WOMENS 1ST XI - 12/01/2020 VS WAPPING (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 12/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 12/01/2020 HEADLINE: DAY 2 OF CITY’S DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: LEE VALLEY RESULT: 1-3 REPORT: After a good result on Saturday, Norwich were ready to face another strong side the following day. Wapping came out strong and played some tidy passing hockey. Norwich piled on the pressure in their attacking third, not allowing their opposition to get the ball out of defence. After a close battle in the middle of the field, the ball found its way through the line of yellow shirts to a 4 v 2 in Wapping’s favour, and the ball was slotted into the back of the net. From the restart, Norwich came back fighting with some great strength being provided in the middle by Jocasta Staines and Helen Busfield. Wapping continued to push forward and eventually won a corner which was neatly put away via deflection. City began to throw numbers forward in the hope of gaining a goal back. Micayla Tootill made a fleeting run forwards with the support of Ella Picton who converted from the top of the circle on her backhand bringing the score to 2-1. As the game was nearing the end, Wapping managed to steal one last goal before winning a corner on the final whistle. After facing 3 consecutive corners, Norwich finally cleared the ball and the game ended at 3-1.

D (2-2) 11/01/2020 - W1 vs East London 1 (H / L) CITY FIGHT BACK |

WOMENS 1ST XI - 11/01/2020 VS EAST LONDON 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: City Fight Back REPORT: LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 2-2 REPORT: After a slick start, with city working hard against a dynamic East London midfield, excellent passing from Stacey Lee and Alice Gill led Sophie Mullan to intercept the ball and drive the right wing to win a short corner. Olivia Williams received the ball to fire it into the penalty spot where Micayla Toothill deflected the ball into the top left hand corner - a fighting start for city. East London remained determined and shortly returned to win their first short corner, where following an initial City foot in the D, played advantage and found the back of the net on their second strike. It was a tense start to the second half, with end-to-end action, and City surviving two short corners. However, with City falling to ten players on the back of a sin-bin, East London gained momentum and took the lead with a second goal. Questions were being asked of City, but the team rallied brilliantly, with a passage of slick one touch passing, culminating in a scoring opportunity from Olivia Williams finding Krystal Bishop at the top of the D. Without a thought, and as ever reliable innovative in front of goal, scored a brilliant equaliser, despite excellent East London defending. Mention must go to Harriet Johnson for her feisty determination and to Ellie Brine for her ball distribution. PoM Sophie Mullan

WOMENS 2ND XI - 11/01/2020 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (A) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: City take the local derby bragging rights LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: Dragon's Den RESULT: 1-5 Win REPORT: Norwich City Womens 2s visited Norwich Dragons on Saturday, in a game they were determined to win. From the first whistle city attacked with intent with great passing play and spirit. Within 5 minutes they were two goals ahead, the first courtesy of Lizzie Cheeseman who used her silky skills to find the backboard. The second came from POTM Emily Francis who beat the onrushing defenders and calmly slotted the ball home after a fantastic well timed pass from Georgia Cleveland through the Dragons defence. For the next 15 minutes city continued to dominate with Milly Brown winning the team many short corners. Some close attempts didn’t quite come off for the hardworking Rosie Ringer but the team continued the great intensity. With 10 minutes left of the first half Dragons applied more pressure and our defensive unit mopped it up easily until a break away resulted in a shirt corner which was converted. Great build up play then resulted in Rosie Humphrey finding the goal and we were 3-1 up at half time. Two more goals came after half time with a short corner shot from Leigh-Ann Worrall starting the proceedings. Dragons again applied some pressure however Helen Busfield and Georgia Cleveland held the centre of the pitch strong and the defence ensured no goals would come. The final goal was the result of excellent team play, the ball was neatly passed through 5 players on the right of the pitch before Lizzie Cheeseman drove strongly into the D and Helen Busfield sprinted all the way from defence to the far post to slot the perfectly timed pass home. An all round great team performance ensured Norwich City took the 3 points in the Norwich derby.

WOMENS 3RD XI - 11/01/2020 VS EVERGREENS 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: Three goals for the 3s LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Greshams (away) RESULT: 0-3 (win) REPORT: City 3s started well against hosts Evergreens, switching the ball with confidence around the back and dominating the game. An unfortunate injury to one of the Evergreens players came early on. City then had to refocus after a period of stoppage and, having lacked a little urgency, stepped up to take the lead from a short corner, converted well by Emily Greenway. City’s second goal before half time came from a well placed shot at the top of the D from player of the match Marie Hood. The second half saw City up the work rate and compete more for the ball, continuing to work hard to shut down their competitive hosts. City’s defence also showed superb composure throughout the game. The whole team thoroughly deserved their third and final goal from another well worked short corner, where Kim Lusher slotted the ball in to Liv Greenway for her to drive the ball home. A valuable result for City, who wish the injured Evergreens player a speedy recovery.

Despite encouragement from Captain Emily and chief strategist Sue 😀, we fought valiantly as Harleston scored twice in play and from a short corner before halftime. Superstar goalie Anna worked tirelessly and Defence made a valiant effort against the constant subbing for fresh legged attack from Magpies. Great runs up to the D from Kristina in midfield for W4s, sadly, unable to convert goals. 3 further goals came from Magpies in 2nd half. Alex deserved POM for working hard in midfield. W4s look forward to a comeback next week.

WOMENS 5TH XI - 11/01/2020 VS EAST COAST 3 (A) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: A game of attack! LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 1 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE:East Coast 3 RESULT: 4:1 REPORT: An early pushback and start to the weekend saw a good game of hockey against East Coast 3. It was a tad cool and windy but it didn’t dampen the hockey spirit. East Coast had first pushback and got the game off to a good attacking start with great defending done by our almost full attacking squad! Allison McLellan and Carol McNarry kept us all in line. A great pass by Allison McLellan down the wing to Lucy McNarry and on to Olivia Broadway saw the first goal. A short corner followed with a great goal from Maria Marsh. East Coast fought back hard which resulted in a goal. Half time it was 2-1. The second half City came out hungry for more goals. Maddie Smith had some great runs on the left with good passes to Amy Hinchcliffe and in to the D. After a few short corners which were well defended by City, Lucy McNarry's speedy runs on the right lead to another two great goals to complete the second half. Maddie Smith was a well deserved player of the match. It was a good game and East Coast were great hosts.

W (3-1) 11/01/2020 - W6 vs Pelicans 3 (H / L) FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON FOR NORWICH 6S |
---|
WOMENS 6TH XI - 11/01/2020 VS PELICANS 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: First win of the season for Norwich 6s LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: 3-1 REPORT: It's been a tough season so far for the 6s with just two draws and no wins so far. This was a crucial fixture for the team, who went into the match sitting just above Pelicans 3s at the bottom of the table. Some excellent and supportive coaching in the days before from Fongy and much-appreciated pitch-side coaching from Thomas Ling really helped to boost morale this week. A well-prepared and upbeat team came out determined not to be beaten. City played an attacking game from the start – making repeated circle penetrations into Pelicans defensive D. But despite some good play, City conceded an-against-the-run-of-play goal early on after a ball hit a Pelicans foot but some play continued and the ball then bobbled up into the goal. Disheartened, but still determined, City fought back. Eventually a long pass from Josine Van den Berg to Emily ‘Winnie’ Winter was tapped in expertly by Sharon Phillips. Nerves steadied a little as we were back to an even score sheet. Then City took control of the game with another goal as a cross from Sofia Hancy was again netted by Sharon. Finally, City sealed a win in the second half when player of the match Caitlin Nicholson picked up the ball outside the D and took it in to make a strike which was caught by the keeper, but still managed to pop in. A hugely relieved City took three points and their much-needed first win of the season. A great win, but there will need to be a few more if City are to avoid relegation. However, it's crucial that they do or the club will find two of its women's teams sitting in the bottom league of the Norfolk division next season and no team at all in Division one.

L (1-2) 11/01/2020 - W7 vs Pelicans 4 (H / L) MAYBE IF THERE HAD BEEN A THIRD HALF.......... |

WOMENS 7TH XI - 11/01/2020 VS PELICANS 4 (H) TEAM: Womens 7th XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Womens 7th XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: MAYBE IF THERE HAD BEEN A THIRD HALF.......... LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 3 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: The womens 7's took a while to wake up on the lovely crisp morning this Saturday. Unfortunately an early goal from their top scorer Helen Lewis was disallowed due to it coming off a foot & then they didn't really find their momentum again in the first half. Pelicans managed to score shortly after leaving City trailing 1:0 at half-time However, after a motivational team talk at half-time by captain Sarah Bird & several jelly babies or vegetarian-option sweets we came back out fighting only to concede a fantastic goal by Pelicans early on which even fantastic keeper Jo couldn't do anything about. Boo !! But we then held strong in mid-field with Chloe & Sam putting in a sterling effort as RH & CH between them ( Sam playing CH for the first time ) Both were contenders for POTM which was closely fought between them with Chloe just pipping Sam to it. There was some fantastic passing of the ball between players Jan,Cat & Danielle at the back & some fantastic runs up the wings with Scarlett, Millie , Helen M & Nicky on fire. The forwards kept applying the pressure with newcomer Lauren having some near misses & also Emily narrowly missing out on the score card. Eventually our efforts payed off with a gap in the Pelicans defence & a pass into the D & well orchestrated finish by captain Sarah Bird to give us a goal back. Unfortunately we then failed to convert a couple of shorts so that the match finished with city 2:1 down It was a great team effort as always & I think if we had had just a little longer......................................................well who knows anything could have happened Well done Chloe on her POTM & to Sam close second.

MENS 1ST XI - 11/01/2020 VS EAST LONDON 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: Close game for city LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: Norwich City’s Mens 1st Team traveller down to the Olympic Park hoping to avenge the loss in the cup to East London before the festive break and continue there good form in the league on the build up to Christmas. City battled well in the first half, creating a number of opportunities however to no avail. It was East London who broke the deadlock with a good short routine putting Norwich 1-0 within the first quarter of the game. They pulled back level with a Jack Ingham strike from mid way inside the ‘D’. A good inception from Brown at the back created an overload with him finding Morgan in the ‘D’ to calmly pass past the on rushing keeper for Ingham to cooly slot home a deserved equaliser. A few short corners too finish the half for Norwich but no success. Mid way through the second half a successful short corner routine from City took them into the lead. A low ball from Cooke allowed Wardle to deflect past the keeper and into the net. 2-1 Norwich. Sadly the lead didn’t remain with East London fortunately having their on rushing player use his handle to knock the ball over the line following the goal mouth melee. A third soon followed with City unable to clear following a short corner and a good finish at the back post made it 3-2. With city pushing forward chances were going to be created at both ends. Cameron Cooke unfortunate to see his efforts sail over the bar. A final short corner saw East London score again within the final two minutes with game finishing 4-2 to East London.

The somewhat relaxed approach adopted by the hosts in terms of positioning and style of play saw them 4-0 down at half time. To be fair the county played well and scored some cracking goals the highlight a blistering shot from our own Rocco Iaccarino. A swift half time team talk that celebrated our generosity and achievement of the primary aim of giving the county confidence. However there’s only so much ‘welcoming’ the team were willing to give. A reshuffle with players playing in more ‘normal’ positions and we were in business. Monty Platt playing as a high forward terrorised the county side with his running on and off the ball coupled with great decision making in the D meant at the end of the third quarter we were 5-4 up. The final quarter saw the home side’s quality ooze on every tuft of astro to score three more goals. Sam Hyatt finishing with 4, with a brace apiece for Tom Ling (why did I let him play up front?) and Joseph Roy. An excellent game played in an excellent spirit. It was also great to see so many City youngsters shine for the county (Rocco and Rio Iaccarino, Alex Tomkinson, Krishna Patel, Rafe Lochore, Toby Pallister, Ethan Rushton and Jonty Black). Monty Platt was named man of the match for City.

Knowing one point would put us above Bury St Edmunds and out of the drop zone. We went up one nil with an excellent strike from Nathan Taylor beating the keeper. However Dragons came back scoring minutes before half time. After the break we came out on the attack taking the game to dragons. But our defensive marking was poor and they soon broke through scoring from the five. We then poured forwards trying to find an equaliser and started to dominate the game. However Dragons hit us on the counter attack to put the game to bed.

MENS MASTERS XI - 12/01/2020 VS CAMBRIDGE CITY O40S (A) TEAM: Mens Masters XI DATE: 12/01/2020 FIXTURE: Mens Masters XI VS 12/01/2020 HEADLINE: City Men's Masters O40s win convincingly away at Cambridge City LEAGUE: England Hockey O40s Tier 2 Cup VENUE: Cambridge City RESULT: CAMBRIDGE CITY 0 - NORWICH CITY 4 REPORT: An experienced, yet unfamiliar side took to the pitches of Cambridge on Sunday afternoon for the third round of the National Over 40s cup. Dynamically led by Matt Brine, the team started strongly, although couldn’t break through a stubborn Cambridge defence in the first half. Newly internationally selected Pete Morgan was lively as ever, but the chances didn’t quite drop for us. 0-0 at half time. Norwich dominated the second half. A sneaky opener by Pete was followed up by a coolly converted penalty flick by Nick Hooper. The third goal was the pick of the lot. A sweeping, pitch length move was stylishly finished by Richard Silvester. Matt Brine made sure of the result with a bullet short corner strike, Iain Martin was doing his emails in an untroubled D area and the team now confidently move onto round 4. Good to see the club able to field two Headmasters in the same team, indeed, same midfield! Player of the Match and Report by Jon Perriss Next Round is Sunday 9th February away at Chelmsford
