W (3-0) 03/12/2016 - W2 vs Norwich Dragons 4 (H / L) CITY 2'S TAKE HOME ANOTHER WIN BEFORE SEASON TURNAROUND |

LADIES 2ND XI - 03/12/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 4 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: City 2's take home another win before season turnaround LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: Won 3-0 REPORT: It was time for the final game of the first half of the season before we take on our 3rd team in the reverse fixture next weekend. We hosted Dragons 4’s at Taverham on a balmy December morning! With only 12 we knew it was going to be a tough and tiring game particularly as many of the team weren’t feeling in tip top shape but we went out with fight from the start. The first half saw Dragons using their young players speed and determination to create a few opportunities yet our defence remained strong with Karren Dagless and Leigh Ann Worrall held the fort with only a handful of forays into our D. Annabelle Pheonix and Angela Hindle linked up well to create opportunities for the tirelessly running Milly Brown on the right wing that resulted in opportunities including a 1 on 1 with the keeper that unfortunately clipped the keepers pad. Another chance was created by Hannah Jarvis when she intercepted a Dragon’s cross and out skilled two defenders to find herself in the D, with a reverse sweep her effort went just centimetres wide. We spread the ball around nicely to change the points of attack, with some piercing runs on the left wing by Emily Francis creating more opportunities with Ellie Brine who was always in the right place to try to finish them off, unfortunately without reward due to some last ditch Dragons defending. A short corner provided the last opportunity of the first half when another speedy injection from Rosie Humphrey went to Kate Hartland who smashed the ball inches wide of the post. Following half time and an enthusiastic team talk from the Wardale duo City came out wanting it more and were duly rewarded with 3 goals. 2 of these goals were the result of Annabelle Pheonix who never gave up when tackling and drove towards the D with desire, the first finished swiftly and effortlessly put home by Ellie Brine when Annabelle smashed a ball into the D, the other was slotted past the keeper by Milly Brown. The final goal was courtesy of Kate Hartland who flicked the ball into the back of the net when great interlinking from Annabelle Pheonix and Emily Francis meant that the ball found Rosie Humphrey making a piercing run at the top of the D, it then fell after a save to Kate who converted. Another handful of opportunities arose with Rosie Humphrey and Ellie Brine creating triangles around Dragons defence and with Mollae Scott making a nuisance of herself for the defence with her skilful dribbling creating more chances on goal. Sadly one of these resulted in a ball to the cheek and a subsequent black eye – we hope it’s better soon Molls! Overall it was an eventful game, and considering we had a diminished team and were carrying two cases of Man Flu – it was a fantastic result!

LADIES 3RD XI - 03/12/2016 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 4 (A) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Harleston Magpies RESULT: 3-0 (W) REPORT: Captains across the club were faced with a task on their hands this week due to lack of player availability, however after much organising City 3’s headed to Harleston with a full squad containing a number of City 4s players , some of whom had already played a tough game earlier in the day. City started in their usual way and seemed to lack enthusiasm somewhat, the game was fairy evenly matched but Magpies did seem to have a slight edge and with some well drilled passing soon won a short corner. City defended well and Gemma Sargent was able to keep out any threats as she blocked the shot from the top of the D. The ball was up and down the pitch throughout the duration of the first half when Hannah Jarvis drove through the middle to find Hannah Bush in space at the top of the D where she struck the ball and cleanly planted it into the back board leaving the score 1-0 at half time. After a constructive team talk from Coach Matthew "Pies" Brine, City were out of the blocks on the whistle and keen to take home 3 points. The team seemed to step it up a notch and with some excellent passing around the back the ball was fed up to the forward line and dribbled into the D where Magpies fouled with a stick tackle and a short corner was awarded to City. Emily Spencer stepped up to the top of the D and took a straight strike firing the ball right into the corner of the goal. As Magpies seemed to tire City kept their heads and soon found themselves in the oppositions D once again, Caroline Illing received a good pass from Jenni Stanghan and firmly pushed the ball past the keeper only for it to be rebounded off the post and back out to her, she then slipped the ball to Emily Greenway on the left who popped it behind the keeper and into the goal leaving the final score 3-0 to City. Special mention and thank you to those who helped fill the gaps in our squad this week, POTM was awarded to Emily Spencer for her composure, accurate passing and fantastic goal!

LADIES 4TH XI - 03/12/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (A) TEAM: Womens 4th XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 4th XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: The Girl with the Pearl Earring .... LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE:Dragons Den RESULT:0-6 (Loss) REPORT: Match preparation was somewhat thwarted this week when as many will know, however early and prepared that you may be parking at the Dragon’s Den is a complete no no. You can circle that car park endlessly but no one ever reappears to claim their car, so you have no alternative but to park elsewhere! Not ever so convenient when you are the GK and lugging your kit for all it’s worth but Edie negotiated the busy roads with fortitude and duly arrived with the rest of the team who had also encountered the same parking nightmare. A quick team brief and warm up ensued and it was at this stage that Mrs T went walk about looking for parking solutions in the swimming pool area, no Sue, that elusive parking space just doesn’t exist! We entered the pitch with our compliment of 12 player’s and noted with delight that the Dragon’s 3’s team had clearly not had the same availability issues and had selected 14 of their strongest players, many of whom had most likely played at a much higher level. Self believe and team spirit were words banded about before the whistle and once blown they gave it to us in spades. In somewhat of a blur, 3 goals were scored and alas Ellyn Roberts took a nasty injury to her hand and took no further part in the game. Heather Tasker slotted into left midfield, like a pro and thoroughly deserved POTM this week. The fourth goal was hotly contested by Edie Mason when the Dragon’s player backed into her with force and the Dragon’s umpire, firstly gave the goal, then after consulting with the other Dragon’s umpire gave a 16, but then again reversed his decision to award Dragon’s the goal …. Confused? We certainly were but we knew it clearly wasn’t going to be our day! 4-0 down at half time and a strong motivational talk was needed. We came out of the blocks and produced some great passages of play and should be very proud of our performance. The one advantage of playing in this fixture was the amount of short corners that we unfortunately needed to defend, great practice and blimey towards the end we were very good. On one such encounter, Kim Lusher decided to remove her pearl earrings before wearing her face mask ….a great delaying technique and just ever so annoyed that I hadn’t thought of that one myself! To sum up - we certainly did believe and our team spirit is the best. Great character building for all the youngsters playing today and it must be noted that 7 out of the 12 players then went on to play in further fixtures after.

Luckily she got back on track and helped lead the team to another very convincing win: 20-0. This was a great team performance, with everyone playing a crucial part, but special thanks should go to Josine, Carey and Liz and to Sophia's Mum for enabling Sophia and Amelia to play for us then whisking them off for their school match! We also welcomed Rosie this week, a new player for the 5's who had a strong game. We definitely look forward to embracing her skilful play in future weeks. Roll on next week's game, a toughie against our 6's.! Man of match this week: Bev Cushion.

It was a comfortable win against Magpies, who before today’s game were yet to concede a goal this season. Eloisa Ford scored from close range for Norwich in the first quarter after a baseline run was netted after a few passes around in the D. Norwich had plenty more chances but failed to convert further attacks although they continued to have the best of the play. In the third quarter Magpies fought back and looked likely to score, but Norwich held them at bay with some strong defending and remarkable tackles and passes from player of the match Maddie Smith. With just seconds to go before the end of the third quarter Kate Houldey slapped a ball through several Magpies players to Abby Flatt in the D. Abby neatly slotted the ball to Frances Byrne who netted the ball behind the keeper.

MENS 3RD XI - 03/12/2016 VS CAMBRIDGE UNI 3 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: City lose by 1 goal again on the road LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: UNI HC RESULT: 2-3 Loss REPORT: City travelled to Cambridge for this very early start against a UNI Side, 10:30 we all seemed very early but we remembered this isn't UEA this is Cambridge #nerds Anyway the early start obviously didn't help captain Perry and as City could only muster 11 men, including a certain young man who didn't seem very stable in the car park! #fridaynightout The 3s despite their lack of numbers played well in the opening periods of the game but couldn't muster any clear cut chances, the defence of Higginbotham, Perry, Anthony and sometimes Ling kept UNI reasonable quiet. However the story of the 3s season is conceding goals from nothing really and once again this was on show as long hit into the box came of Millett before landing perfectly at their striker who finished well. Millett was then woken up and brought into two smart saves even giving us some breathing time by palming the ball over the fence. Then came a big moment the brilliant Cambridge umpires gave a not so brilliant PC which we scored but to correct their not so brilliant PC the decided to did allow the goal for not going outside the D que captain Perry and leader Pies, one umpire gives goal another doesn't, sort it out!!! 1-1 went back to 1-0. As City looked to hold on to 1-0 once again they shot themselves in the foot concedeing another scrappy goal just before the break (20 second if you like maths) 2-0 HT. After the break and a change of umpires but this one no better! City had hoped for better but poor ball retention didn't help as City struggled to penetrate the D and win those valuable PC's (Just so the umpires could disallow them!!!) Then out of no where BANG BANG BANG Silvy!!!! 2-1 Well it went in I guess, Silvy had a shot on the turn, the keeper saves, the defender tries to do a lingy move and tap the ball up before hitting it away and of course he taps it into his own goal. LOL What a nerd, 2-1, City on a roll.... ... Or are we straight up the other end Cambridge go applying pressure from the get go and they manage to score a PC 3-1. Calls for the ball not going outside the D went on death ears :( In the end City finally won another PC and Perry decided to drag if from the dotted line just to let the umpire know it went outside the D, 3-2 helluah!!! City pushed but couldn't find an equalising goal. O Well next time...

W (2-1) 03/12/2016 - M4 vs Bury St Edmunds (A / L) AGAINST ALL ODDS |

MENS 4TH XI - 03/12/2016 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS (A) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: Against All Odds LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: Culford School, Bury St Edmunds RESULT: Won 2-1 REPORT: City 4s travelled to Bury for a late afternoon game trying to better the 6-0 defeat on the opening game of the season against 3rd place Bury 1's. City started brightly after Leonard's long pass found Gallop in the 'D' who won a Penalty Corner, which Leonard dispatched to make it 1-0. Bury then upped the tempo of their play and soon won a Penalty Stroke, however Jewers was in defiant mood and saved the stroke high to his left. Bury though deserved their equalizer 5 mins later when City failed to clear a ball in the 'D' and left Jewers with no chance. 1-1 at half time and (in the words of JK) captain Ingham produced halftime team talk full of clichés to try and motivate the troops. In the 2nd half City were tested, it was fair to say that the thin ice we were standing on was beginning to crack. Jewers though was not in a giving mood and stood up to every shot and Penalty Corner, Bury were just not going to pass this afternoon. Ingham, W Kidner, Tomlinson, Duffy and Doncaster in particular were not giving up without a fight and while I may be a bit unkind to other players it's fair to say they put in the biggest of shifts. With 10 mins to go and Bury pressing very high up the pitch, another Leonard long ball found Doncaster who beat two players and who's cross found Gallop in the middle of an open goal to tap in for a 2-1 lead. Some more last ditch defending, a Duffy green card and even Bury taking their keeper off was the final act of a 2-1 win for the 4s. POTM was Rob Duffy

MENS 5TH XI - 03/12/2016 VS IPSWICH CRANES (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: Game of two halves LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: home RESULT: won 3-2 REPORT: This certainly was a game of two halves. City burst out of the blocks with a high tempo. Within minutes we had our first short corner of the game. With a scene close to the parting of the Red Sea, Geoff Spencer had all the time in world before hitting the side fence! Within minutes City were on the attack again with some neat interplay. Ralph Jackman set up Adie Land for the opening goal. City kept up the pressure with some exciting link play. With another short corner looming, Geoff made the most of generous defending to allow Adie Land to tap in his second goal. Adie Marr was a threat all afternoon as he took his opportunity to add a third goal for City. Clearly an inspirational team-talk from the captain did the trick during the break as a team in total control all of a sudden looked all over the place. Cranes took full advantage of some sloppy City play to get a foothold back in the game with two quick goals. City where then their own worst enemies coughing up possession too easily during the final ten minutes. Fortunately, some fine saves by Grocer and some excellent tackles from man of match, Al Paterson were enough to see the team over the line. 7th place at Christmas is not too bad - Newmarket 2s next!

MENS 7TH XI - 03/12/2016 VS NORTH NORFOLK 3 (A) TEAM: Mens 7th XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 7th XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: Hard to b(r)each LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: CROMER HIGH SCHOOL RESULT: NORTH NORFOLK 3 2 NORWICH CITY 7 0 REPORT: Despite looking desperately short of players early in the week a bare eleven was finally assembled on Saturday morning thanks to Simon Black releasing Cam Husband from the Boys Development Team. Thanks to Daryl Greig and Luke Keeley for changing their arrangements so that they could play. There was also a welcome appearance from Sam Matthews. Fears of a physical encounter were soon banished and a very enjoyable and friendly game ensued. Nomads had the lions share of possession and looked the likely to score, but found the full back pairing of Sam Matthews and Cam Husband along with keeper Paul Hewett difficult to breach. It wasn't until just before the break when City failed to clear the ball on three occasions that North Norfolk capitalised, taking a one goal lead into the break. City showed a little more attacking intent in the second half with Nathan Dixon just failing to thread the ball into the goal and Sam Matthews just missing with a drag flick. Dan Jeffers turned in a good performance in his first outing in midfield. It was only a matter of time before North Norfolk added to their tally and after missing several opportunities only managed to add one more. City will hope to pick up one or two more wins after the Christmas break.

L (2-7) 03/12/2016 - MD vs Harleston Magpies (H / L) CITY YOUNGSTERS TAUGHT A HOCKEY LESSON |

MENS DEVELOPMENT XI - 03/12/2016 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES (H) TEAM: Mens Development XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens Development XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: City youngsters taught a hockey lesson LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: NCHC 2-7 Magpies REPORT: Sadly this was a game where the City youngsters worked their socks off but were a bit like a sleek sports car whose cylinders were mis-firing. Not a great way to take on a very well drilled and skilful Magpies team! Magpies took the lead inside the first two minutes and were always the dominant team mixing quick and accurate passing with dynamic running and some excellent dribbling. City stuck to their task defending valiantly but were guilty of dribbling into trouble or delivering a wayward pass just when they looked to have some attacking options. Whilst his team mates collectively struggled to rediscover their own hockey mojo Freddie Paterson looked a threat every time he received the ball to give the home team a glimmer of hope. A long ball from Saverio Iaccarino just before half time allowed Paterson to beat his defender and slot the ball into the bottom corner to leave the score 1-3 at half time. What little hope of a City resurgence bouyed by the Paterson goal was soon snuffed out thanks to some simple and sometimes clinical hockey. The visitors' maturity in winning penalty corners was something the City team could learn from. Whilst the visitors continues to breach the City defence, and Coty goal it was a real credit to their character that they continued to compete for every ball to the end and it was fitting that Paterson should score with a calm reverse stick shot on the stroke of full time following a delightful pass on the run from Alex Tomkinson. Whilst the record will show Magpies won 7-2 it could have been much more had it not been for the keeping of Ethan Rushton. Freddie Paterson was named as City's man of the match.

MENS MASTERS XI - 04/12/2016 VS BRAINTREE O40 MASTERS (A) TEAM: Mens Masters XI DATE: 04/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens Masters XI VS 04/12/2016 HEADLINE: A bit of Morgan's Spice sees the Mens O40s Masters into the Last 16 of the EH Shield National Competition COMPETITION: ENGLAND HOCKEY O40 MENS MASTERS SHIELD COMPETITION VENUE: BRAINTREE, ESSEX RESULT: CITY 10, BRAINTREE 1 REPORT: Norwich City Mens O40s Master team are through the last 16 of the England Hockey Shield Competition after a straight forward victory away at Braintree in Essex. In a game that was very much dominated by Norwich City it was just a matter of how straight forward they could create chances without over complicating play and simply making the ball do the work with the immense amount of space that was being given to them. It did however take a few attempts for City to open the scoring, Matthew “Pies” Brine unfortunately lacking shooting practise by the look of things with shots going wide of the right and left post and forcing the occasional good save by the Braintree keeper, however one of Pete Morgan’s silky runs eventually found him on the base line and a drag across the face of goal found Ian Andrews poised to finish from close range (1-0 ahead). Another run by Pete Morgan, this time down the right, after some great work by Ali Wardale getting forward from right half, saw himself on the end of a deliberate obstruction of the defender and this gave Haren Patel the chance to surge forward from the back to slot away a penalty stroke (2-0). The third was created soon afterwards when a quick free hit opportunity was spotted by Steffan Griffiths, threading the ball through a gap for Matthew Brine to pick up on the top of the circle, this time looking more composed as he forced the keeper to commit before rounding him and slotting the ball into the net (3-0). The next goal fell to Haren Patel, a signature drag flick into the bottom corner from a straight forward short corner routine (4-0). The last falling for Peter Morgan, this time using his pace as one of the younger members of the squad to undo the Essex defence and slot away from close range (5-0). The half time whistle came and it was clear that this was going to be a one sided affair and that focus was to keep our shape, not concede a goal and to make the ball do the work as more and more space was becoming available for City to exploit. The second half continued as the first ended, City having all the possession and dominating the play with ease, lots of getting forward by the half backs and the midfield dominating the play with ease. The next goal fell to Peter Morgan, nicely worked move through midfield and firing home from close range (6-0). It wasn’t long before the goal tally continued, Matthew Brine slotting away his shot into the bottom corner after great work from Morgan in midfield, despite the defender stumbling as he tried to stick out his foot to stamp on the ball as it went over the line (7-0). Eventually it was Player of the Match Morgan’s opportunity to get his hat-trick, with a sell to the keeper and defence as they assumed he was going to pass the ball to an unmarked Brine on the left of the goal for an easy goal, he dropped his should and took the ball the other way to slot home with ease (8-0). The run of play was slightly changed when Braintree had a break away opportunity, the ball falling to their lone “beanie hat” striker whose shot was about to bounce off the pads of the oncoming sliding Masters debutant Malcolm Jewers in the City goal when team mate John “Frosty” Ingham put the most effective of deflections on the ball to see it loop over and into the City goal (8-1). A big cheer from the home side and a cry of “come on we can get some more goals back” seemed to have no impact on either team as from the restart City continued to control the play. A short corner variation found a trademark Jonathan “JK” Kidner opportunity, Matthew Brine picking out the gap through to just outside the right post (this time intentionally!) and JK running in to deflect it just in behind the keeper (9-0). The final goal came as the whistle was blown for the final short corner of the match, Jim Pallister having moments before it found himself with two clear striking opportunities from the top of the circle, one saved by the keeper and other saved by the back of JKs legs, but this time the first shot by Brine was saved and deflected back to the top of the circle where Jim Pallister stepped in and rifled the ball high into the net through a very narrow near post gap (10-1). A good performance in a rather unbalanced fixture, but City able to play some great spells of hockey, now seeing Norwich City Mens O40s Masters progress into the last 8 of the national competition, now the only team from this region left in the competition they are hoping for a home tie this time. Player Of The Match: Pete Morgan – “pipped it by a couple of votes over Steffan Griffiths” Thank You For Coming: Pies – “Not the greatest of starts for the team’s captain it must be said…” Champagne Moment: Jim P – “shooting into the back of his own teammate!”
