L (0-1) 05/10/2019 - W1 vs Cambridge City 2 (H / L) |
---|
WOMENS 1ST XI - 05/10/2019 VS CAMBRIDGE CITY 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: TRF RESULT: 0-1 REPORT: After an exciting warm up sprinting race led by Harriet Johnson (winners were Fongy, Rachael Phillips and Ellie Brine), Norwich 1s were raring to go. Even though they knew that they lost 5-1 to this strong Cambridge side before, they didn’t let this stop them. The first half saw Norwich dominating and on top with multiple circle entries from Emily Francis and a very close 1v1 from Krystal Bishop and the Cambridge goal keeper. Despite the creative hockey Norwich were playing, combined with the intensity brought about by the use of 5 subs, they were unable to convert a goal. Unfortunately, Cambridge were able to sneak a goal past goalie Micayla after a small defending error from Norwich. Although at half time Norwich were losing 1-0, this didn’t phase them. After a positive half-time team talk, Norwich 1s were determined to carry on their possessional styled hockey. High pressing from Norwich as a unit put Cambridge under lots of pressure which enabled them to gain more confidence. Despite keeping up the brilliant attacking hockey, Norwich were still not able to get back a goal. Final score was 1-0 to Cambridge.

D (1-1) 05/10/2019 - W2 vs Broadland 1 (A / L) IT'S NOT OVER UNTIL THE FINAL WHISTLE!! |
---|
WOMENS 2ND XI - 05/10/2019 VS BROADLAND 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: It's not over until the final whistle!! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-1 Feeling confident from a good league start, the team travelled away to play local rivals Broadland at Taverham! City had a good strong squad with both youth and experience combining to make our team a force to be reckoned with and today was no different! The team felt confident and after a pre-match talk by our coach, Tapin, we ventured onto the pitch. The squad had a good warm up, taken by Frankie, who is taking her responsibility of warming the team up quite seriously. Our warm up was good compared to our rivals who took a totally different approach and didn’t warm up. City, took advantage of this from the start and dominated most of the match with our youth, Niamh Campbell, Ellie Hobden, Kate Houdey and Rosie Ringer and our experienced players, Rosie Humphrey, Milly Brown and Emma Hewitt keeping Broadland on their toes. City had many opportunities from open play and short corners to score, Rosie Humphrey coming the closest when she stole the ball from under the Broadland GK’s feet and nearly scoring. Although we dominated a lot of the match - it just wasn’t our day in front of the goal. The defence of Karren Dagless, Leigh-Ann Worrall, Sally Rose, Ellyn Roberts (making a guest appearance) Sophie Turner and Frankie Birkenhead were strong and worked well together to keep the Broadland forwards from causing us any real trouble. Broadland were pushing hard to score and on one occasion in the first half, after some preventative intervention from City's Sophie Turner in goal, thought they had scored a great goal when one of their players, from the top of the circle shot for goal which saw the ball heading into the top right-hand corner of City’s goal. Broadland were about to celebrate, the umpires were about to give the goal, but no-one told City’s defence who said “not today” and Karren Dagless, from no-where got her stick to the ball and made a great goal-line clearance over the bar much to the crowd’s delight. Late in the second half, City conceded a short corner and moments later we were 1-0 down which was definitely against the run of play. Most teams would have given up but with only five minutes to go City, with their resilience and skill pushed forward with urgency. With elbows flying City kept fighting to the end and much to the delight of the bench and City players, Rosie Ringer, with less than thirty seconds remaining, scored a wonder goal from the edge of the circle into the top side of the net to deny Broadland the win. Player of the Match – Karren Dagless Scorer – Rosie Ringer

D (0-0) 05/10/2019 - W3 vs Evergreens 1 (H / L) HARD FOUGHT DRAW |
---|
WOMENS 3RD XI - 05/10/2019 VS EVERGREENS 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: Hard fought draw LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham (home) RESULT: 0-0 (draw) REPORT: City 3s headed into their match against Evergreens with a strong team on a bright Saturday morning, feeling confident about their chances. It was a tough game, but a great show of hockey as the home team dominated play. The ball saw very little of City's defending end, with a number of opportunities on goal for the hosts. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert these chances due to a strong defence in the D from Evergreens. The match ended with neither side scoring a goal, but a very good performance from City and their promising squad going into the season.

W (4-0) 05/10/2019 - W5 vs East Coast 3 (H / L) GREAT TEAM WORK! |

WOMENS 5TH XI - 05/10/2019 VS EAST COAST 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: Great Team Work! LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 1 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 4-0 REPORT: With the rain staying at bay the NCHC W5s great team effort resulted in a 4-0 win in against East Coast 3. The first half saw both teams working hard. NCHC had some great runs on the wings by Lucy McNarry, Amy Hinchchliffe LW which meant we had a few attempts at goal. We scored our first goal before half time with a good goal from Sharon Philips after lots of team work to switch the play helped by Olivia Broadway. The second half the team were in full flow with great passes. East Coast had some great breaks and our defence held them off with our GK Zara Hunter ensuring nothing got past her. Lucy McNarry scored a great goal from a run down the wing, Sharon Phillips followed that shortly with another goal tapped in. In the last few minutes of play Olivia Broadway hit a great ball into the D which was deflected beautifully by Lucy McNarry to get our 4th goal. A great game of team work and against a nice team to play.

L (1-4) 05/10/2019 - W6 vs Breckland 1 (A / L) CITY HAD TO PLAY WITHOUT A KEEPER |
---|
WOMENS 6TH XI - 05/10/2019 VS BRECKLAND 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 6th XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 6th XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: City had to play without a keeper LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 2 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Thetford RESULT: 4-1 REPORT: Forced to play without a keeper due to lack of availability across the club today, this match was a struggle for City 6s – who were pleased to keep the goal tally relatively respectable in the challenging circumstances. It wasn’t a happy game. Breckland were strong on the ball and a challenge for Norwich once in the D with no keeper. However, what Norwich felt were unprovoked, unsporting comments and behaviour from the hosts, made the whole match rather more unpleasant in tone than it needed to be. Captain and player of the match Rose Byrne stayed incredibly calm and the whole team followed her lead, guessing this may just be the way the hosts roll in their team vibe. City responded to the tough atmosphere by upping their work rate on the pitch rather than getting angry. City had plenty of penetration into the home team’s D, but couldn’t find the net as much as they needed. Three goals went in, during the first half. However, City let just one in during the second half and scored a goal back, thanks to the cool-headed skill of Josine Van Den Berg. The midfielder intercepted a clearance ball from Breckland and carefully slotted it into the net.

L (0-3) 05/10/2019 - W7 vs Harleston Magpies 7 (A / L) UNLUCKY DEFEAT FOR CITY 7'S |

WOMENS 7TH XI - 05/10/2019 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 7 (A) TEAM: Womens 7th XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Womens 7th XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: Unlucky Defeat for City 7's LEAGUE: NORFOLK LEAGUE DIVISION 3 LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Harleston Magpies (A) RESULT: 3-0 Loss REPORT: City W7's suffered a 3-0 loss to Magpies 7's but the score did not reflect the balance of play. The first half was fairly even with City enjoying some good passing and forays, particularly down the flanks. One attack resulted in a rare penalty flick, which despite a good effort, wasn't converted. In the second half more good City interplay resulted in the 7's dominating possession in the early stages having several consecutive penalty corners. However, stout defending from Magpies, with some fresher legs, put away their chances clinically. Despite the loss the 7's were pleased with the quality of their performance and have more positive progress to build from. POTM was Emily Winter.

MENS 3RD XI - 05/10/2019 VS IPSWICH EAST SUFFOLK 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: Thank you for clubbing together LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: Ipswich School RESULT: 1-6 REPORT: It was a slightly mixed and depleted city team that took the trip to Ipswich this weekend with two, yes two, keepers to face IES. City started strong with good ball retention and movement. However a series of uncharacteristic errors led to two opportunistic goals from a clinical IES side. Having lost Will Riddleston to injury/Ipswich foul play we then had a fraught rest of the half and managed to prevent any more goals. The second half saw first half goalkeeper Luke lose the pads and don some borrowed shin pads for a spirited run in the front line , credit where credit’s due he did cause a nuisance of himself. Two more clinical IES goals saw their lead stretch until a late consolation dragflick from Rees Leonard prompted a resurgence from city. However this was soon put to bed as IES soon scored two more. A courageous performance by city given the circumstances and we’ll live to fight another day. Final score: 1-6 Man of the match: Alex Tomkinson

L (2-3) 05/10/2019 - M4 vs Ipswich East Suffolk 3 (H / L) CITY TAKE POSITIVES FROM CLOSE DEFEAT |

MENS 4TH XI - 05/10/2019 VS IPSWICH EAST SUFFOLK 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: City take positives from close defeat LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: NCHC 4's 2 - £ IES 3's REPORT: City 4’s wanted to put the previous week behind them and start against Ipswich and East Suffolk 3’s with a positive attitude and confident game play. From the start it was obvious that IES wanted to play the long ball through the middle and place pressure directly onto the City defence. City held firm after some early pressure and with a few saves from the keeper City managed to start to work forward and create attacking chances which led to the first goal scored by Joe Konieczny. IES then started to create more and more chances which were scuppered by a well oiled defence of Jag and Frosty but in the end the constant pressure paid off for IES with a cruel deflection past the City keeper to make it 1-1. City worked hard to try and gel together through playing attacking hockey and making the most of the limited chances they could get due to a solid IES defence picking off the attack’s or just missed shots going wide. The limited chances unfortunately went against City and the pressure continued towards the City midfield and defence which led to IES second goal which was scored through an unlucky mishap in the defensive area and jumped on by their striker 1-2. After a good half time team talk it was clear that our aim was to strengthen the midfield due to an overload from IES in this area and work on simple effective hockey, which is what happened as City worked hard to get the ball moving and push for an equaliser. Unfortunately IES got a penalty corner and after it broke down they managed to get a shot on goal that lacked speed but not accuracy and went inside the right post leaving a very annoyed City keeper 1-3. City spurred on by this really started to play their best hockey of the game placing IES under continued pressure and yet only working with limited chances but doing the best they could considering and winning a penalty corner which led to City’s second goal via Mr Circuit 2-3. Leading on from City’s second goal it was clear that an equaliser was on the cards as they pushed relentlessly through the last quarter of the game trying their best to get that needed goal but to no avail as IES held on to win 2-3. Even though it was a loss City should take a positive attitude into the next game.

D (3-3) 05/10/2019 - MD vs Norwich Dragons A (A / L) DUSTY HARE(S) |

MENS DEVELOPMENT XI - 05/10/2019 VS NORWICH DRAGONS A (A) TEAM: Mens Development XI DATE: 05/10/2019 FIXTURE: Mens Development XI VS 05/10/2019 HEADLINE: Dusty Hare(s) LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Dragons RESULT: 3-3 draw REPORT: With a bare eleven available for the am match slot being whittled to 9 by Rugby (of all things!) the aged sub bench might have wished they too could be watching from some sports bar and reminiscing about victories past rather than being forced to recreate them as “brand new” fullbacks. However, I think it fair to say everyone had a really good day out. The forwards demonstrated good skills and created lots of chances being in good positions, packing the 5 in the oppo D and the tackling and interceptions from the half backs was very solid and saved the midfield some extra work as we struggled with turnover ball - partly because the midfield tended at times to play a bit wide and a bit high and at other times because we allowed the oppo to get side on rather than forcing them to gamble on the pass through or force them turn them back. Whilst there were some things to work on we can definitely celebrate our passing game, playing our trademark composed and selfless style. Credit to Dragons too, they played with good tempo in attack and grew in confidence as the game drew on, pressing forward as our legs, perhaps, tired. This was our sternest test yet and it turned into one of the most enjoyable games to have watched or played in, leaving it as we did, with everything on the pitch with maybe even a few of our own dusty hairs. FYI Dusty Hare (as everyone knows) was one of the great inspirational fullbacks of English rugby, mercurial and composed even in the twilight of his long career, illuminating, if you will, the great sporting journey we can all still have ahead of us: "if you reach for the stars, you might touch the sky." Look forward to training on Tuesday where Tom will no doubt have new challenges, we have East Coast next Saturday followed by a break...
