W (3-2) 11/11/2018 - W1 vs Wapping (A / EH WT1 2) COMEBACK QUEENS |
---|
WOMENS 1ST XI - 11/11/2018 VS WAPPING (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 11/11/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 11/11/2018 HEADLINE: Comeback Queens LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: Lee Valley RESULT: 3-2 REPORT: On a sunny Sunday afternoon, Norwich City Womens 1s travelled to Lee Valley to play against Wapping in their first round of the Cup. Since City started a new season in a new league, they were also promoted to Tier One. Knowing this could be a tough round, Norwich went into the game positive and relaxed and also very eager to play on the Olympic pitch (in the wise words of Georgia Cleveland: we did it for the gram). Norwich were slow out of the blocks in the first half but with great saves from Mikayla-Mae ‘bleed yellow’ Glover, City managed to keep attacking shots away. Many defensive short corners relied on solid defending from Fong Chung, Leigh-Ann Worrall, Harriet Johnson and Jocasta Staines. Despite the relentless defending, city conceded a penalty stroke from a messy tackle, with the opposition slotting the ball neatly into the left side net. Wonderful distribution from midfielders Rachel Mayne and Georgia Cleveland gave City a few chances at goal, however great saves from Wapping's keeper kept the score at 0-1 until half time. City realised they had a better chance at winning this than they first thought and were raring to go out strong and fighting in the second half. End to end play required maximum effort from the entire team and despite the strong defending, a well rehearsed short corner from Wapping found them their second goal, but city still weren’t giving up. City’s forwards worked relentlessly to press Wapping’s defenders and great pick ups from Irene Martinez created promising chances for City. A textbook chain of passing led to City’s first goal from Krystal Bishop with a strong strike into the corner of the goal. Quick free hits from City saw off two of Wapping's players with yellow cards (we won’t mention Ellie Brine’s green card in the first half for the same thing). City knew they were on the comeback and channeled their positivity while Wapping began to panic. Distasteful chat from the opposition coach spurred city on to prove they deserved the win, and fab play upfront from Olivia Williams won city a short corner. A strike from Ellie Brine saw the ball into the corner of the goal and City had equalised 2-2. City spirits were even higher and they continued battling for the win. Further fantastic runs from Emily Francis and Milly Brown on the wings created more opportunities for city and finally with a slick ball through to Krystal Bishop, she ran the by line and took a shot from a tight angle that only Krystal could score from and smashed the ball past the keeper into the corner. With only 5 minutes left, Wapping pressed hard but city worked even harder. Desperate to find something, the opposition swapped to a kicking back, however City still managed to keep the attackers away until the final whistle, end result 3-2. Great determination until the very end and fantastic teamwork from all. POM Ellie Brine.

With on goal chances for Olivia Williams, Krystal Bishop, Emily Francis, Sophie Mullan and Ellie Brine who held the forward line, Broxbourne defence remained strong. Winning a second short corner, Broxbourne secured a 2-0 lead in the second half despite some excellent defending from City's centre back Fong Chung and right half Harriet Johnson. L (3-5) 10/11/2018 - W2 vs UEA Women 1 (A / L) A STRONG TEAM SPIRIT |
---|
WOMENS 2ND XI - 10/11/2018 VS UEA WOMEN 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 10/11/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 10/11/2018 HEADLINE: A strong team spirit LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: UEA RESULT: lost 5-3 Norwich city 2s saw them selves at UEA grounds this Saturday. A young and ‘fresh’ team to take on. We were positive and ready to play some good hockey, which we did! City attacked hard,as UEA had the first push back, and city pressured the opposition. Once we stole the ball off UEA, city were passing the ball around the back fast and strong. The midfield were working hard to break up the screen of blue to break through for a full yellow attack! First goal for city and first of the game was a strong effect from Lucy Tilbrook, pushing her way through the defence and Milly Brown giving the ball a final push, making sure the goal was made! Forwards working hard, keeping the UEA defence on their toes. But UEA were a good team who pulled out two goals. But city came fighting back with another goal from a SUPER short corner sweep from Helen Busfield. Making half time 2-2. Second half found the teams fighting hard once again but unfortunately city started to tire as the opposition sent out their fresh legged subs. This resulted in another UEA goal giving them the lead. Once again city pushed and a fabulous, well practiced, goal came from a huge team effect. The ball was worked from the back line, all the way through to Hannah Jarvis POM, linking with Frankie Birkenhead, who strikes the ball across the D to the far right post, where speedy milly ran to defect then ball into the back of the goal. After a brilliant effect from the whole city team this was not enough as UEA were just that little fast and stronger this time to then add two more goals to make the final score 5-3 to UEA. Norwich will of course come back stronger and faster next time when we play them on our home pitch.

WOMENS 3RD XI - 10/11/2018 VS DEREHAM 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 10/11/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 10/11/2018 HEADLINE: Seven consecutive wins LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham (h) RESULT: 6-0 (w) REPORT: Norwich City Women's 3s hosted Dereham 3s on Saturday and continued an impressive seven-game winning streak. A dominant display ensured that a win was never in doubt, as City attempted to make up ground on the league leaders, Broadland Women's 1s. From pushback, City had control and launched wave after wave of attack. Player of the match Kate Houldey opened the scoring with a push to the corner of the goal, which crept in beside the keeper's foot. The run continued with goals from Sasha Ferreira and Jennifer Stanghan, who both managed to beat the keeper with effective shots. The last goal of the first half came from a short corner. After an accurate injection from Olivia Greenway, Ellie Hobden slapped the ball to the right post, where Holly Robinson was waiting to perfectly execute a deflection into the top of the net. In the second half, the rate of goal scoring slowed, due to a stronger Dereham defensive performance. But the visitors couldn’t prevent two further goals. Niamh Campbell scored a powerful backstick shot from the top of the D, and Olivia Greenway converted her second, and the final, goal of the game, making it 6-0 to City.

W (4-3) 10/11/2018 - M1 vs Letchworth 1 (A / L) NORWICH SEAL THEIR FIRST WIN IN THE SEASON |
---|
MENS 1ST XI - 10/11/2018 VS LETCHWORTH 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 10/11/2018 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 10/11/2018 HEADLINE: Norwich seal their first win in the season LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: Letchworth Hockey Club RESULT: 4-3 REPORT: This week the 1st XI went away to Letchworth following a tough string of fixtures. The pressure for a result was building and a game against a team near the bottom of the table proved to be the perfect opportunity to bring home the first win of the season The match was fiercely contested from the start with both teams creating early chances, but it was City who took the lead: a neat passing move was finished when Chris Wardale fired the ball into the bottom corner from close range 1-0 City. The opposition rallied but some astute defending and a quickly taken counter attacking aerial to Stuart Wardle who proceeded to body feint the keeper, two centre-backs and then the keeper again before passing into an empty net to double the lead (Classic Stu). Feeling a little left out Thomas Cooke decided he wanted in on the goal scoring action, however, his exquisite near post deflection came at the wrong end of the pitch. An own goal courtesy of some Letchworth crash ball hockey 2-1. Half Time 2-1 to City City struggled through the early stages of the second half, Letchworth battled their way back into the game and capitalised on their chances scoring first in open play and then from a short corner 2-2. Tense. City then lost the lead after Luke Corden, known for his physical play, brutishly tripped an opposition forward who was through on goal, got himself a 2-minute rest for his troubles. Letchworth upgraded their penalty corner to a flick which was they put away to give them the lead. Norwich found a second wind and set out with strong attacking intent to save the game. It didn’t take long before City’s top scorer Cameron Cooke found himself back post unmarked to level the scores once again. City pushed on desperate for a winner, firmly in the driving seat. With little time remaining what can only be described as a miracle goal from Luke Corden won City the game. A near post deflection threaded through the Letchworth defence by Cookie Senior. It proved to be the last touch of the game giving them a 4-3 win, amplifying the celebrations and confirming City’s first win of the season. Next week City will be looking to extend their good run of form when they welcome local rivals Harleston Magpies in what will hopefully be a close encounter.

D (3-3) 10/11/2018 - M2 vs Upminster 1 (H / L) CITY MISS OUT IN 3 ALL THRILLER |
---|
MENS 2ND XI - 10/11/2018 VS UPMINSTER 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 10/11/2018 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 10/11/2018 HEADLINE: City Miss Out In 3 All Thriller LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 VENUE: TRF RESULT: 3-3 DRAW REPORT: City’s Mens 2s played well in a thrilling home tie against Upminster, but their hopes of a win were ultimately thwarted by a late Upminster goal. City started slowly against Upminster on a bright afternoon at Taverham and very quickly found themselves two goals down. The first was from a short corner where Upminster rocketed a drag flick into the top right hand side of the net, leaving keeper Ben Millett with no chance. Shortly after, Upminster broke at speed down the right wing and smashed a bouncing ball across the D which their centre forward somehow deflected into the goal. City then began to play, stringing passes together to stretch Upminster and having the bulk of the play. City’s first goal came from a short corner, with the ball coming out to skipper Tom Hindle on the left, who stuck the ball sweetly past the keeper and against the back board. 2-1 down at half time, City felt that they were still in the game and continued to up the intensity. City’s pressure paid off, with Chris Perry’s drag flick from a short corner evading the keeper for the equaliser. As players got tired, discipline deteriorated and City suffered a couple of yellow cards. But still City pressed, narrowly failing to convert a couple of chances. Eventually City took the lead when Harry Paterson intercepted a clearance, drew two players and slipped the ball to the unmarked Mark Fletcher who slapped the ball home. City looked secure at 3-2 up, when Upminster struck back with a breakaway goal, much to City’s frustration. City continued to press, but with no luck. All in all, it was a good effort from City 2s which should have ended with a win. Man of the match went to Harry Paterson who covered loads of ground and caused the opposition all sorts of trouble around the D.

MENS 3RD XI - 10/11/2018 VS CAMBRIDGE SOUTH 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 10/11/2018 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 10/11/2018 HEADLINE: A brilliant battle in the sun earns City a point! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: TRF RESULT: 4-4 Draw REPORT: Facing a 2nd in the table team when you are bottom of the table is never going to be easy. However, the difference in positions in the table was not apparent in the first 10 minutes when City put the pressure on Cambridge and came close to taking the lead. Cambridge then settled into the game and starting to put together some well-worked attacks together to probe the City defence. Jim Pallister and Adam Sayer held the back line, whilst Sam Clabon and Elliott Fox provided outlets down the side. It was City who struck first when Dan Cheesman put a ball into the Cambridge goal, however the lead was short lived as Cambridge soon counter attacked and the scores were level again. A wonder goal from Murray Breetske gave City an equaliser after Cambridge had taken the lead, and another goal came for Rees Leonard from a short corner to once again draw the teams level at half time 3-3. City had played a great half and were keen to repeat their efforts in the second half. Hard work in midfield from Tom Ling, Lloyd Sayer, Paul Roy, Ben Withers and Willem Wabiaut kept the City attacks up and another goal came for Rees Leonard from an expertly placed short corner drag. The forwards kept putting pressure on the Cambridge defence with Will Kidner and Breetske coming close to taking the lead even further. A very close chance came Willem missed what can only be called a "golden opportunity" which would have killed the game for sure. A misplaced pass caused Tom ling to double his efforts in his tackling, leading him to have a rest at the side of the pitch. Cambridge didn't give up and they were rewarded with a goal which resulted from a very fortunate bounce of the ball and a sweet strike which knocked it past City keeper Luke Elwes. The game finished a 4-4 draw with City pleased to take the point away, but also thinking what could have been. A fantastic team performance against a strong opposition and a hope of things to come! Man of Match: Murray Breetske - International wonder goal TYFC: Tom Ling - seeing yellow!

MENS 4TH XI - 10/11/2018 VS I-ES 4 (A) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 10/11/2018 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 10/11/2018 HEADLINE: Suffolk Sob Story LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: Ipswich School Sports Centre RESULT: Lost 2-1 REPORT: In spite of playing away at probably the best hockey venue in Ease Anglia, City's M4's were not able to do justice to their surroundings! Right from the first whistle City seemed leggy and happy to surrender possession far too easily, and with only a makeshift 12 players it would prove to be a difficult day. Were it not for Man of the Match Eddie Darley in City's goal, the scoreline would have been much worse than the 1-0 at halftime City rallied after the break and their efforts were soon rewarded when great skill and a reverse pass into the 'D' from Jack Luther which left Jonty Black to slot home from close range Ill discipline from Simon Black & Cameron Husband allowed the constant IES pressure to tell late in the game. The unfortunate Darley in goal only deflected a shot high into the goal area and Captain Ingham was unable to stop it from crossing the line Final Score 2-1 to Ipswich & East Suffolk 4's Man of the Match: Eddie Darley

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham H20 RESULT: 4-0 Win REPORT: With Dragons missing a keeper at the start it was crucial that City made the early break through and they did just that with Joe Holden scoring his usual flukey goal. One became two in the first half as Pies converted a penalty stroke. City then ran riot a little bit as a further goal from Pies and another PC goal from the inform James Hughes made it 4-0 at the break. A reorganised and much more determined Dragons came out in the 2nd half and made it much tougher for City; both teams did still create chances however but both goalkeepers were on form as City's first half heroics were enough to seal a comprehensive win. Next week the interclub derby, fun!

MENS DEVELOPMENT XI - 10/11/2018 VS WATTON (A) TEAM: Mens Development XI DATE: 10/11/2018 FIXTURE: Mens Development XI VS 10/11/2018 HEADLINE: Watton lose power to a purposeful City LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Watton RESULT: 7-0 Win REPORT: With Remembrance day tomorrow it would be cheap to use the armistice as a cover for good journalism (or having any ideas at all - so the temptation is great) but of course it is difficult to think past Sidney Lewis the 12 year old (N.B. average age of our devs.) who volunteered in 1918 to join the army and gain access to action at the front in the First World War. Mercifully - and this is not without connection to Sidney’s efforts - we have much to be grateful for in the current era; enjoying our sport under a liberal, prosperous democracy. So for those players today who spared nothing on the pitch and there were many of you who did, spare a few thoughts on the 11th at 11am, for Sidney and his like and what their sacrifice enabled us to enjoy.
