LADIES 3RD XI - 03/09/2016 VS DEREHAM 3 (H) TEAM: Womens 3rd XI DATE: 03/09/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 3rd XI VS 03/09/2016 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: Taverham RESULT: 5-1 (W) REPORT: City 3’s arrived at Taverham for an early morning game against the newly promoted City 4’s. The game started with the 4’s having much of the possession and looked very good going forward, the 3’s worked hard to defend and trying to push the ball out of the danger zone but when a loose ball was fumbled inside the D the 4’s seized their opportunity and planted it firmly in the back of the net. With this as a big wake up call for the 3’s we knew we had to up our game and started putting on more pressure, raising the intensity. The 3’s kept their heads and with some great movement from the back and midfield , Caroline Illing found herself in a good position on the right and swept the ball into the D where Mollae Scott was able to slot the ball past the keeper. With this goal city 3’s found their passion and started to pick up the pace and soon after Jenni Stanghan stopped the ball from a 16 yard hit, skilfully drove into the D where Caroline Illing popped the ball high into the net leaving the score 2-1 at half time. After a much needed team talk from Pies, in the second half City 3’s continued to put the pressure on. In the heat of the sun we kept our cool with some great passing round the back from Kirsten Aitken and Gemma Sargent who fed the ball up to Anna Brooke pushing forward to open up the game with some skilfully timed passes up to the attack. Olivia Greenway found herself in space when she received the ball inside the D and passed it across the goal to Emily Greenway who slipped the ball in over the line. The 4’s did not give up and continued to fight for the ball and managed to break into the D several times, but with some text book defending from Jenny Brine who stood her ground and some great tackles from Maddie Anthony they made it difficult for the opposition to form an attack. With more pressure from City 3’s the ball was played round the back and onto the stick of Mollae Scott who swept the ball into the left of the goal. Soon after City were awarded a short corner, the ball was pushed out hard by Olivia Greenway and received by Caroline Illing at the top of the D and slipped it under her arm to Maddie Anthony who, with a great strike, fired the ball into the back of the goal leaving the final scored 5-1. Huge credit to the effort and work rate of the 4’s who did not give up and gave us a good game and by no means made it easy! Excellent team effort from the 3’s which was shown in the POTM with many players receiving votes but it was awarded to Anna Brooke for her hard work and determination throughout the game.

The 2s started well and managed to score a well worked penalty corner goal with Duffy squaring the ball to Morgan for a neat finish at the far post, City held their lead until half time. With some strong saves from Steve Playford and a nice miss from skipper Hindle ensuring the scoreline remained at 1-0. In the 2nd half Magpies legend Toby Price walked through and scored two world class goals before a short corner added a third for Magpies as they looked to off killed the game shortly after half time but City hit back and scored through an excellent finish from Ben Plumb. At 3-2 City pressed for an equaliser and when Dan Cheesman was brought down going through on goal, skipper Hindle stepped up to convert the resulting flick. 3-3 Draw, great comeback roll on next week.

L (4-5) 03/09/2016 - M3 vs Norwich Dragons 2 (A / F) A VERY EVENLY MATCHED PRE-SEASON LOCAL DERBY SEE NORWICH CITY 3S PIPPED BY A LATE WINNER FROM NORWICH DRAGONS 2S |

MENS 3RD XI - 03/09/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 03/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 03/09/2016 HEADLINE: A very evenly matched pre-season local derby see Norwich City 3s pipped by a late winner from Norwich Dragons 2s LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: NORWICH DRAGONS, HEWITT SCHOOL RESULT: NORWICH CITY III 4 - NORWICH DRAGONS II 5 REPORT: A newly formed squad for Norwich City 3s, a mix of youth and experience emerging, led by a new captain in his first of a handful of pre-season friendly warm-up fixtures, took to the pitch against Norwich Dragons 2s, a team they left behind in Division 3NE when City were crowned champions and promoted to Division 2N (where they will encounter league games against Norwich Dragons 1s this season). The game was pretty much an even affair, both teams beginning to find their feet as you would normally expect in a pre-season friendly, both teams testing out each others goalkeepers and at times some scrappy play and some excellent, a real mix performance for both teams. City opened the scoring with a fine finish by Matthew Brine from close range, Felix Broadway firing a goal shortly after into the far bottom corner from the top of the circle, Dragons then getting a goal back just before half time. The second half very similar to the first, Dragons scoring an equaliser but shortly afterwards Matthew Brine scored his second when he managed to stretch to intercept a pass across the top of the circle and stepped in to rifle the shot high into the roof the net. City's lead short lived, Dragons scoring again with a great break away opportunity after City gifted away possession far too easily. City retook the lead again when Josh Bailey scored an outstanding solo goal, only to be null and voided when Dragons scored the equaliser again, a story of the game really. With minutes to go Dragons scored their winner, a game probably deserving a draw with both teams fairly balanced. A good pre-season shake down for both teams, City's man of the match was Matt Fretwell, a good hard faught midfield performance. Next week City entertain Harleston Magpies 3s at home, a final pre-season friendly before the league starts, and possibly a repeat close fixture following the hard battled out draw the end of the league last season when City secured the point they needed to be crowned league champions.

C (C-C) 03/09/2016 - M5 vs Dereham 3 (H / F) WHAT A DIFFERENCE A WEEK MAKES! |
---|
MENS 5TH XI - 03/09/2016 VS DEREHAM 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 03/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 03/09/2016 HEADLINE: What a difference a week makes! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: home RESULT: 5-0 (won) REPORT: What a difference a week makes (probably playing at home and not in Ipswich helps)! With a star studded 5th XI the game didn't get off to the best of starts as Newmarket dominated the early exchanges. The effervescent, Ady Marr offered a great outlet to the back line as his tireless running caused problem after problem for the opposition. David Broadway and Alex Merron worked the corners well as they set up Ady for the opening goal of the game. Newmarket came back and gave another scare as a disallowed short corner let City off the hook. It didn't take long for the team to capitalise as Hoops and Felix combined to set up Broadway senior for the second goal (possibly helped by a Newmarket size 11 boot). Newmarket continued to press and made life difficult for City, but youngsters, Tom Spencer and Jack Watling held firm at the back with some impressive interplay. It wasn't long before Ady found the back of the net again after some great closing down from Alex Merron caused another mistake at the back for Newmarket. Another one of the youngsters, Mark Bailey (!!), jumped in on the action with a skillful finish putting away a waist high pass to take the score to 4-0. With Newmarket's legs starting to go, the pressure continued to build as Ady grabbed his hatrick (the team are still waiting for their jug??). It was a well deserved victory, but the games continue to come thick and fast: Lowestoft Railway away next Saturday! Well done particularly to the youngsters in the team who really impressed. Hopefully our tallisman, Ash Bird will return next week!

MENS 6TH XI - 03/09/2016 VS DEREHAM 4 (A) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 03/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 03/09/2016 HEADLINE: Derek steals show LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Deraham RESULT:Lost 2-3 REPORT: Derek was the star of the show having recovered from a heart attack only 5 weeks previously he became man of the match for both teams as he displayed his defensive qualities for the Norwich team and then his versatility as right wing for Dereham. City's goals came from Woodward and Cushion as the oldest team in the league had their first run out of the season. Nice to see all the old faces back but amazing that they are all still playing year after year. A good pre-season friendly but a shame that the result went the wrong way.
