W (1-0) 14/04/2018 - W1 vs Colchester (H / L) NORWICH CITY 1S PROMOTED BACK TO EAST PREM WITH LAST GAME OF THE SEASON |
---|
WOMENS 1ST XI - 14/04/2018 VS COLCHESTER (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 14/04/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 14/04/2018 HEADLINE: Norwich City 1s promoted back to East Prem with last game of the season LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-0 REPORT: The conclusion of the Division 1 North 2017/2018 season finally came after several weeks of postponements due to bad weather. It was all to play for for Norwich City as a win against Colchester would ensure they gained promotion back into the East Prem league. With a rousing team talk and several pre match what’s app messages from Coach Pies Norwich were chomping at the bit to get the only result they wanted, a win, 3 points and the promotion. Could the girls put this long season to bed and prove that they could play some great hockey as they so often had throughout the season? From the whistle City put pressure on Colchester with some great runs from Captain Jo Staines and Alice Gill working tirelessly in midfield. They were rewarded after 10 minutes when Jo made a strong pass across the D to a waiting Abbie Ingham who slotted the ball away calmly to make it 1-0 to City. Colchester put up a good fight and were not going to make it easy for Norwich. They came back strong with the some good work through the centre of the pitch causing trouble for Norwich’s defence. Colchester were gifted with some short corners but could not capitalize with City’s keeper Rosie Valentine keeping things under control. As the first half came to an end City began to panic making some unnecessary mistakes. They had more attacking chances with great work between the midfield and forward lines resulting in a slick reverse stick sweep by Rachel Mayne in front of goal that just passed the post. City started the second half strongly having the majority of possession however it was to be a nervous 35 minutes as each side battled on trying to get a result. There were some great linking plays and skill shown by the whole City side. Working together from the defensive unit of Harriet Johnson, Ellie Pitcher, Sally Rose, Foungy Chung and Suzy Mitchell to the hard working midfielders, Alice Gill, Rachel Mayne, Ange Hindle and Jo Staines connecting well with the fast moving forward line of Ellie Brine, Emily Francis, Abbie Ingham and Micayla Toothill. City spent most of the second half camped in Colchester’s half of the pitch. They worked tirelessly but could not add anything more to the score sheet despite a handful of short corners and play around the D. As the time ticked away City kept their composure and maintained possession, there were some well timed tackles and interceptions from player of the match Suzy Mitchell but overall it was a solid team performance. End result 1-0 win and a well deserved 2nd place finish in the league (City only losing 2 games all season) as well as the cherry on the top, promotion. Well done to the entire squad and many thanks to our coaching team. Onwards and upwards we go! POM - Suzy Mitchell

WOMENS 1ST XI - 25/03/2018 VS LINDUM (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 25/03/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 25/03/2018 HEADLINE: Norwich City Womens progress to the England Hockey Cup semi finals LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: TRF RESULT: 1-0 REPORT: Norwich City womens welcomed Lindum HC to TRF for their quarter finals clash last Sunday. Norwich were feeling pumped and raring to go following a successful run so far in their cup campaign. With the end of the season yet to finish and with a chance of promotion back to East Prem within City’s grasp coach Pies and the squad were clear on their aims. From the whistle City had the majority of the possession making some great runs and linking play between the midfield and forward lines whilst goal keeper Summer’s defensive unit of Fongy, Dani, Flick, Harriet and Suzy kept Lindums occasional break aways at bay. After 15 minutes of play and some great team work around Lindums D Micayla stepped up and with her second touch of the match calmly slotted the ball away, 1-0. Lindum kept their attacks coming and had several short corners before half time but to no avail. The second half was a nervous one with continued hard work from the midfielders of Jo, Alice, Abbie, Georgia and Micayla. There were several opportunities on goal made by the forward line of Oli, Milly, Krystal and Ellie however Lindum’s keeper kept them from adding to the score sheet. The last 10 minutes were gritty with both teams wanting to get a result. Lindum made several counter attacks resulting in a flurry of short corners but none were successful thanks to some well timed clearances from City’s defence. Final score 1-0 to City. Norwich now advance to the semi finals to face Oxford HC Womens. Can they go all the way to the final? Anything is possible! POM - Suzy Mitchell

W (2-0) 10/03/2018 - W1 vs Dereham 1 (A / L) THE LADIES 1S WIN THE DEREHAM DERBY |
---|
LADIES 1ST XI - 10/03/2018 VS DEREHAM 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 10/03/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 10/03/2018 HEADLINE: The Womens 1s win the Dereham derby LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: Dereham RESULT: 2-0 REPORT: As the season draws to a close the womens 1st team had an upper table clash against old enemies, Dereham. After playing them twice already this season (a win and a draw) both teams were out for blood. After a quick warm up City were raring to go and had a strong start, linking passes across the pitch through Ange in the middle and looking strong on the wings with both Jo and Alice running up and down the pitch relentlessly. The forward line pressed high and won a short corner, although slightly improvised, the ball slipped to the right to Jo who shot it across the face of goal to a hungry Fong on the left post, she put it away effortlessly and City took the lead. Unfortunately for Fongy her celebrations didn’t last long, Dereham came back hard and won a short corner, Fong ran out hard but an attackers stick hit Fong’s chin drawing blood (at least she left her mark on Dereham’s pitch). Flic dropped to centre back with Sally and made a formidable defence with Rachel and Ellie P either side, however City struggled to play the ball out and Dereham made strong attacks forcing POTM Summer to make some crucial saves including a dive across the line. The half-time whistle came with relief as City re-grouped and took a breath, they were ready for the second half. They started the second half well, with a surprise appearance at central defence for Jo leading from the back. The wing play from Rachel, Alice and Emily on the right and Ellie P, Ellie B and Oli on the left was unstoppable and Abs holding the middle. Dereham struggled to cope and after a scramble in the ‘D’ City won another short corner. It went to Emily initially who slipped it to Ellie B on the p-spot who put it away, City were taking charge of the game but Dereham hadn’t given up yet. They pushed hard but City fought back, Dereham had numerous amounts of short corners but City’s short corner defence let loose with Summer making more saves, Dereham couldn’t do anything about it. The opposition grew tired and City sprung whilst they had the chance winning a short corner and subsequently a penalty flick, although we didn’t convert it, Dereham’s morale dropped and we owned the rest of the game. A well deserved win as the Womens 1s sit comfortably in 3rd place. POM - Summer Haylock.

W (4-1) 24/02/2018 - W1 vs St Ives 1 (A / L) |

LADIES 1ST XI - 24/02/2018 VS ST IVES 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 24/02/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 24/02/2018 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: Norwich started the game with pace and determination, storming the game from the off. Harriet Johnson and Ellie Pitcher made great attacks down the width creating space and opportunities for Norwich City. Great runs in midfield from Jocasta Staines and Alice Gill set up City’s first goal. With a swift run down the left, Alice slipped the ball to Olivia Williams in the D who slotted it in with a slick reverse shot. The game began to get even more exciting with Krystal Bishop narrowly missing the top left corner and a cross bar shot from Olivia Williams. But Bishop got her glorious goal after a great tackle and counter attack from Ellie Pitcher gave Krystal the space to wind up and smash the ball into the bottom left. Emily Francis and Abbie Ingham linked together seamlessly upfront, constantly making the goalkeeper’s life very difficult. But Summer Haylock showed her how it was done, with great clearances and crucial chat from the back. Even after Norwich had dominated the entire first half a quick attack from the opposition left City exposed and a lucky goal was conceded. City got their game faces on and worked relentlessly until half time came to give them a well earned break. As the second half started, countless tackles from Fongy Chung and Micayla Tootill kept St Ives from causing danger, while Abbie Ingham worked tirelessly D to D as City’s new utility player. Norwich City’s third goal came from a great free hit won by Jo Staines and a slip into the D which was deflected by Ellie Brine towards Olivia Williams who was ready on the post to tap in. Rachel Mayne and Angela Hindle won the ball time and time again and with great distribution created many chances for City. But City’s final goal came from a loose ball upfront leaving Ellie Brine with a 1v1 with less than a minute remaining. A penalty flick was won and stylishly slotted in by Micayla, hitting the backboard for the fourth and final time. Final score 4-1.

D (1-1) 17/02/2018 - W1 vs Bedford 2 (A / L) MISSED OPPORTUNITIES PREVENT CITY PUTTING BEDFORD TO BED! |
---|
LADIES 1ST XI - 17/02/2018 VS BEDFORD 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 17/02/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 17/02/2018 HEADLINE: Missed opportunities prevent city putting Bedford to bed! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: Bedford HC RESULT: 1-1 REPORT: City in good spirits after a double win last week and descent weather finally (no snow or rain). City knew this would be a challenging match due to both teams battling for second place in the league. City started brightly not only in their hockey skills but in their new sunflower yellow playing shirts (thank you club and sponsors). First 10 minutes were pretty even with both teams sharing position and opportunities in the D. City were confident in transferring the ball around the back between Danni, fongy, Harriet and flic in order to create spaces up the wings. This lead to accurate passing by the midfield of Ange, Jo, Alice and Abbie up to Bedford’s 23, but unfortunately couldn’t find the final ball to the forwards in the D. All in all the first half was pretty average in comparison to previous weeks. Half time 0-0. After a slow first half and a kick up the arse team talk by Pies, city knew they had to step up a gear if they wanted to win this match. City started the second half much better than they finished the first, defending and attacking as a unit. This lead to only their third short corner of the match. City decided to keep things simple with a straight strike by krystal at the top of the D. Krystal did not disappoint with an unstoppable shot into the left bottom corner. City 1-0. Bedford stepped up a gear. Short corner straight after our goal. A well worked routine Bedford which resulted in another short corner which subsequently saved off the line by Micayla. After some questionable decisions going against city, lead to two city players evening green carded. Leading to Bedford taking this opportunity and scoring on their umpteenth short corner. With the clock ticking down both teams pressed for a winner and the game become very physical. The forward line of krystal , Emily, Oli and Ellie used their skill and pace to produce several opportunities but were unable to convert successfully. In the dying minutes ‘Micayla was possessed by lucifer himself’ (Bishop, 2018) intercepted a ball then bypassed several players and entered the D. However unluckily miss-hit her shot on goal. Whistle finally blew after an intense and physical match with both teams taking a point. Excellent work rate throughout the whole team but a special shout out to Abbie for playing excellent hockey in a new midfield role and to the defence and goalie summer for putting their bodies on the line (e.g. definitely fongy) throughout the match. Final score 1-1. POTM Micayla Tootill Match report co-written by Tootill and Bishop.

W (2-1) 11/02/2018 - W1 vs Loughborough Students 2 (A / EH WKO+4) DOUBLE WIN WEEKEND! |
---|
LADIES 1ST XI - 11/02/2018 VS LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 11/02/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 11/02/2018 HEADLINE: DOUBLE WIN WEEKEND! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: Loughborough RESULT: win, 2-1 REPORT: On the back of an impressive 5-0 win on Saturday against UEA we were keen to make it a double win weekend. After a long journey to Loughborough we took a few minutes longer than usual to get our warm up going and match ready. We were also greeted with a sudden onset of snow and an icy wind, followed by more snow showers during the rest of the game. We started the game well with excellent link up play between the lines and carrying in the midfield from Jo, Alice, Georgia and Flic. The forward line had many great chances with Krystal and Micayla firing a few with pace. A goal shortly came when Oli transferred the balk around the back to Flic who passed it through to Krystal. Krystal got round a defender and then passed it to Oli who then scored. This made us 1-0 up relatively early on in the game. A short corner goal from Loughborough made us finish the first half 1-1. We went into the second half with as much energy as the first and again creating many chances. Loughborough came back but our solid defending by Harriet, Fong, Danni and Ellie Pitcher kept their chances at bay. With more exceptional attacking play from everyone on the pitch and some good base line runs by Milly and Ellie Brine we won a short corner. The ball was dragged out to Alice who slipped it left to Flic. Flic slapped the ball at goal and a touch by Fong sent it in. This meant we finished the game 2-1 and are now through to the quarter finals and are in the final 8 of the England Hockey Cup. A special mention should go to our supporters who came with us, ran the bench, helped direct our half time talk and shouted encouragement throughout the game.

W (5-0) 10/02/2018 - W1 vs UEA (H / L) THE START OF SOMETHING GOOD... |

LADIES 1ST XI - 10/02/2018 VS UEA (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 10/02/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 10/02/2018 HEADLINE: The start of something good... LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: TRF RESULT: 5-0 REPORT: I’m always so excited to receive player of the match until I realise that I have to write the match report, and I can’t remember what happened! (And with a Sunday cup match to prepare for I got a bit distracted from writing it, so apologies that it’s late!) Here are some parts that I do remember... We had a punchy speech from Pies to kick us off, asking us to try to do what he’s been asking us to do all season! The weather was rotten! It was cold, it was windy and it rained! Krystal scored a blinder of an early goal, great start, one nil up! At half time we were two - nil up. The second half was equally rotten weather, but a couple of the M1s did venture out under their brollies to give us a cheer! A short corner routine was blocked by a UEA defenders foot on the line, and a flick was awarded... and smashed into the bottom left corner by none other than Flic. Summer didn’t have a lot to do. Goal scorers were, Flic (x2), Oli, Krystal and Alice. Great runs, interceptions, and skills from all players; defence, midfield and forwards. A great stint was put in at midfield by Abbie. The full squad of 16 put in a gutsy performance and we ended the game 5-0. Then we took some great team pics afterwards and went in to watch England beat Wales! Two great results, little did we know it was soon to be 3! Cheers, Jo

L (1-3) 03/02/2018 - W1 vs Harleston Magpies 2 (A / L) WE WANTED A DRAW! |

LADIES 1ST XI - 03/02/2018 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 2 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 03/02/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 03/02/2018 HEADLINE: We Wanted A Draw! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: HARLESTON RESULT: LOST 1-3 REPORT: NC Womens 1s travelled to runaway league leaders Magpies and expected a competitive game after narrowly losing the reverse fixture 2-3. Being the underdogs, NC took the game to Magpies and played free flowing hockey with the midfield trio of Angela Hindle, Rachel Mayne and Jo Staines working hard to win the ball to feed the forwards. Magpies were a constant threat and the back line of Fong Chung, Harriet Johnson, Ellie Pitcher and Sally Rose had to be organised and on constant alert to intercept balls and link up with the midfield. After a sustained period of pressure, Magpies found a foot in the D and were first to the rebound after Summer Haylock in the NC goal saved the first shot. Scoreline 1-0. NC were not disheartened and the forward line of Krystal Bishop, Ellie Brine and Olivia Williams were creating chances in the opposition D but couldn’t quite find the target. A strong run by Micayla Tootill, leaving defenders bamboozled and on the floor with her silky skills, lead to NC’s first short corner of the game. The initial short corner was like ping ball that found another defender’s foot, the following short corner, NC used a new routine and although the initial shot was saved, clever play by Hindle found Chung to deflect the ball past the outstretched foot of the goalkeeper. Scoreline 1-1. Magpies were on the back foot with Abbie Ingham and Emily Francis running at defenders and causing havoc in the opposition 23m. However, Magpies were well organised and managed to repel the attacks. Half-time stayed 1-1. The second half started evenly and tackles became stronger and more errant, forcing the umpires to issue cards to both sides. Magpies won another short corner and although things went awry at the top of the D, they regrouped and sent the ball towards goal, a brave dive at the loose ball by a forward in front of the NC keeper found the back of the net. Scoreline 2-1. NC threw everything at Magpies to find the equaliser and Coach Pies took off a defender to play with an extra forward for the last 10 minutes. However, an aerial found a fast running Magpies forward and after engaging the last defender, the ball was slipped to the free forward at the P spot who just couldn’t miss. The scoreline finished 3-1 and was rather flattering considering the end to end competitive game. A shout out to Dani Sizer who was injured in the first half and became the away team’s cheerleader versus a home crowd of 100!

W (4-0) 20/01/2018 - W1 vs Lowestoft Womens 1 (H / L) |

LADIES 1ST XI - 20/01/2018 VS LOWESTOFT LADIES 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 20/01/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 20/01/2018 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: A very frosty morning threatened postponement for many games at TRF, however the forever keen Norwich City Womens 1s did not let that dampen their spirits. They started the game against Lowestoft Womens 1s with energy and commitment from the off, eager to get back to winning ways. Great work rate and a well rehearsed press put constant pressure on Lowestoft's defence and it was Felicity Williams who managed to slot away City's first well deserved goal. Continuous attacks from Olivia Williams and Emily Francis resulted in many chances for the yellows, however great saves from the opposing keeper kept the score low in the first half. After half time, great attacking line runs from Harriet Johnson and Ellie Pitcher created promising chances for City but it was a counter attack that led to city's next triumph. Silky skills from Jocasta Staines and a deflection in the D from Ellie Brine led the ball nicely to Krystal Bishop who, with a powerful strike into the bottom left corner, put away City's second goal. Slick transfers from Sally Rose and Fong Chung in defence created the space Norwich needed to push forward. Despite having a limited amount of attacking short corners City used a well drilled routine, and Micayla Tootill deflected the ball into the net. City 3 - Lowestoft 0. Brilliant team work in the middle from Rachel Mayne and Alice Gill kept city on top. Despite being a player down, City were dominating and Ange Hindle slid a great ball into the D to Micayla who skilfully turned gaining space to smash the ball, scoring herself her second goal of the day. Two questionable green cards left Norwich with 9 players but they worked hard to defend and Lowestoft's endless attempts to clear the ball were intercepted. Until the end City remained on form, final result 4-0.

D (2-2) 13/01/2018 - W1 vs Wisbech Town 1 (A / L) NC DRAW UNPRECEDENTED 5TH GAME IN A ROW. |

LADIES 1ST XI - 13/01/2018 VS WISBECH TOWN 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 13/01/2018 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 13/01/2018 HEADLINE: NC draw unprecedented 5th game in a row. LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: Wisbech RESULT: 2-2 REPORT: NC L1s travelled to Wisbech for their 3rd meeting this season and were hoping for another win to kick start a stuttering season after a run of 4 draws. With a period of sustained pressure in the Wisbech 23m, NC won their first short corner of the game. After having her initial strike well saved by the keeper, the ball rebounded straight back to Krystal Bishop and she unleashed a thunderbolt of a strike into the top corner of the goal. 0-1 to NC. The midfield trio of Alice Gill, Angela Hindle and Jo Staines worked hard to control of the midfield. Linking up well with the forwards and working back when the ball was lost. Ellie Pitcher made a welcomed return to 1st team action and was instrumental in creating space for cross field switches with fellow defenders Pui Chung, Harriet Johnson and Dani Sizer. After winning the ball in our own half, a long ball by Micayla Tootill found Abbie Ingham who skilfully eliminated the lone centre back, which allowed Olivia Williams to draw the keeper and pass square for Ellie Brine for a simple finish. 0-2 to NC at half time. Wisbech started the 2nd half strongly, using the pitch to their advantage as NC struggled to control the ball. Summer Haylock in goal made some important saves to keep the home side at bay. A melee in the D led to the home side being awarded their 1st short corner. NC was unlucky to concede with the strike making various deflections before deceiving Summer and trickling across the goal line. Score 1-2. Play continued end to end, with both sides making chances. However, with the ball lost at the half way line, a speculative long pass found a high forward unmarked at the P spot to score the equaliser. Score 2-2. NC upped their game to avoid another draw and were camped in the opposition 23m and won a short corner just before the final whistle. However, with Micayla’s reverse shot on goal, a massive stick on stick noise was adjudged by the umpire to be a strike on the defensive stick and the game finished in confusion. NC have now drawn an unprecedented 5 games in a row. POTM went to Pui Chung

LADIES 1ST XI - 03/12/2017 VS SPALDING (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 03/12/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 03/12/2017 HEADLINE: Wembley here we come LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: Home RESULT: 5-0 Win REPORT: After the doom and despair of a disappointing trip to Colchester yesterday, Coach Pies had been forced into retreat somewhere deep in the French alps with only a beer to console him. Not to worry though. As a full squad of 16 Norwich City Womens turned up to take on Spalding in the cup, his mighty understudy awaited, lager in hand, tactics carefully prepped. Norwich started strongly moving the ball around the pitch well with the defence pair of Danny (x2) and Fongy shutting down any Spalding attacks. It wasn’t long before Krystal battered a ball goalwards. The world turned to celebrate, but no backboard clatter was heard as the Spalding keeper got a crafty left foot in the way. Minutes later Flic found herself in the D. Surely the opener, but this time a crafty right foot kept the clean sheet. Then came Ellie and Jo and Alice and Abbie and Mic but whether it a head, shoulder, knee or toe in the way Norwich couldn’t open the scoring. Fortunately perseverance does pay off (Sunday life lesson #1) and as the first half drew to a close Oli slipped a nifty half volley into the near post. The deadlock was finally broken. Soon after Ellie confused the whole pitch with a lovely pass slid to the back post. It was missed by all of City, but somehow all of Spalding too and the ball trickled over the goal line. The 3rd goal came from Micayla with a well worked dog leg short corner that almost looked like we practiced them. Let’s not talk about the preceding 15. Then came the real magic of the day with a strong midfield run into the D from myself finished with a strike into the bottom corner. Krystal must have been watching because as the sun set on this fabulous game she put away our last short corner making the final score 5 – 0. Role on the next round, did someone say quarter finals? Long may the quest to Wembley continue.

Unhelped by challenging conditions from a low lying sun, City had a shakey first half. City scored first with a goal from Krystal bishop when she carried the ball wide and neatly put it away into the corner. Colchester scored twice more before half time from short corner pieces, and City were unable to answer with a goal of their own, going into half time 2-1 down, the first time City have gone into the break chasing the game. After a rousing talk from coach Pies City came out more determined in the second half and valiantly defended a number of penalty corners from Colchester managed to win. City scored a second goal from Harriet Johnson who relieved a ball from Felicity Williams from the T spot to take a strike and slot the ball into the far corner. Final score 2-2 with POM going to Harriet Johnson.

With most of the play stuck in the midfield, neither team were able to score in the first half, however there were a few opportunities at either end which saw both goal keepers see off the attempts made. The second half saw much of the same, but a scuffle in the Norwich’s defending D led to a short corner for Dereham. The first shot saved by Summer Haylock, fell to a Dereham player and a pass to their player on the post gave the opportunity to pop it into the goal. Although the goal came very late in the second half, Norwich knew that there was still time to get back into the game and pushed hard in the opposing half. Having beaten the defence Norwich City’s Micayla Toothill belted home an incredible shot from the top of the D to bring the score level just a few minutes before the end of the match. POTM went to Alice Gill for her effortless passing and great work rate.

LADIES 1ST XI - 18/11/2017 VS NEWMARKET 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 18/11/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 18/11/2017 HEADLINE: A journey to the races, however, city struggled to get out of their gate. LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: Newmarket RESULT: 1-1 Draw REPORT: The 1st half was frustrating for city as we struggled to keep possession, and Newmarket used that to their advantage attacking our circle repeatedly. City didn't give up and kept fighting, with plenty of chances to score, however, at half time the score was still a disappointing 0-0. After a stern talking to from Pies, we went into the second half with renewed determination to pick up our game. Fongy and Sally continued to pick up balls from the back, with some good leading runs from the midfield allowing us to build an attack. But we continued to struggle to find that final pass and to penetrate their D. Eight minutes before the final whistle City were caught on the back foot, and an unlucky deflection from our defender meant that Newmarket went 1 up. The goal shook City and thankfully woke us up a bit. Then came some fast leads into the corners by the wingers and inners, our chance was coming. With about 5 minutes to go a short corner was won after a counterattack from City, this was our chance to equalise. A fast drag out to the top of the D and a slick slip to Micayla on the right gave her the time to strike the ball powerfully onto the keeper, where Fongy was waiting and finished the play, putting the ball into the goal. Not one of Cities finest performances, but the womens worked extremely hard to get out 1 point. Final Score, Newmarket 1 City 1. Player of the Match : Alice Gill.

Most of Norwich’s attack’s came down the left with lots of dominant possession, it was a super early ball into the ‘d’ from the left by Felicity Williams who found Olivia Williams who majestically deflected the ball into the far corner of the goal to make it 1-0. Norwich continued to dominate and it wasn’t long before another combination from the Williams sisters made it 2-0 from a very well worked short corner. Dereham started to come more into the game and started to have more joy in the Norwich half. Shortly before half time Dereham scored a goal that was to give them renewed enthusiasm going into the break. Half time Dereham 1 Norwich 2. The second half was very similar to the first half,Norwich continued to dominate possession from Rachel Mayne, Jocasta Staines and The Gill sisters but continued to be thwarted by a stubborn Dereham defence. Dereham had the odd foray into the Norwich half but never really threatened the goal because of a very well organised Norwich defence and solid tackles from Danni Garwood and Fongy. Halfway through the second half Norwich’s man of the match sealed victory with an excellent shot in the corner of the goal. City continued to to put the pressure on with some great runs from Ellie Brine, Micayla Tootil, Olivia Williams and Emily Francis. Dereham huffed and puffed but could not make any headway as Norwich were by far the better team on the day and handled the conditions better. Final score Dereham 1 Norwich 3.

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: Home. RESULT: 4-0 Win REPORT: The Womens 1s played St Ives at home on Saturday. The first goal came from Krystal Bishop, who drifted right drawing the keeper and then fired the ball into the far corner. The defensive unit worked hard to close out and attacks from St Ives and at half time the score was 1-0. A rallying half time talk from Pies, put the fire back in our bellies. The second goal came after Jo drove the D beating the St Ives defenders before crossing the ball to Krystal who slapped the ball into the goal. The third goal came from a D-D break, Emily passed to Krystal who pulled the ball back and passed it to Flic who lifted the ball into the goal. Our fourth and final goal came from Suze who after injecting the short corner ran in and got the ball back on the post, to defect the ball in. Nominations for Player of the match were given to Ellie and Oli for their great running up front. Krystal for her work in the D. Ange and Rachel for their hard work in the midfield and it was won this week by skipper Jo Staines for her work rate and assist. LADIES 1ST XI - 04/11/2017 VS UEA (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 04/11/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 04/11/2017 HEADLINE: Norwich City womens 1s return to winning ways LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: UEA RESULT: 7-1 REPORT: The womens 1s headed to UEA on a very soggy Saturday. Dressed up in some snazzy new kit the squad looked professional, pumped and ready to prove their top of the league title with a worthy performance against bottom of the table UEA. With an encouraging team talk from Coach Pies (remember the 3 Ps - possession, percentages and passes) the team knew they had to go out and play their own game. The womens took a little time to settle into their stride whilst UEA were quick to drive forward putting pressure on City’s midfield and defence. However goalkeeper Summer Haylock kept calm and cleared shots on goal. Despite UEA gaining an early short corner City’s defence were able to clear away the danger handing back possession to the midfield and forwards. With turn over being one of City’s strongest assets the pressure was quickly piled on UEA and with some brilliant linking passes from the midfielders of Jo Staines, Micayla Tootill, Angela Hindle and Rachel Mayne up the pitch this allowed Abbie Ingham to decisively slot away City’s first goal. This was the positive change City needed and from then on they were in control of the game. With solid defending from Felicity Williams, Dani Sizer, Fongy Chung, Suzy Mitchell and Harriet Johnson UEA’s advancing attacks were kept at bay allowing City’s midfield to make some great passes linking up well with the forward line of Oli Williams, Ellie Brine, Emily Francis, Abbie Ingham and Krystal Bishop. This fast flowing hockey meant the goals continued to come with Krystal (scored 13 goals in 7 games) Bishop scoring 2 perfectly placed reverse stick shots from tight angles. Abbie was also successful again with a well worked goal assisted from the hardworking midfield. City went into half time 4-0 up. The half time talk focused on tweaks to be made and maintaining a pumped up team effort sometimes lacking in previous performances. City did not disappoint and as the rain continued to fall City continued their goal fest. UEA put up a gritty performance, continuing to drive forward hard and despite some well timed interceptions and good 50/50 wins by City’s defence UEA slipped through and scored. City did not let this effect their slick team performance, they continued their positive press with further goals coming from Emily Francis using her quick reactions in front of goal and from the top of the D to slot away 2. This left just enough time for 1 last reverse stick shot from Krystal finishing the match 7-1. A dominant win by City. Bring on St Ives at home next week! POM - Suzy Mitchell

L (2-3) 28/10/2017 - W1 vs Harleston Magpies 2 (H / L) LATE GOAL FROM MAGPIES BREAKS CITY’S UNDEFEATED RUN. |
---|
LADIES 1ST XI - 28/10/2017 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 28/10/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 28/10/2017 HEADLINE: Late goal from Magpies breaks City’s undefeated run. LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: TRF, Norwich City HC RESULT: Norwich City 2 – Harleston Magpies 3 REPORT: Norwich City Womens 1’s welcomed Harleston Magpies 2’s to the TRF in a highly anticipated match due to both teams having won all of their league games so far. City knew that if they played their attacking, free flowing hockey then they had a good chance of winning. City started brightly and dominated possession in the first ten minutes, putting Magpies defence under pressure from both wings. Some slick interplay down the right, led to Oli executing a well timed pass to Krystal and a one-on-one with the goalie, which she coolly dispatched on her reverse to give City the deserved lead. This caused Magpies to step up a gear and play very assertive hockey in City’s half. The defensive unit of Summer, Sally, Suzy, Harriet, Dani and Fongy stood strong and absorbed many of the Magpies attacks. Yet, City struggled when trying to play their way out of their half, with panicked and rushed passes being easily intercepted by Magpie players. A Magpies injury resulted in a much needed break and team talk with coach Pies. Simple and accurate hockey was needed if we were going into half time in a strong and winning position. Once play resumed, City upped the tempo and were passing more consistently and were unfortunate when a Magpies free hit and lapse in judgment resulted in a goal. Goalie Summer pulled off some stunning saves to keep the score at 1-1 for half time. City started the second half strong with their midfield line of Jo, Micayla, Ange and Flic working tirelessly up and down the pitch, turning defence into attack. However, with some calls unluckily going against City, Magpies scored from one of the several penalty corners they gained. This was the motivation City needed to play penetrative attacking hockey. The momentum swung in City’s favour and an excellent passage of play down the left wing and into the Magpies D where Krystal lobbed the goalie to make it two a piece. With the clock ticking down, both teams pressed for a winner. The forward line of Emily, Oli, Ellie, Abbie and Krystal used their skill and pace to produce some excellent runs down both wings, one which finally resulted in City’s first penalty corner. Magpies defended well and quickly had several penalty corners of their own. After initially successfully defending numerous of Magpies short corner routines in a row, City were unlucky to concede one with five minutes to go. City worked vigorously in the last five to find an equaliser but it was not to be. City will hopefully bounce back from this defeat with next weeks away match against UEA. Final score 2 -3, POTM went to Krystal Bishop.

LADIES 1ST XI - 21/10/2017 VS WATTON 1 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 21/10/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI vs Watton 1 - 21/10/2017 HEADLINE: City and Storm Brian blow Watton away. LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: TRF, NORWICH CITY HC RESULT: NORWICH CITY 9, WATTON 3 REPORT: On Saturday 21st October, table-topping Norwich City 1s wanted to continue their great momentum against Watton. In front a full home crowd, city were full of confidence straight from the push back. Without delay City forced Watton onto the back foot. Flic Williams forthwith showcased her disguised slap, scoring two and assisting a beautifully worked short corner, finished with an agile deflection by Oli Williams. Despite the pressure, Watton struck on a quick counter attack, but City dominated possession soon after. The defensive unit of Summer Haylock, Suzy Mitchell, Sally Rose, Dani Sizer, Harriet Johnson, Flic Williams and Fongy ensured Watton attacks were cut short, allowing City to attack relentlessly. This saw Norwich convert two more, to the frustration of the Watton defence. Krystal Bishop opened her account with a calm finish. Emily Francis followed with a neat half-volley on her reverse. City finished the first half with a convincing 5-1 lead. A spurring team talk from Pies encouraged the team to continue commanding possession and see the game through for another victory. Watton started the second half with intent and hence managed to get a goal back. However, City continued their swift attacking play as Micayla Tootill, Rachel Mayne and captain, Jo Staines tore down the pitch. City managed to capitalise on this pressure as Krystal Bishop fired two home in quintessential fashion, rounding off her hat-rick. The City defence stood strong as they repeatedly interrupted the Watton play. Felicity Williams and Rachel Mayne time and time again picked out the forward line of Krystal Bishop, Abbie Ingham, Emily Francis and Oli Williams, who lead tirelessly. Sally Rose could have added to the scoring as Oli Williams won a penalty flic, shortly after Krystal Bishop hit the post. Sally left the goal keeper going the wrong way, but the ball hit the post (again!) and unfortunately ricocheted out the goal. Nonetheless, dynamic City managed to score again as Ange Hindle saw her hard work pay off, with a brilliantly placed shot into the bottom corner. However, Watton were persistent and City saw themselves concede again. Norwich responded turbulently, not letting the Watton defence rest. A deft piece of play up the left saw Krystal Bishop set up Abbie Ingham, as City reached nine. Another win for City sees them continue their threatening form as they look to pursue another win next week. POTM and match report written by Abbie Ingham.

LADIES 1ST XI - 14/10/2017 VS LOWESTOFT LADIES (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 14/10/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 14/10/2017 HEADLINE: Sunshine and sand in Lowestoft. LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: Lowestoft RESULT: 2-1 Win! REPORT: The Womens ones took on Lowestoft Womens away today. On arrival a rallying team talk from coach extraordinaire Matthew Pies Brine set out the game plan for the match ahead and Norwich were fired up to secure their fourth win of the season. The warmed up went well, with Norwich attempting to get used to the beachy pitch conditions, a stark contrast to their home pitch. Norwich had the first touch of the ball, and with the sun on their backs attacked from the start, winning a short corner early on. Unfortunately the first short corner routine, though well executed by Oli who fired the ball across the goal to Ellie for the deflection failed to cross the line. This was followed by another short corner powerfully struck by Micayla and deflected into the back of the goal, around Lowestoft's strong goalkeeper by Suze, to take the lead. An early lead from Norwich was soon equalled by Lowestoft. A quickly taken free hit caught Norwich unprepared and won them a short corner which they deflected in on the far post to score. The rest of the first half showed strong attack and movement off the ball from Norwich. Driving runs with the ball from Micayla and Fongy carried play forwards, but the Lowestoft defenders kept managing to cut out the final pass. Harriet and Dani kept up a high tempo taking quick side line balls and pressing forwards. The interplay between the full backs Suze and Sally helped to move the ball around the back effectively. Strong pressing in the attacking half against Lowestoft free hits, well organised by Ange, forced them to make errors and play some hit and hope style hockey. But Norwich had failed to achieve the allusive second goal when the half time whistle blew! The second half was sadly strewn with dangerous balls and head injuries were incurred by both teams. This proved particularly difficult for Lowestoft who where fielding a bare 11, but all bravely played on. Norwich maintained a relentless attack with shots fired in from all the forwards, Ellie, Oli, Krystal and Emily but Lowestoft's goalkeeper managed to smother these. Until Oli hounding the keeper after the initial save managed to release the ball to Krystal who skilfully created space and fired the ball home. Norwich were careful to keep possession in the final moments as the clock ran down, in the face of strong pressure on their defence especially Fongy who had faced some "hard" challenges earlier in the game. Final result, 2-1 win, player of the match went to Captain Jo Staines.

W (4-0) 08/10/2017 - W1 vs Wisbech Town 1 (A / EH WKO+1) DOUBLE WEEKEND WIN FOR CITY 1S |

LADIES 1ST XI - 08/10/2017 VS WISBECH TOWN 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 08/10/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 08/10/2017 HEADLINE: Double Weekend Win for City 1s LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: WISBECH RESULT: 4-0 (W) REPORT: An early Sunday morning saw Norwich City Womens 1s travelling to Wisbech for their first cup match of the season. After playing Wisbech already the day before with a strong 3-1 win, City were ready for round 2. Norwich started the first half with enthusiasm and commitment. Strong defensive work from Danni Garwood and Fong Chung kept Wisbech away from our goal and left Summer Haylock with a quiet game so far. Despite the effortless passing between Georgia Cleveland and Ella Gill through the middle of the pitch, the first half ended 0-0. A great half time pep talk from coach Matthew Brine aka Pies got City 1s pumped and determined to get the win they deserved. Abbie Ingham worked tirelessly, managing to win City their first short corner of the half. After a strong strike from Krystal Bishop, Ellie Brine managed to get on the rebound with a reverse sweep into the goal. City were 1-0 up and hungry for more with Emily Francis making vital runs upfront to create many more chances for City. Important communication from Summer Haylock allowed Dani Sizer and Emily Rash to continue to hassle Wisbech's forwards, helping to keep City's clean sheet. The team worked hard, despite everyone's tired legs from the day before, to win Norwich another short corner. With a clean slap from Olivia Williams, Ellie Brine got a cheeky deflection into the net. City's shorts were on fire and with yet another won, the score became 3-0 with a well worked routine, Ella Gill with the final touch hitting the backboard. Great pace and interceptions from Emily Rash helped City finish the half strongly, distributing the ball all the way from the back, to finally find Ellie on the P spot to put a reverse flick into the top of the net. A final well won short corner for Wisbech saw the last 10 seconds of the game but with great teamwork from Norwich's defence and keeper, they had no problem keeping the ball out of the net. Another great win for City, and on to the next round of the Cup.

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: TRF, NORWICH CITY HC RESULT: NORWICH CITY 3, WISBECH TOWN 1 REPORT: The Womens 1st Team took on Wisbech 1's on our home H20 pitch. The pre match warm up started with some sick old school tunes from Harriet Johnson getting the girls pumped and ready for their tuff match ahead! Wisbech won the toss and had first push back but from the first whistle City won the ball back and pressured Wisbech into their half with some good passing around the back from Harriet Johnson, Suzie Mitchell, Sally Rose and Felicity Williams, Williams was able to distribute the ball forwards to Krystal who won us our first short corner which narrowly missed Olivia Williams who was running onto the post. City continued to pressure and create some chances with quick passing and movement on the right from Harriet Johnson, Jo Staines and Olivia Williams. Wisbech defended well and fought hard and made their way into city's half and into the D winning a short corner. City defended it well with a good save from our keeper Summer Haylock but the defence gave away another short away which then lead to a goal leaving city 0-1 down. City worked hard and passed the ball well getting it back into Wisbech's D and won a short corner which was put away by Felicity Williams putting the score to 1-1! City continued to dominate and with a cracking ball through to Krystal Bishop from our captain Jo Staines, Bishop found herself at a narrow angle with a one on one with the keeper and slotted the ball home giving city a 2-1 lead for half time! With a good team talk at half time from coach Pies the girls were ready for the second half. The second half started well for city. The solid defence who kept possession with some great transfers around the back from Danielle sizer, Sally Rose,Pui Foung Chung and Harriet Johnson and creative play in the middle from Angela Hindle, Micayla Tootil, Felicity Williams found the forwards Abbie Ingham, Olivia Williams, Ellie Brine and Emily Francis charging forwards creating multiple chances. A great piece of set play from Abbie Ingham and the Williams Sisters saw the ball in the net but was unfortunately disallowed. This made City even more determined and with some more awesome play and team work from the forwards, Ellie Brine set up Olivia Williams who finally managed to get her goal! City were 3-1 ahead! City continued to drive forwards with creative play and passing finishing the game with a solid 3-1 win! It was another great team performance with lots of positives! POTM went to Felicity Williams.

LADIES 1ST XI - 30/09/2017 VS ST NEOTS 1 (A) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 30/09/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 30/09/2017 HEADLINE: Goals Goals Goals! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: St Neots RESULT: 6-1 REPORT: The first away league match of the season saw NC Womens 1s take on newcomers to East 1N, St Neots Womens 1s. The game started evenly, with the defensive unit of Sally Rose, Pui Foung Chung, Harriet Johnson and Dani Sizer keep out the home side's forwards. City drove forward with the hardworking trio of Ellie Brine, Emily Francis and Olivia Williams, with Ellie Brine sweeping in for 1-0 lead. We held the game in midfield with Angela Hindle, Jocasta Staines and Emily Rash feeding the forwards or passing back for the defence to transfer across the pitch. However, the home side levelled after a few mistraps and slips in the defence, leaving a forward with time to finish past the outstretched kicker of goalkeeper Summer Haylock. Score line 1-1. This was a wake up call for City and we soon won our first short corner of the match, which was dispatched magnificently with an unstoppable deflection by the diving, "on your belly" Olivia Williams for a 2-1 lead. City increased the work rate and created havoc in the home side's D and like a ninja, Krystal Bishop scored with a trade mark acute angle finish to make the scoreline 3-1 leading into halftime. Coach Matthew Brine encouraged us to make more simple passes and to keep the transfers going to stretch out play, keep possession, play the percentages and pressurise the opposition when we don't have the ball. So not content with sitting back, City came out for the second half on a charge and a quick pass to Krystal on our 23m, saw her race to the opposite 23m, slip a textbook right hand pass to eliminate the defender to the supporting Olivia, although the shot was saved, Krystal was on hand to dispatch the rebound for a 4-1 lead. With momentum, City drove forward and with 3 consecutive stick tackles on the skilful Felicity Williams in the 23m saw a short corner awarded to City. Another slick routine, saw Micayla Tootill at full stretch to send another unstoppable deflection into the back of the net for a 5-1 score line. Late in the game, Abbie Ingham got amongst the goals with a deft deflection past the goalkeeper's outstretched kicker for a final score line of 6-1. It was another great team performance, with lots of well executed goals. POTM went to Pui Foung Chung for her interceptions and distribution around the back line.

W (4-0) 23/09/2017 - W1 vs Bedford 2 (H / L) BIG START TO A BIG SEASON. |

LADIES 1ST XI - 23/09/2017 VS BEDFORD 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 23/09/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 23/09/2017 HEADLINE: Big start to a big season. LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: TRF RESULT: 4-0 REPORT: The Womens 1st team took on Bedford 2’s in the first league game of the season, on home soil at TRF. With strict instructions from a slightly grumpy coach (men hey!) – the team were taking the game to Bedford and were stopping at nothing to start the year as they mean to go on. During the pre-match warm up, we exploited many of the team’s expertise – with a Yoga masterclass from Harriet Johnson, followed by an old-school game of stuck in the mud from Olivia Williams. We stepped on the pitch ready and raring to go. From the first whistle, we pressured Bedford into their own half, great build up play from Jo Staines, Micayla Tootil and Rachel Mayne resulted in chances for the forwards. One of which a great 1 on 1 with the keeper for Krystal, albeit kept out by a great diving save. Bedford made a few forays into the city half and were ably kept at bay with some crucially timed tackles from Harriet Johnson and Fong Chung. It was one of these great defensive moves that resulted in the first goal as quick movement of the ball meant Emily Francis could dink the ball past the last defender, into the D and smash it into the goal 1-0. The first half created a few more chances with short corners proving threatening but unfruitful. We moved into the second half and Bedford stepped up their game, defensively we remained strong with Danni Sizer, Suzie Mitchell and Felicity Williams switching the ball around the pitch with ease. Our second goal game following a counter attack, and Krystal Bishop found herself at a narrow angle, with a forceful ball towards the goal, a deflection meant we were 2-0 up. The third shortly followed as Angela Hindle, Felicity Williams and Ellie Brine linked up effortlessly down the left channel. A through ball found Krystal who rounded the keeper and swept home a quick ball past the onrushing defence 3-0. Bedford didn’t let this take the wind from their sails and with Sally Rose holding strong at the back, there was little options for Bedford. Summer Haylock was called upon a handful of times and clearly the ball with purpose to the midfield who were always ready to attack. Micayla Tootil linked up with Abbie Ingham through the right channel with Abbie outwitting the defence and the pace and drive from them created opportunities for Ellie Brine and Olivia Williams who continued to run tirelessly onto the posts. Felicity Williams, Ellie Brine and Emily Francis who had linked up well in the final 23 produced the final goal when Felicity Williams drove the D with intent, before firing an excellent reverse ball across the D for Ellie Brine to slap home 4-0. A fantastic and passionate start to the season, starting as we mean to go on.

LADIES 1ST XI - 26/08/2017 VS CAMBRIDGE CITY 2 (H) TEAM: Womens 1st XI DATE: 26/08/2017 FIXTURE: Womens 1st XI VS 26/08/2017 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 NORTH VENUE: TRF RESULT: 4:7 REPORT: The Womens 1st XI have started their preseason training in earnest following a challenging 2016/17 season. They welcome a new coach in Pies, a new captain in Jo and several new players. They faced Cambridge City for their first friendly match on Saturday, at home, in unforeseen bakingly hot weather conditions. In the first quarter Norwich at times lacked cohesion due to unfamiliar combinations not quite coming together across the pitch. The well drilled Cambridge side exploited this, attacked hard and took an early lead. The 2nd and 3rd quarters saw a much more exciting performance from Norwich with cracking team goals put away by Oli, Krystal, Micayla and Abbie. A sign of things to come... The 4th and final quarter saw fatigue set in for Norwich, and Cambridge again took their chances and pulled away with a flurry of goals. A special mention to Micayla, player of the match and a "new signing" for Norwich, who put in a consistent, tough and dynamic performance and claimed her first goal of the season. Although the end result was a loss, this does not reflect the hard work put in already by both players and coaches, and there are many positives to take from this early fixture.
