WOMENS 1ST XI - 05/03/2022 VS BISHOP STORTFORD 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 05/03/2022 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 05/03/2022 HEADLINE: TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH FOR CITY 1S LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION VENUE: TRF RESULT: 2-4 REPORT: City faced a top of the table clash with promotion to National League on the cards. We were out of the blocks early and within the first five minutes a great interception from Niamh Campbell and a quick ball to Stacey Lee led to Lee turning the defender and reverse smashing it into the net. Great saves from Summer Haylock helped City keep their lead but they were starting to weaken. Stortford capitalised on this and found themselves too often in our D but the pressure of Lucy Walton, Hannah Jarvis and Hannah Nunn kept them at bay. A few minutes to half time and Stortford managed to work the ball around City’s defence to sneak one in. City were determined to start the second half stronger, Pui Foung Chung, Lucy Tilbrook and Felicity Williams fought hard to win and distribute the ball, Olivia Williams and Krystal Bishop made great leads upfront but unfortunately little chances were created. A well drilled short corner from Bishops Stortford saw them take the lead. 2 minutes later a quick turn over from Stortford found an unmarked player on the far post, 3-1. City’s heads dropped and yet another 2 minutes later a rebounded short corner found the net, 4-1. City knew this wasn’t over, screwed their heads back on and came back fighting. Hanna Hall and Ellie Brine fought tirelessly in the middle and City won a short corner. A practiced routine led to a deflected ball and a mid-air shot from Lucy Tilbrook found the net. At 4-2 City still had a lot to do. A few more short corners won and chances created but City couldn’t convert. Final score 4-2.

WOMENS 2ND XI - 05/03/2022 VS COLCHESTER 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 05/03/2022 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 05/03/2022 HEADLINE: Promotion Party in the making LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH EAST VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: With a late game at Ipswich we were all ready to get the game going with a couple of delays. We were raring to go and in our first five minutes we were completely dominating with a quick run from Sophie B we all thought a repeat of her East Coast game was going to happen, unfortunately the keeper saved. With Colchester applying a very high press witch we weren’t used to we panic and started to lower ourselves to their level. Colchester were quick on the attack and won a short corner, in this case the umpire made a controversial decision to give a flick. Georgina went the right way and got her pad to it but the power still went in.This was an unfamiliar situation for City as we had only been done 3 times this season! Quickly after the grit and determination of City Emma H was on a mission shot at the keeper and got the deflection and smashed it in from close range. Half-time came and a brilliant talk from Emily F got us raring today and reminded us what our goals are and our Number 1 Supporter (Rosie) gave us the energy we needed. Our start to the second half we had majority of possession we got another controversial decision and the umpire awarded a short corner from a misunderstood foot of the other team and we went 2-1 down. The defence of Leigh-Ann, Sally and Dani kept Colchester Quite. Another short was awarded to Colchester due to to Dani S’ “best tackle of my hockey life” and luckily Georgina was on flying form and denied. A lovely run from debutant Hollie slipped it to Grace who scored 2-2!!!! Millie Brown was relentless in the middle and won ball and passed it to Hollie who then slotted the goal in 3-2!!!! After a hard battled game the team bond quickly showed and working for each other under high pressure we kept our 100% winning record going.

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST NORTH VENUE: TRF RESULT: WON 4-2 REPORT: City went into the game knowing they were going to be in for a tough battle without their usual squad. A strong team talk before the match began by Captain Claire Snelling led the team to start as they were meant to go on. Strong passes from the back led to Emma Richardson passing the ball to the right-wing with Emily Greenway driving the ball up into the attacking D, a strong sharp pass to Captain Claire Snelling led to a reverse shot and the first City goal. Morale was high going forward and another goal set up from short sharp passes, communication, and team play led to Emma Richardson dominating the central area and finding Ellie Alderton who passed it to Marie Hood who slotted it into the back of the net leading City to being 2 - 0 up. With high morale and spirits, City managed to attack as a team. City were euphoric however Broadlands came back fighting and changed the score line to 3 - 1. Strong defending from Jenny Brine and Gillian Allen kept City at on the same score line for a short period of time. However, Broadland were determined and managed to sneak another into the goal making the score line 3-2. With dampened spirits, City came back fighting, Emma Richardson sprinted from one end of the pitch to another in hope of putting another past Broadland however their strong defense and goalkeeping stopped that from happening. Some substitutions happened and City kept up their determination. Strong passes between the team and good communication led to Caroline Illing getting their fourth goal. Ending the first half winning 4-2. A strong team talk from Gabby Sharp left to the team starting the second half fighting. City came together with sheer determination starting the second half however so did Broadlands leading to no goals in either end with the final score being 4-2 to City.

W (4-3) 05/03/2022 - W5 vs Dereham 4 (A / L) WELL DESERVED WIN |
---|
WOMENS 5TH XI - 05/03/2022 VS DEREHAM 4 (A) TEAM: Womens 5th XI DATE: 05/03/2022 FIXTURE: Womens 5th XI VS 05/03/2022 HEADLINE: Well deserved win LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST NORTH VENUE:Dereham Hockey Club RESULT:4-3 W REPORT: City 6s were keen to get another win under the belt and continue the high intensity seen in recent matches. The weather was a bit miserable but we didn’t let it dampen our spirits as the whistle blew, as we knew how hard Captain Emma Guyton had worked to ensure we had a full squad for the game. We were quick to score our first goal after some impressive passing and triangle work from the attack, and our first goal was popped in by Millie Wimhurst after being pinged around the D with accurate precision. Sophie Bush was next to score with the calm composure of a master, slipping it by the goalie as if it was the easiest thing in the world. She scored another for City’s 3rd goal and Amy Hinchliff closed the 4th one with an assist from Tilly Hill. Although we were dominant in attack, our goalie Zara Hunter wasn’t let off easy, having a one on one situation with attacker which she closed down with an impressive slide and body block. Dereham got 3 goals in past defense, two of which came from a short corner to post strike making the last short corner before the end of game whistle particularly tense. City were not keen to allow a draw and closed the attacks down. Defender Allison McLellan applied great pressure on Dereham and even made some incredible runs down to attack and getting some shots on goal. Unfortunately however, 2 of these were disallowed. During the 2nd half tensions rose as one of our goals was about to be disallowed after it hit the back board but Millie Wimhurst used her immense umpiring knowledge to advocate for the team and ensure fairness in play and the goal was eventually given after some deliberation. We lost her to a green card for 2 minutes but were very impressed with her composure and knowledge of the game. Midfield played tirelessly, with great space awareness and rolling round to get past Dereham’s strong defense. POTM Emily Winter got back into her stride after a set back with a foot injury and made some classic Winnie runs dodging round the defenders and bringing the ball from D to D. She even managed a few successful passes due to amazing communication from the rest of the team. City were chuffed for the win, not allowing the disappointment of some disallowed goals to get us down. We are keen for another win next week with a solid squad.
