… Long Sutton Away!

L (3-4) 12/11/2016 - M3 vs Cambridge Nomads 1 (A / L) POINT LOST IN THE LAST MINUTE... |

MENS 3RD XI - 12/11/2016 VS CAMBRIDGE NOMADS 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 12/11/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 12/11/2016 HEADLINE: Point lost in the last minute... LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: Cambridge Nomads, Coldmans Common RESULT: Norwich City 3s : 3 - 4 : Cambridge Nomads REPORT: Norwich travelled to Cambridge Nomads on what was to be a cold and miserable day but were optimistic about coming home with some points. Norwich started the game slowly and were immediately under a lot of pressure from the home side and Norwich were unable to fend off all the attacks and unfortunately went 1-0 down when a mistake occurred and gave the ball away allowing a quick pass to an unmarked Cambridge player in the circle who managed to sweep the ball past Millett in goal. Norwich did not let their heads go down and started to play some more flowing hockey and allowed Wardle to break down the right flank at pace and find a foot in the circle to give Norwich their first short corner. Perry was able to beat the Cambridge keeper with a drag flick bringing the score even again. Norwich then allowed the Cambridge side back into the lead through some sloppy play and not being able to clear their lines. Chasing the game once again Norwich regrouped and started to amount some attacks again. Anthony found himself with the ball on the right hand side of the Cambridge 23” and unleashed a rocket of a cross through the circle, the Cambridge players all left it believing it to be safe but were unaware of the well timed run from and dive from Konieczny to give it the final touch it needed to put it in the goal. Once again Norwich were on level terms and that is how the half ended. The second half started as the first ended with a lot of shared possession but with Cambridge slightly on top. Cambridge were able to push ahead once again when a failed ariel attempt fell straight to the Cambridge attacking team who were able to capitalise on the mistake and gave Millett little chance and gave Cambridge the lead. Norwich fought hard to stay in the game and create some chances and this lead to a string of short corners. One was narrowly saved heading for the bottom right corner by the line defender, another fell to Patterson who’s shot was skilfully saved by the keeper but lead to another corner and Norwich were able to convert it into a goal. A well timed 1:2 between Perry and Wardle left Perry with an easy tap in into an open goal, but It brought Norwich level once again. With 1 minute of the game remaining and everyone thought this was going to be draw, Norwich lost the ball on the half way line and allowed Cambridge to have one last ditch effort, they moved the ball down the left flank quickly and struggled their way into the circle, the resulting shot was stopped but was unable to clear the ball and it fell straight to the attacker whose quick pass across the circle found a player with virtually an open goal to shoot at and take the lead leaving Norwich no time mount an attack to steal a draw. The game ended 4-3 in favour of Cambridge Nomads. Norwich left disheartened after a well fought match where a point was arguable deserved. Norwich face next a local derby game against Norwich Dragons where they will be looking to add some points to this years campaign to stay in the league.

With Pelicans starting the brighter of the two teams, it looked like City were in for a long afternoon. Fortunately, City began to find their rhythm in midfield with Ralph Jackman winning the battle to allow Adie Land and Rees Leonard to build attacks on. With the movement of City’s front three consisting of Miles Doncaster, Declan Ordish and Jake Cushion it wasn’t long before City took the lead through a speculative shot from Cushion finding the back of the Pelicans goal. City saw out the half with some fine defensive performances from Simon Dale, Adam Richardson and Doug Tomlinson. City Started the second half looking in control but searching for a second goal. Pelicans were able to take advantage of this breaking at speed and with an overload on the far post were able to find a way past Guy Thrower in goal to level the scores. City, undeterred, stuck to the game plan and were soon in front again when Leonard found space in the D and converted his chance with a reverse shot. Pelicans seemed to implode at this point managing to rack up 2 green cards and 3 yellow cards in the second half. With so many cards it was good to see Jon Kidner keep his discipline and stay on the pitch! City, now with a numerical advantage, again found the back of the Pelicans goal this time through Doncaster with a well-placed finish over the advancing keeper. City finished the game with some last ditch defending from Frosty, Jamie Higginbotham and Thrower in goal to keep the score at 3-1. MOTM. Jamie Higginbotham

MENS DEVELOPMENT XI - 12/11/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS B (H) TEAM: Mens Development XI DATE: 12/11/2016 FIXTURE: Mens Development XI VS 12/11/2016 HEADLINE: City slickers quell Dragons' fire LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: NCHC 3-0 Dragons B REPORT: City's class and hard work on the training pitch proved the deciding factor in this local derby. From the start City mixed aggressive attacking with some delightful ball retention that stretched a Dragons side including two adults to the limit. Monty Platt opened the scoring in the first quarter after after the initial short corner shot was saved and he slotted his shot into the bottom corner. City had to wait until midway through the third quarter before Freddie Paterson, despite being closely marked by adults for most of the game, found space at the top of the D and produced a perfect pass for Toby Pallister to round the keeper and extend the lead. Paterson completed the scoring when he converted a trademark Jonty Black dribble and cross. It would be easy to let the scorers take the credit for the victory but it really was the passing and movement both on and off the ball that was the real difference between the two teams.. Black and Pallister combined silky stick skills with Duracell like energy to create space for the tireless efforts of Monty Platt, Robert McCall, Freddie Paterson and Alex Tomkinson on the forward line. The link up play with the midfield of debutant Malachy McDonnell, Sam Hyatt and the increasingly impressive duo of Joseph Roy and Elliot Fox was most pleasing to the eye with the ball being switched from one side of the pitch and back again in Barcelonaesque fashion. Whilst City did dominate the game the Dragons attacks were dealt with calmness and maturity by the blossoming defensive duo of Cameron Husband and Reuben Cooke. Ethan Rushton dealt with the rare shots that threatened his goal. Elliot Fox was named City man of the match for his excellent positional play and overall distribution.
