Roll on next season :)

MENS 4TH XI - 18/03/2017 VS SUDBURY 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 18/03/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 18/03/2017 HEADLINE: Sudbury too Strong for City Debutants LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: Great Cornard Sports Centre, Sudbury RESULT: Lost 3-8 REPORT: Sudbury's fight for survival in Div 3NE took a step in the right direction as City's depleated 4th XI struggled on the road. With availability at a new low, Captain Ingham gained support from the lower teams via Lee Allsop, Jack Watling and the evergreen Steve Fretwell as well as the returning James Halls and Paul Roy from the 3's. Hey presto, 11 players went to Sudbury! It didn't take long for before City fell behind, when poor marking allowed Sudbury to score past King in goal. This sparked City into action and they raced into a 2-1 lead via a trademark Leonard penalty corner drag flick and a far post tapin from Kidner. The lead didn't last long however, as Sudbury pushed forwards again and again, eventually scoring twice and City went to the break 2-3 down Sadly, City's legs (in fact Halls leg) were not good enough and the floodgates opened with fabulous strikes all finding the corners. The only bright spot was a secong goal from Leonard. Final score 3-8 MOTM: Rees Leonard

City's defensive discipline continued to be second best and Ipswich doubled their lead at a short corner, then went 3-0 up after poor marking allowed another tap-in to Jewers left. Finally a glimour of hope came just before the interval when man of the match Ordish broke free down the right and powered in a shot from the edge of the 'D' into the far corner. Half time 1-3 After a positive half time talk, City came out a different team. Tireless running from the midfield quartet of Ingham (Jack), Leonard, Taylor and Harris began to pay dividends. City reduced the deficit when a loose ball in the 'D' fell to Leonard who cooly flicked over the grounded Ipswich keeper. With Ipswich tiring, City deservedly pulled level after good work close in from Kidner played in Ordish who drilled home on the reverse from the flick spot. Sadly, the final whistle came when City might have gone on to win

It was Bury who pressed harder in the early stages and eventually found the net when a mistake from Ingham gave away possession inside City's half and Bury swiflty raced in on goal two against one to score through Turner Oddly, this set back spurred into life and were unlucky not to level before the break after chances came and went for the forward line of Cooper, Kidner and Hyatt Half time 0-1 Bury's Bibby doubled their lead in the second half and City reduced the deficit late on when MOTM Cooper converted a precision cross from the lively Taylor. Unfortunately, one goal was all City could muster and with 4 games remaining are now looking ever closer at the relagation zone below them Full time 1-2

MENS 4TH XI - 18/02/2017 VS NEWMARKET (H) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 18/02/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 18/02/2017 HEADLINE: Lightening Didn't Strike Twice LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham High School RESULT: Norwich 1 : 4 Newmarket REPORT: City Men's 4s welcomed Top of the Table Newmarket to Taverham this week and although the gap between the two teams suggested a mere formality for the away side, the game was competitive throughout and hotly contested all over the pitch. City matched blow for blow early on and could have found themselves ahead had the finishing been better but were undone midway through the first half by slack marking and sharp finishing from Newmarket. A sustained period of open play in the visitors half led to a well deserved Penalty Flick for the home team which was coolly dispatched by Rees Leonard which should have seen the sides go into the break level, but again a momentary lapse of concentration from a free hit in Newmarket's favour, resulted in a tap in from close quarters at the near post. The second half started brightly for the home side with sustained pressure in the final third of the pitch, however wasted chances and missed passes finally worked against City as a flurry of attacks from Newmarket culminated in a smart run to the byline and pullback which found two attackers waiting for a sweep shot at goal for a 3:1 lead. This gave the away side the space and time needed to control the final 15 minutes as City were reduced to occasional attacks. Newmarket had many advances into the home team's area from then on wards and one final thunderous drive from the top of the 'D' left the home side with a convincing defeat. Final Score: Norwich City 4s 1: 4 Newmarket. Man of the Match: Rees Leonard

MENS 4TH XI - 11/02/2017 VS IES 3 (A) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 11/02/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 11/02/2017 HEADLINE: Put It All On Black Frosty LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: IES RESULT:0-7 REPORT: City set off down the A140 thinking they had an early start, only to find the 1st team ready to start their match as we arrived in Ipswich. To be honest the 4’s then spent the remainder of their time in Suffolk playing catch up. A reasonable first half, blighted by an injury to Chris Baker, saw a 2-0 score line to the hosts at half time. Stand in captain Dale was encouraged though, we had had plenty of possession all was not lost. Two deflected goals conceded, we could overcome. The second half started with just ten City players due to another injury, and with Chris gamely limping on, the team were mightily relieved to see JK arrive. Even with his talismanic presence, City were unable to prevent wave after wave of IES attacks from putting the result beyond their reach. So a day to forget and the search for vital points continues. The teams’ best wishes go to the departing Baker who surely can fit in one last game next week, Chris you don’t want to finish with a loss now do you? To our holidaying skipper, we trust you are having more luck in the casinos of Vegas then we did on the pitch. With so many red shirts descending on the city goal today, perhaps you should put it all on black.

However, with 15 minutes gone, the pivotal moment of the game came when City's Captain Ingham attempted a clearance in his 'D' only to see the ball ricochet into his head causing a hospital visit and leaving only 11 players to play out the remaining 55 minutes. The details are somewhat sketchy from hereon in due to the Captain missing the rest of the game but still needing to write this match report! As I understand it, Magpies soon went 0-3 ahead only for the ever youthful Jon Kidner to pull one back before the break, 1-3 Two more Magpies goals and a good City performance later and the game finished with Magpies securing a 5-1 win. On a positive note, the Skipper is fixed and will be back in action next week! MOTM: Josh Bailey

City started well on the infamous 'beach' and dominated the first half with Jack Ingham and Josh Bailey running riot on the left side. However, against the run of play it was Lowestoft who took the lead when an unlucky deflection in the 'D' allowed an easy finish past Jewers in City's goal. City then quickly capitalised on their dominance with a close range tap in from Will Kidner followed by a brace from the free scoring Rees Leonard. The first coming from a deflection off a defenders foot and the second an unstoppable drag flick at a penalty corner Half Time 3-1 to City Chances came and went in the second half, with MOTM Jake Cushion and Joe Cowan dominating in the midfield. With 5 minutes of the match to go, Lowestoft scored a break away concellation but City held on to take a deserved 3 points Final Score: 3-2 City MOTM: Jake Cushion

MENS 4TH XI - 03/12/2016 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS (A) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: Against All Odds LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 3 NORTH EAST VENUE: Culford School, Bury St Edmunds RESULT: Won 2-1 REPORT: City 4s travelled to Bury for a late afternoon game trying to better the 6-0 defeat on the opening game of the season against 3rd place Bury 1's. City started brightly after Leonard's long pass found Gallop in the 'D' who won a Penalty Corner, which Leonard dispatched to make it 1-0. Bury then upped the tempo of their play and soon won a Penalty Stroke, however Jewers was in defiant mood and saved the stroke high to his left. Bury though deserved their equalizer 5 mins later when City failed to clear a ball in the 'D' and left Jewers with no chance. 1-1 at half time and (in the words of JK) captain Ingham produced halftime team talk full of clichés to try and motivate the troops. In the 2nd half City were tested, it was fair to say that the thin ice we were standing on was beginning to crack. Jewers though was not in a giving mood and stood up to every shot and Penalty Corner, Bury were just not going to pass this afternoon. Ingham, W Kidner, Tomlinson, Duffy and Doncaster in particular were not giving up without a fight and while I may be a bit unkind to other players it's fair to say they put in the biggest of shifts. With 10 mins to go and Bury pressing very high up the pitch, another Leonard long ball found Doncaster who beat two players and who's cross found Gallop in the middle of an open goal to tap in for a 2-1 lead. Some more last ditch defending, a Duffy green card and even Bury taking their keeper off was the final act of a 2-1 win for the 4s. POTM was Rob Duffy

With Pelicans starting the brighter of the two teams, it looked like City were in for a long afternoon. Fortunately, City began to find their rhythm in midfield with Ralph Jackman winning the battle to allow Adie Land and Rees Leonard to build attacks on. With the movement of City’s front three consisting of Miles Doncaster, Declan Ordish and Jake Cushion it wasn’t long before City took the lead through a speculative shot from Cushion finding the back of the Pelicans goal. City saw out the half with some fine defensive performances from Simon Dale, Adam Richardson and Doug Tomlinson. City Started the second half looking in control but searching for a second goal. Pelicans were able to take advantage of this breaking at speed and with an overload on the far post were able to find a way past Guy Thrower in goal to level the scores. City, undeterred, stuck to the game plan and were soon in front again when Leonard found space in the D and converted his chance with a reverse shot. Pelicans seemed to implode at this point managing to rack up 2 green cards and 3 yellow cards in the second half. With so many cards it was good to see Jon Kidner keep his discipline and stay on the pitch! City, now with a numerical advantage, again found the back of the Pelicans goal this time through Doncaster with a well-placed finish over the advancing keeper. City finished the game with some last ditch defending from Frosty, Jamie Higginbotham and Thrower in goal to keep the score at 3-1. MOTM. Jamie Higginbotham

A further goal by Haren Patel via a penalty stroke put City into a 3-0 ahead. This spurred IES into action, and with a penaly corner converted by Tingey and a further open play strike from Simmons, the game was in the balance at 3-2. With only 10 minutes left to play, City played their best hockey of the match. Fluent passing and movement allowed only scraps of possession to IES and when pressure did come on the City goal, a resolute defence and Dave King in goal gave nothing to the opposition Tim Armstrong won 'Man of the Match' not just for his goal but also for his superb discipline and tireless running on and off the ball Roll on next week away to Bury 2's

Despite having a fairly even share of play in the first half, Norwich came into the break 0-2 down. After a positive half time talk by Captain Ingham, City began the second half competing as equals again. A third goal from Lowestoft would have sunk most teams, but City continued to press. Their reward came from Patel at a penalty corner, flicking powerfully high to the keepers right. From here on in the story should have been one of a City fightback, rightly getting something from the game. The reality was something very different! With Railway's midfield dominating, City were powerless to stop their pace, and 1-3 became 1-7 by the end. Credit must go to an over run City defence, with MOTM Tom Bailey shining on a difficult day Onwards and updwards to Magpies this week!

MENS 4TH XI - 24/09/2016 VS NEWMARKET (A) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 24/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 24/09/2016 HEADLINE: THIRTHEEN GOAL THRILLER!!! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: Newmarket Leisure Centre RESULT: Won 7-6 REPORT: This week, it was an afternoon match at Newmarket for City's 4th XI; a town which puts horses above humans in the pecking order. So after being extra vigilant when driving next to the racecourse, we found ourselves on the pitch with a 13 man squad and some unusual new socks that Frosty found in the furthest depths of the store cupboard. City started off a bit topsy turvey. I blame the socks, but nevertheless, Newmarket were not hanging around and took an early lead. But City kept pushing and gradually got better and better through the first half. A City short corner was not dealt with by the opposition and Haran Patel fired our first goal home. As we started to build more confidence, Mr Josh Bailey went on a dream run from half way with a bit of fancy stick work and tucked in another just before half time, 2-1 City. Half time team talk was predicting an early second half charge from Newmarket, and they got 3 goals in quick succession to put City down 4-2. But it wasn’t over... The next 10 mins saw a tiring Newmarket, and City started to get on their nerves. Mistakes from the goalie allowed Declan Ordish and Cameron Cooke to slot in some easy finishes. While Chris Baker’s clinical finish put us back in the lead at 5-4. All the time City were improving, even with some tired legs out there. But Newmarket made it tricky with some pace and good passing. They levelled again to make it 5-5. It was now getting to the latter stage of the match. Ordish found some space and fired home his second of the match, 6-5 to City. But City’s goal of the day came from the one and only Ash ‘That was Rude’ Bird. Bird found his inner ‘Messi’ by scoring the final goal from a one touch chip over the goalie from a Patel aerial 16. I pinched myself just in case I was dreaming, but as the cheers came through the city players, I knew it was reality, 7-5. Only a late consolation from Bury made it a nervous last couple of minutes. Final score… 7-6 City. A game of true grit, determination and some special goals. And we never gave up. Fantastic game of Hockey.

Suffice to say Bury 1's (newly relegated from Div 3) were very serious about bouncing straight back to Div 3 at the first attempt. With a fit 15 man squad, all hungry for success on a hot day, this one was a little one sided. 3-0 at half time, cue City's Ady Marr who managed to carve out their best openings early in the second half, but only slightly off target and no reward! Three more goals from Bury later and things to work on for next week!
