Hannah Phillips scored the opening goal early on for Norwich City after a well structured midfield worked the ball up the pitch. Wisbech however, determined to score, pilled on the pressure forcing Norwich City to defend through the remaining first half. Wisbech were rewarded just before the half time whistle and scored with an unfortunate deflection into the net. Entering the second half Norwich City were hit hard by a more determined Wisbech side, and despite a trying defense and some excellent saves from Gina Hunt , Norwich City’s player of the match, Wisbech scored twice more to put the score line 3-1 in their favor. On this occasion Norwich Womens 1’s didn’t managed to head home with their first points of the season, however are looking positively to another exciting game in a brilliant league.

LADIES 2ND XI - 01/10/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 2nd XI DATE: 01/10/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 2nd XI VS 01/10/2016 HEADLINE: High Spirits LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham H20 RESULT: 2-0 Win REPORT: Riding high after two wins on the bounce, the 2's encouraged high team spirits by playing some 90's pop in the changing rooms. This was sure to secure another victory. Starting the game with a high intensity and creating numerous chances the 2’s were unlucky to not find the back of the net. The front 5 continued to pile pressure on the Dragons defence, whilst Karren Dagless, Alex leMesuier and Leigh-Ann Worrall swept up any threats posed from the oppositions attacking options. With 35 minutes left to score, remaining composed was key and the womens 2s began the half determined to gain the lead. Emily Francis, Ellie Brine and Milly Brown were unlucky to not find a way through from the sweeping balls across the goal mouth. Eventually, the 2s managed to take advantage when Ellie Brine smashed the ball into the back of the net from a well rehearsed short corner routine. The score line was increased further as Ellie Brine found a ball which was swept in from the left side of the pitch by Matilda Warde-Aldam. In the final ten minutes, efforts from Ange Hindle and Annabelle Pheonix in midfield prevented Dragons finding a way back into the game. The final scoreline reflected a convincing win for the womens 2’s. Match report kindly provided by the well deserved player of the match Milly Brown.

LADIES 3RD XI - 01/10/2016 VS NORWICH CITY 4 (H) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 01/10/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 01/10/2016 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 5-1 (W) REPORT: City 3’s arrived at Taverham for an early morning game against the newly promoted City 4’s. The game started with the 4’s having much of the possession and looked very good going forward, the 3’s worked hard to defend and trying to push the ball out of the danger zone but when a loose ball was fumbled inside the D the 4’s seized their opportunity and planted it firmly in the back of the net. With this as a big wake up call for the 3’s we knew we had to up our game and started putting on more pressure, raising the intensity. The 3’s kept their heads and with some great movement from the back and midfield , Caroline Illing found herself in a good position on the right and swept the ball into the D where Mollae Scott was able to slot the ball past the keeper. With this goal city 3’s found their passion and started to pick up the pace and soon after Jenni Stanghan stopped the ball from a 16 yard hit, skilfully drove into the D where Caroline Illing popped the ball high into the net leaving the score 2-1 at half time. After a much needed team talk from Pies, in the second half City 3’s continued to put the pressure on. In the heat of the sun we kept our cool with some great passing round the back from Kirsten Aitken and Gemma Sargent who fed the ball up to Anna Brooke pushing forward to open up the game with some skilfully timed passes up to the attack. Olivia Greenway found herself in space when she received the ball inside the D and passed it across the goal to Emily Greenway who slipped the ball in over the line. The 4’s did not give up and continued to fight for the ball and managed to break into the D several times, but with some text book defending from Jenny Brine who stood her ground and some great tackles from Maddie Anthony they made it difficult for the opposition to form an attack. With more pressure from City 3’s the ball was played round the back and onto the stick of Mollae Scott who swept the ball into the left of the goal. Soon after City were awarded a short corner, the ball was pushed out hard by Olivia Greenway and received by Caroline Illing at the top of the D and slipped it under her arm to Maddie Anthony who, with a great strike, fired the ball into the back of the goal leaving the final scored 5-1. Huge credit to the effort and work rate of the 4’s who did not give up and gave us a good game and by no means made it easy! Excellent team effort from the 3’s which was shown in the POTM with many players receiving votes but it was awarded to Anna Brooke for her hard work and determination throughout the game.

Norwich City contiued the pressure into the second half with goals from Heather Tasker and Bev Cushion. A sterling performance from the womens 5th team again, placing them now top of the league.

A youthful and organised Lowestoft Railway pressed hard and moved the ball around a pivot player to constantly change their direction of attack. However, Norwich’s defence of Charlotte Harrod, Clair Richardson, Annabelle Conway and Emma Guyton kept their heads and battled to keep a clean sheet. Hard work in midfield and some excellent clearances by the defence allowed Norwich to repeatedly break and seriously threaten the home team’s goal with Norwich winning several short corners. Then 15 minutes into the first half Norwich converted a short corner with Josine Van Den Berg netting a ball fired towards the goal by Carol McNarry. Second half. The home team pressed harder in the second half but attempt after attempt was rebutted by Norwich’s hard working defence whose experience and strength on the ball allowed them to continually disarm the youthful Lowestoft attackers. Anna Linsmith in goal was called into play constantly and made several important saves right on the line which kept a dismayed Lowestoft out of the game. POM – Carey Briggs for her tireless running in midfield. Match report provided by Liz Hollis

City lost the reverse fixture 6-1 earlier in the season so todays win is an indication of the improvement made. A further positive sign is the number of players receiving nominations for player of the match although Charlotte Girling secured the 'prize' for another excellent display at centre half. Katy Walker was not far behind for her tireless work in the forward line. Congratulations too to Imogen Langley on an impressive debut. City had the majority of possession in the first half with several solid spells of passing. Dragons came back strongly at the start of the first half but the 7s defence and midfield worked well to keep them at bay and City were soon back on top and pressing hard on goal. So onwards and upwards for the 7s.

MENS 1ST XI - 01/10/2016 VS WISBECH TOWN (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 01/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 01/10/2016 HEADLINE: City show mental strength in comeback win LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION B VENUE: TRF RESULT: 4-2 REPORT: With a full squad of 15, Norwich City went into the game knowing that they could play high intensity hockey without suffering in the later stages of the game. This squad included the return of Alex Scott for his first appearance for the 1s in nearly two years, and Nick Jones returned for his first outing as captain. With the disappointment of realising that the Preston on the team sheet was in fact Louis and not Rory out of the way, the team took to the pitch in a positive frame of mind. Early pressure saw Norwich take the lead after a penalty corner broke down – City took advantage of their extra numbers with the ball eventually finding Chris Wardale on the left hand side of the D to volley home into the back of the net. City continued to apply the pressure for much of the first half and had the chance to go two up after a defender blocked the ball on the line with his body. Unfortunately the resulting flick was missed and Wisbech soon had one of their own when their centre forward was brought down as he was bearing down on goal. This meant that City went into the break, somewhat undeservedly, at 1-1 and down to 10 men, after what had been a promising first half. Early in the second half Wisbech got a second through a deflected ball in – Ali Cooke being somewhat unfortunate in goal not to keep out the spinning ball as it ricocheted of his pads and trickled across the line. There was an initial period of disappointment with this from City, but after realising that the game was still well within their control they began to press hard again and dominate proceedings. From here on in it was one way traffic, wave after wave of City attacks, but struggling to find the crucial breakthrough. Nevertheless City remained positive in the belief that it would come. The intensity of the game was raised further and Wisbech simply couldn’t handle it with their smaller squad size and inferior fitness. Eventually the hard work paid off when Dave Skinner produced what can only be described as a Zlatan-esque lob on the keep from a tight angle on the right hand side of the D. Norwich continued their dominance and shortly after got the goal for the lead when an overload was created when the ball was won high up the pitch after a penalty corner had broken down - the ball eventually finding its way to Nick Jones at the back post to volley into the open net. As the game drew to a close Wisbech lacked ideas and the game was well seen out by City who got a fourth near the final whistle when Dave Skinner slotted another goal from a tight angle beating the keeper at his near post. City maintain their unbeaten home record in the league since the 08-Feb-2015.

MENS 3RD XI - 01/10/2016 VS DEREHAM 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 01/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 01/10/2016 HEADLINE: Newly promoted City 3s come away on top against local rivals Dereham 2s LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: TAVERHAM, SAND RESULT: CITY 3, DEREHAM 2 REPORT: With both Norwich City 3s and Dereham 2s needing to work hard this season to compete with the strength of teams around them in what is always a very competitive and hard fought Division 2N, the 3 points on offer at Taverham this Saturday were clearly the primary target for this local derby. Both teams fielding an impressive balance of experience, many players from both teams having previous 1st team experience “in their day”, with quick and agile youngsters around them, City having the stronger of the youngsters so it was really going to be how well they could balance their experience and use their strength to exploited their oppositions weaknesses. The game started with City putting on the main pressure but it was clear that the battle was going to be won or lost in midfield this week, both teams creating good early chances but City slightly more mobile in the middle of the pitch with their very youthful line up of Sam Bingham, George Brine and Harry Paterson. The first goal came as a result of great interplay between to newly formed forward line of Matthew Brine, David Fletcher, Joe Konieczny and Mark Fletcher, the ball slipping past the oncoming keeper for Konieczny slotting the ball at the far post. The lead was to be short lived unfortunately as City allowed Dereham back into the game when a poor interception at the back allowed the ball to creep through to the Dereham attacker to strike home from close range. City had seen most of the play but the Dereham keeper was showing signs of his National League experience of years ago, snuffling out some great shots and opportunities that City were trying to put away. The second for City came just before half time when Sam Bingham threaded a perfection pass towards the far post to pick out the run in behind the defence of Matthew Brine, his first touch almost squeezing under his arm into the bottom corner but the first save resulting in the ball back at Brine’s feet for him to calmly flick the ball high and into the far upper corner of the goal to ensure the keeper had no chance for the second time of asking. Just before half time, less than two minutes to play, City were unable to retain the much needed possession up the Dereham end of the pitch, the ball breaking quickly to the high awaiting attacker, his first touch taking him away from the City marker and a move around the top of the circle found himself firing the ball high into the top corner, the City keeper, Ben Millett, having no chance to do anything about it. The whistle went within seconds of the restart at the score line was 2-2 at half time. The second half resumed much like the first, but the tiring legs of the visitors allowed City to create more chances, sadly a lack of composure and making the right decisions resulted in not enough of the possession turning into real opportunities, albeit a number of chances were created, notably a shot fired high into the corner by Matthew Brine bringing out the best in the Dereham keeper. An exciting half with ball possession exchanging between teams but the it was looking like the deadlock was never going to be broken, even Chris Perry at the top for a number of short corners was unable to find his usual hole through the defensive line up, however with a matter of minutes remaining on the clock it was George Brine who made one of his trademark runs from the midfield, driving around the left and then using his skills to outwit the Dereham defence to move along the base line, his pace to an unmarked City player on the penalty flick spot was intercepted by a Dereham defender only to see the inception slipping the ball into his own goal. The final whistle was blown and City 3-2 winners in a game they knew they needed to get the win out of but probably feeling it should have been a far more comfortable score line on reflection of how much possession they actually had in the game. Next week they head down to Suffolk where they will play IES 2s, the team whom finished runners up to them at the end of last season at the top of Division 3NE, so both teams keen to claim points in this encounter of the newbies in Division 2N.

Despite having a fairly even share of play in the first half, Norwich came into the break 0-2 down. After a positive half time talk by Captain Ingham, City began the second half competing as equals again. A third goal from Lowestoft would have sunk most teams, but City continued to press. Their reward came from Patel at a penalty corner, flicking powerfully high to the keepers right. From here on in the story should have been one of a City fightback, rightly getting something from the game. The reality was something very different! With Railway's midfield dominating, City were powerless to stop their pace, and 1-3 became 1-7 by the end. Credit must go to an over run City defence, with MOTM Tom Bailey shining on a difficult day Onwards and updwards to Magpies this week!

MENS 5TH XI - 01/10/2016 VS LOWESTOFT RAILWAY 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 01/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 01/10/2016 HEADLINE: Wet and soggy away victory LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: RESULT: 4-3 win REPORT: The 5ths had the lovely away trip to Lowestoft on Saturday. The captain was looking for good pre-match preparation and had the team meet about 2hours early (hopefully he will know where Lowestoft is next time!). On arrival the pre-match preparation continued on realisation that the opposition were wearing the same colours! Fortunately, our lovely womens 6s were there before us (clearly more switched on as they had the red away shirts). At the end of their match there was a swapping of shirts with some interesting sights with many of the 5s literally squeezing into shirts. Clearly the shirt fiasco helped as the team burst into life with a quick goal from in-form, Ash Bird. Lowestoft found their feet and came back into the game with some attacks of their own - fortunately, Al Paterson decided to return from his pre-season tour of Asia to give some added grit to the defence. It was not long before red-hot, Ash Bird dribbled around three defenders to find the back of the net for the second time. The opposition came back into the game with two goals of their own. At this point the heavens decided to open with an almighty storm which saw both teams leave the field for 15 minutes. After a soaking, City certainly looked the brighter of the two teams. City quickly got back into action. Rocky want-to-be, David Broadway, thought that 'when in Lowestoft, do as Lowestoft' as he took a card for a slight altercation with a member of the opposition. This seemed to spring David into action - clearly he was simply looking for a rest - within seconds of being allowed back onto the field, fiery Broaders tapped in yet another goal (please ensure he is in your fantasy team - Broaders is a goal machine at present). Shaun Ferris then found the back of the net with a well worked team goal to give City a 4-2 lead with 5 minutes remaining. A short corner to Lowestoft was bravely stopped by Al Paterson before one of their forwards tapped in the rebound. With minutes remaining, Lowestoft threw the kitchen sink a City. Grocer made several excellent saves throughout the game, but none more important than a fine block on the line with the last play of the game. A well-earned 4-3 away victory! Man of the match, Geoff Spencer was a rock as always at the back. League leaders, Dragons 3 at home next week.

MENS 7TH XI - 01/10/2016 VS IPSWICH 4 (H) TEAM: Mens 7th XI DATE: 01/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 7th XI VS 01/10/2016 HEADLINE: A slick performance LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: TRF RESULT: NORWICH CITY 7 3 IPSWICH 4 0 REPORT: City 7's arrived with another collection of players from all quarters, boosted by appearances from Paul Gallop and Dan Taylor, but recording a last appearance for Andy Lister before disappearing across the pond. Ipswich arrived with an experienced team that looked as if it may be capable of causing City problems. City lined up with Julian Blake in the unaccustomed position of full back and Paul Gallop at right half, but with a strong midfield of Dan Taylor, Andy Lister and Will Kidner. The forward line consisted of three youngsters, Luke Keeley, Lee Allsop and Ben Chapman, It was the City midfield strength that was to prove pivotal and they pretty much dominated the game creating chances for the forwards as well as themselves and stemming a lot of the Ipswich attacks. Most Ipswich attacks were prevented from reaching the circle thanks to the work of Julian Blake, Ali Wardale, Nathan Dixon, but when they did keeper Paul Hewett was on hand to clear. City won a number of short corners as a result of their attacks which weren't converted and with a goalless first half looking likely it took a rasping shot from Andy Lister to break the deadlock. The second half continued in much the same vein, except that City were able to convert a couple of chances, Luke Keeley getting the last touch to a goalmouth melee and then Paul Gallop deceiving the keeper with a slow looping flick, that really wasn't a shot at all. There was an adult team debut for Kurtis Reynolds who stepped in at the last minute to ensure that City 7's were able to play with a full complement. What was more pleasing than the result was the standard of hockey that the team played moving the ball about well, good movement off the ball and a high work rate. Ali Wardale

W (2-0) 01/10/2016 - MD vs Dereham (H / L) DYNAMIC DEVS DOMINATE DEREHAM |

MENS DEVELOPMENT XI - 01/10/2016 VS DEREHAM (H) TEAM: Mens Development XI DATE: 01/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens Development XI VS 01/10/2016 HEADLINE: Dynamic Devs dominate Dereham LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 2-0 REPORT: Despite some very late positional juggling moments before the match started due unexpected team changes City started with pace and determination in all areas of the pitch. The first quarter saw constant City pressure with the inside forwards, Rio Iaccarino and Jonty Black, complementing each other perfectly with a balance of mature calmness and terrier like energy to set up attack after attack. The movement on and off the ball of the new look forward line (Rocco Iaccarino, Freddie Paterson and Monty Platt) looked to be toying with the opposition and after a delightful interchange down the left it was no surprise that Monty opened the scoring. After a quick team talk (thanks Sam T) the second quarter saw a more cultured approach with the ball being driven forward and then switched 'back and around'. One delectable 5 minute spell seeing almost telepathic passing between Elliot Fox, Joseph Roy and Ethan Rushton which culminated in Freddie's stick skills doubling the home advantage 2-0. Whilst City remained dominant in the third quarter they were caught napping a couple of times when the defence were (almost too) keen to join the attacks. These momentary lapses gave Will Woodhead the chance to clear his lines with a couple of excellent kicks from the top of his D. As the quarter wore on City created numerous chances with a combination of dazzling dribbling down the left (Jonty/Monty) or passing and moving down the right (Rio, Rocco and Sam Hyatt playing in a very unaccustomed right wing role!). Freddie, Monty, Jonty and Sam all coming close to scoring. Elliot Fox's reading of the game from his deep midfield role was a notable highlight and shows how his reading of the game continues to mature. Oddly, the final quarter was a much more even affair and City were indebted to some excellent defensive interceptions particularly from Captain Cameron Husband, Kurtis Reynolds and Joseph Roy. Leading 2-0 it appeared that the home side were starting to panick (why oh why?) however in the final 5 minutes City restored some order with sensible 'keep ball' hockey down the wings. Joseph Roy and Freddie Paterson were jointly named man of the match.
