MENS 1ST XI - 15/02/2020 VS WAPPING 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 15/02/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 15/02/2020 HEADLINE: Tough game LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: Another trip to Lee Valley for the Men’s 1st team this weekend to face second in the table Wapping 2’s, on a day in which Storm Dennis didn’t put the team off travelling and playing. Both teams started with great intensity which led to a feisty affair with two competitive sides. Playing into the wind first half Norwich broke Wappings press on a number of occasions but no avail with great work from Ingham, Wardale and Cresswell leading the line. Midway through the first half, City conceded a short corner and a well worked routine to the back post saw Wapping take the lead. Not soon after a counter attack from Wapping led to a second, their forward driving round the base line with a simply ball to the flick spot for the on rushing forward to put the ball into the net. Apart from a couple of momentary lapses in concentration, City had troubled Wapping for large parts of the half and a couple of short corners for City through the outfield Cooke double act before the end of the first half followed but sadly not converted. Down wind for the second half and message to keep intensity high, the press worked well with Wapping giving the ball away numerous times in dangerous areas led to City having more opportunities however still unable to capitalise. Tempers flared and cards issued, Morgan the unlikely and unfortunate recipient of a yellow and a 5 minute sit down. City battled on mopping up any Wapping attacks, the defensive unit led by Brown stopped any attacks and distribute well through the screens and outer midfielders. The final whistle went and a frustrating afternoon for Norwich with a 2-0 loss in a game where points could’ve been picked up. A week off for Norwich allows them time to prepare for the league leaders West Herts.

W (7-3) 01/02/2020 - M1 vs Ipswich 1 (H / L) IT'S ALL IN THE(IR) NAME... |

MENS 1ST XI - 01/02/2020 VS IPSWICH 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 01/02/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 01/02/2020 HEADLINE: It's All In The(ir) Name... LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: Taverham Recreational Facility RESULT: 7-3 Win REPORT: Norwich City continued their rich vein of scoring form against their second Suffolk rival in 2 weeks, as they came away victors in a thrilling 7-3 match against Ipswich Seven Hockey Club. City set the early pace as they put pressure on the visitors right from the off, with their first real sight of goal coming from a short corner inside the first 5 minutes. Thomas Cooke's low flick proved too much for the Ipswich keeper who could only deflect the ball past the covering defender. As the half went on Ipswich begin to create their own attacking opportunities and had levelled the score within the first quarter of the games, a quickly taken freehit getting the slightest of touches inside the circle and whilst City's 'keeper Alastair Cooke took all the sting out of the shot, he was unable to deny another ipswich forward who converted from a matter of inches. Ipswich then took the lead as City were unable to clear their defensives lines and got drawn to the ball as the visitors drove round the right hand side of the circle, leaving a man unmarked at the back post to convert an easy chance. City's ambition for another victory never faltered and they were back ahead before the break, equalising through a Felix Broadway flick following a spectacular ball from Thomas Cooke to find Louis Preston in the circle who then found Pete Morgan to set up Broadway for an impressive finish into the side netting. The go ahead go was scored by Stuart Wardle, returning from a week away the previous game, who converted a well executed short corner routine with a neat deflection through the 'keeper's legs. Halftime and advantage Norwich City. After the break Ipswich came out the stronger of the 2 teams and put City under pressure in the early stages of the second half, and managed to pull themselves back onto level terms with a scrappy goal finished from close range after a combination of City defenders and goalkeeper kept out the first 2 attempts. Unfortunately for Ipswich this was to be their last real involvement in the second half, not troubling Alastair Cooke again for the remainder of the game. Not to be disheartened by the set back City got back into their stride and within 10 minutes they had gone back in front, Wardle involved again as he smartly turned one defender on the edge of the circle with the next defender only able to halt his progress illegally and the umpired awarded a penalty stroke. Man of the Match Chris Wardale stepped off the bench to coolly convert the penalty, before returning to his seat before the restart. City's fifth came after Preston intercepted a long ball forward from Ipswich, and then passed inside to Morgan who found Wardale leading wide inside the Ipswich circle. After taking a touch to set himself, Wardale rifled a ball at the target with the despairing visitor's goalkeeper only able to deflect the ball down into the turf and onto the backboard. The hosts further extended their lead when Pete Morgan's searching pass was deflected up and over the Ipswich keeper, and skipper Preston beat Harry Cresswell off the ball to get the decisive touch before the ball crossed the line. Victory (and a Hattrick for the man of the match) was sealed with little over 5 minutes to go with Wardale converting another short corner, with Cooke snr. drawing the outrunning defenders and laying off a near perfect ball to allow Wardale to finish first time into a relatively unguarded goal. A great result for Norwich which sees the hosts leapfrog their visiting rivals into the top half of the table.

D (1-1) 18/01/2020 - M1 vs Cambridge City 2 (H / L) CITY SETTLE FOR A DRAW AGAINST CAMBRIDGE CITY 2’S |

MENS 1ST XI - 18/01/2020 VS CAMBRIDGE CITY 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 18/01/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 18/01/2020 HEADLINE: City settle for a draw against Cambridge City 2’s LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: Taverham H20 RESULT: 1-1 REPORT: City welcomed Cambridge City 2’s to the Taverham H20 hoping to take all three points after a disappointing loss last week against East London. The game began and City found themselves under pressure early on, after Cambridge won a penalty corner. Alistair Cooke made a fantastic diving save to his right hand side after a slick routine from the visitors. City grew into the game and started creating chances of their own. Louis Preston was finding space time and time again on City’s left wing, setting up some great chances in the opposition D that almost lead to City scoring, had it not been for some excellent saves from the Cambridge keeper. City continued to dominate, winning numerous short corners but unfortunately for City they were unable to convert. With five minutes left in the first half, City finally opened the scoring. Thomas Cooke started the move with a wonder ball across the pitch to Sam Bingham, who found Chris Wardale in front of the Cambridge goal, finishing smartly over the diving Cambridge keeper. HT 1-0 City City started the second half well, being patient with the back three seeing plenty of the ball. Cambridge had adopted an unusual half court press that stopped City playing the ball into the wide midfield players and made them start to force the ball through the middle of the pitch. City struggled to work out a way round the Cambridge system and starting to make mistakes that led to a long spell of pressure on the City goal. Cambridge got themselves back into the game, after a well worked penalty corner routine was fired into the City goal. The game became an end to end affair but neither side was able to get the goal to clinch the game. In the last minute of the game, a Jack Ingham deflection looked certain to give City the win but the Cambridge keeper pulled off another stunning save to keep the score level. FT 1-1 Overall a game of two halves. City will need to focus on the positives from their first half performance as they prepare for IES, away, next week.

MENS 1ST XI - 11/01/2020 VS EAST LONDON 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 11/01/2020 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 11/01/2020 HEADLINE: Close game for city LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: Norwich City’s Mens 1st Team traveller down to the Olympic Park hoping to avenge the loss in the cup to East London before the festive break and continue there good form in the league on the build up to Christmas. City battled well in the first half, creating a number of opportunities however to no avail. It was East London who broke the deadlock with a good short routine putting Norwich 1-0 within the first quarter of the game. They pulled back level with a Jack Ingham strike from mid way inside the ‘D’. A good inception from Brown at the back created an overload with him finding Morgan in the ‘D’ to calmly pass past the on rushing keeper for Ingham to cooly slot home a deserved equaliser. A few short corners too finish the half for Norwich but no success. Mid way through the second half a successful short corner routine from City took them into the lead. A low ball from Cooke allowed Wardle to deflect past the keeper and into the net. 2-1 Norwich. Sadly the lead didn’t remain with East London fortunately having their on rushing player use his handle to knock the ball over the line following the goal mouth melee. A third soon followed with City unable to clear following a short corner and a good finish at the back post made it 3-2. With city pushing forward chances were going to be created at both ends. Cameron Cooke unfortunate to see his efforts sail over the bar. A final short corner saw East London score again within the final two minutes with game finishing 4-2 to East London.

MENS 1ST XI - 07/12/2019 VS CHELMSFORD 1 (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 07/12/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 07/12/2019 HEADLINE: Emphatic Victory For City LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: Norwich city Men’s 1s welcomed Chelmsford HC to the fortress wanting to make it three wins on the bounce and with JC on board for a pre-match pep talk the team looked looked full of energy heading into the match. It was clear from he start Chelmsford were going to press high allowing the ball to be played to the half back’s and then closing the ball down quickly. Thankfully the hard work put in at training meant it was second nature for city’s screens to find the space between Chelmford's defensive lines, relieving pressure from city’s defense. With the ball being moved on quickly from the screens out to the wingers city soon found themselves in the attacking 3rd putting Chelmsford under of pressure. City’s own press soon paid off with Cameron Cooke, currently in a rich vein of form, turning the ball over from a stray pass and then driving into the D, switching the ball onto his reverse and finishing with a powerful shot to the top corner. Chelmsford tried to up the tempo playing on the break only for city’s defense to hold strong wining their one on one battles and midfield working back to further protect a clean sheet. With a little bit of luck city ended the half 2-0 up with a clearance off the line from Rich Green and a neat tight angled finish from Chris Wardale, rising up the top scorers table. The message at half time was a simple one, keep working for each other, keep finding the space between Chelmsford lines and force the ball to where we want it. With Chelmsford tiring, city kept up the pressure, pressing high on their defense, creating an overload and as a result lead to further goals from city's forwards. City controlled the rest of the half with only a couple of scares managing to hold onto the clean sheet and scoring some lovely team goals. the game finished 6-0.

The boys were fired up and warmed up well, looking forward to the game. Unfortunately this didn’t translate into a fast start and the students scored a lucky rebound early on. Two more short corner goals followed before a very lucky close range shot looped over the keeper and in. City addressed the issues at half time and came out hard, with Cameron Cooke testing the keeper on multiple occasions. The breakthrough came when Luie Corden won the ball high up the pitch and set up Felix Broadway who volleyed in. City can look back positively on the second half but need to do better next week in a must win at local rivals Dereham

MENS 1ST XI - 09/11/2019 VS WEST HERTS 1 (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 09/11/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 09/11/2019 HEADLINE: Tough Game for the Mens 1st XI LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: On Saturday Norwich city men’s 1’s took on West Harts 1st team. Facing a long journey to Watford on a rather bleak afternoon in the pouring down rain against a team that sat securely at the top of the table was intimidating, something which clearly affected Alastair Cooke, who after a brief foray into rally driving almost wrapped his truck around a tree. City got off to a poor start conceding 3 quick goals within the first 10 minutes, despite this rattling start they did manage to find a foothold and began working to keep West Herts at bay. Captain Louis Preston took a stick to the head and whilst manager Iain Martin was tending to his needs, VC Thomas Cooke took it upon himself to get the team round and give and sort out defensive positioning to combat West Herts’ attack. After the short break city started playing much better hockey and even managed to get a couple of shots away at the other end of the pitch, which gave the defense a short, but much-needed break. West Herts then managed to pick up a couple of attacking short corners, which were well-rehearsed routines and executed, managing to pick up another 2 goals shortly before half time. Half time - 5-0 down. The second half was totally different, city played some very good hockey and managed to break down the vast majority of West Herts attacks. The opposition had plenty of attacking shorts corners but City manned to defend them well. City finished the game losing 7-0. A scoreline that didn’t reflect how well city played right through until the end. West Harts were a far better team who are currently top of the league and look set to secure promotion without much difficulty this season. Man of the match was Alastair Cooke who, despite conceding 7, performed very well against skilled opposition

MENS 1ST XI - 02/11/2019 VS WAPPING 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 02/11/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 02/11/2019 HEADLINE: Disappointing result for City LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: City welcomed Wapping 2’s to the Taverham H20 this week hoping to pick up some points after two disappointing league defeats in a row. City started the game well moving the ball around nicely and maintaining the majority of possession in the opening ten minutes. City came close to opening the scoring when a Chris Wardale shot was almost deflected in by Harry Cresswell arriving at the back post. A few moments later City gave away a soft penalty corner, which Wapping took full advantage of with a drag flick that was rifled into the top left corner of the City net. Not long after the restart City levelled the score with a great individual goal from Cameron Cooke. He breezed past 3 players on his way into the circle before smashing a reverse stick shot between the keeper’s legs. City continued to create chances but were unable to capitalise. It was instead the opposition who took the lead as the half came to a close, after a well worked Wapping counter ended with the ball being pushed into the City goal. HT City 1-2 Wapping City began the second half knowing that they were still well in the game, although with Stuart Wardle suffering a hamstring injury, they were now down to just 12 players. City struggled to get anything going in the second half and consequently it was the visitors that struck first, extending their lead with a deflection at the far post from a penalty corner. Pushing for a goal to get them back in the game, City were caught on the break and were punished. 4-1 Wapping. City then conceded a penalty stroke which was saved by Alistair Cooke. In fairness to City they kept their heads up and finished the game creating some good chances but couldn’t quite add the finishing touches to some good passages of play. FT City 1-4 Wapping Overall a disappointing result again for City, however, there are plenty of positives which they can take into their next game against league leaders West Herts 1’s.

The second half was a little different from the first, Norwich became their own worst enemy losing three players to cards within 5 mins. IES managed to snatch one more goal during this time, though the remaining players managed this part of the game superbly, defending well, and running down the clock till the rest of the players were allowed back on the pitch. Despite that second goal, Norwich managed to score 4 more goals before the final whistle. Cameron Cooke scoring 4 in total and winning himself man of the match. City's 1s were looking to make gain their first win of this seasons campaign. Facing an East London side which has been bolstered following their loss to Norwich in the Plum preseason tournament. It took some resolute play to ensure that their early efforts did not lead to a goal for the away team. Despite some early struggles, City won a penalty corner on their first effort in the East London Defensive circle and Cameron Cooke blazed home a dragflick into the bottom corner. This goal seemed to wobble a physical and competitive East London side and only a few minutes later Cameron Cooke was on hand to tap home a neat finish past the keeper at the near post. 2-0 city at the break. The second half saw a change in momentum with city finding more and more space, coming close on many occasions. MENS 1ST XI - 24/08/2019 VS SAFFRON WALDEN (A) TEAM: Mens 1st XI DATE: 24/08/2019 FIXTURE: Mens 1st XI VS 24/08/2019 HEADLINE: Tough Lessons Learnt in First Outing for new team! LEAGUE: EAST PREMIER DIVISION A VENUE: Harleston HC RESULT: 4-1 Loss REPORT: In City's Mens 1s first outing of the new season, City welcomed a hatful of new players into the team giving debuts to Harry Cresswell, Felix Broadway, Fred Anthony, Ben Nkrumah, Jack Luther as well as Joe Roy and Jonty Black who are both Under 15s. With City playing a new formation under new leadership of Iain Martin and Joe Cowan it was always going to be a tough game first up against a fully strengthened Saffron Walden 1st XI, and so it proved with City 4-0 down after 9 minutes. However once Jack Luther set up Pete Morgan for Citys first goal of the season things turned a lot more positive. City started to settle in to the formation as it finished 4-1 at half time. Into the second half City again began to gel well in the new formation and started to play some excellent hockey with some excellent chances created. No goals were scored in the second half but a lot of lessons learned and City can be pleased in how they came back from their early set backs.
