D (3-3) 18/03/2017 - M5 vs Norwich Dragons 4 (H / L) STAYING UP! |
---|
MENS 5TH XI - 18/03/2017 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 4 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 18/03/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 18/03/2017 HEADLINE: Staying Up! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE:Home RESULT:Drawn 3-3 REPORT: City came out of the blocks and quickly set about their task with a goal within the first few minutes by forward, Ady Marr. City pushed hard and were well led in the middle by inners Shaun and Ali C. After several short corners the ball fell well to Ady Marr for second goal. Dragons quickly responded with a goal of their own against the run of play. City quickly found their way again with some intricate passing before Ady completed his hatrick. City went into the half time break in complete control. It was clearly a game of two halves as City's legs started to go. Dragons started the more positively as their big hits through caused problems. Some quick feet enabled Dragons to score two quick goals to level the score. City pushed hard in the final quarter for the winning goal but it was not enough. The draw gave City 5s the much needed point to ensure 4NE hockey again next season. One final game remains against league champions, UEA 2s, but this should not phase the team after their victory earlier in the season. There is also the positivity around the return of next years captain's elect, Ash Bird after his lengthy absence due to planning his strategy for next year! Big things are expected for his return!! Well done to the whole team for the character shown today whilst staying in the league.

MENS 5TH XI - 04/03/2017 VS PELICANS 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 04/03/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 04/03/2017 HEADLINE: Difficult day in the office LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE:home RESULT:lost 1-2 REPORT: With a strong team on paper, City never quite delivered. Too many poor first touches cost possession in crucial parts of the pitch. After finding themselves 2-0 down, a well worked Geoff Spencer short corner was not enough to get any points. Looking after the ball is the key for next week!

W (4-3) 18/02/2017 - M5 vs Newmarket 2 (A / L) CARDS! |

MENS 5TH XI - 18/02/2017 VS NEWMARKET 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 18/02/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 18/02/2017 HEADLINE: Cards! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: Newmarket RESULT: won 3-4 REPORT: Not sure what really happened this game? After withholding early pressure from the opposition, Geoff Spencer put through Ben Chapman for the first goal of the game. Geoff was clearly struggling with his eyesight has he was soon complaining about the colour of the umpires' shirts - the two female umpires soon changed before Newmarket found their way back in. Geoff then linked well with Ben Chapman as Ben put away his second chance of th game. Within minutes Ash Bird was added to the goals with a well worked passing move. The game seemed calm at the break (apart from Geoff's green card for trying to help the umpires). The half time team talk "don't say anything to the umpires, we're ahead and don't need to upset them". Within seconds of the second half Geoff found himself having a longer break! Newmarket found their way back into the game taking it to 2-3 before David Broadway found the back of the net for 2-4. Newmarket then broke quickly before a coming together of two players on the half way line led to a red card and three yellows. With the game in danger of not being completed, Norwich knuckled down 8v8 and held on. With minutes remaining, Newmarket scored a late goal but it was not enough to change the result.

D (1-1) 11/02/2017 - M5 vs Bury St Edmunds 3 (H / L) TOUGH GAME |

MENS 5TH XI - 11/02/2017 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 11/02/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 11/02/2017 HEADLINE: Tough game LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE:home RESULT:1-1 REPORT: Tough game for the 5s who spent much of the time chasing the ball. Possession was given up too often by all which made the game much harder than it needed to be. After conceding early on, fox-in-the-box, Ash Bird tapped in the equaliser.

MENS 5TH XI - 04/02/2017 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 4 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 04/02/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 04/02/2017 HEADLINE: Great vision LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: home RESULT: won 3-1 REPORT: This was a great performance for City. City's combined age of the back 4 was probably more than that of Magpies entire team (they were young). The youthfulness of the opposition did not thwart City as they set about playing some of their most positive hocky of the season. Within minutes, City had their first short corner - a miss played pass lead to Shaun Ferris tucking away the opening goal. Yet more positive play lead to a second short corner. There was no messing as Geofff Spencer smashed it into the corner. City did not buckle in the second half as they added another goal through Geoff Spencer. Magpies finally scored with the last play of the game to make a respectable 3-1 victory to City. It was also worth noting that it was only after the game that City noticed that they had a man extra throughout the game - they thought they were just working hard off the ball to create the extra man!

L (0-5) 28/01/2017 - M5 vs Norwich Dragons 3 (A / L) NOT SO GOOD |

MENS 5TH XI - 28/01/2017 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (A) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 28/01/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 28/01/2017 HEADLINE: Not so good LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE:away RESULT:lost 5-0 REPORT: Having 15 players is sometimes a blessing, particularly when you have a long away trip to Ipswich, but not when you are down the road to one of the teams pushing for promotion. We started off the more positive of the two teams with a few early chances. After soaking up the pressure, the opposition hit us quickly on the break with 4 goals in about 5 minutes which shaped the outcome of the game. City worked hard before the break and created more chances but they did not take them. Dragons picked up another quick goal afte the break which ended the contest. Some positives to take, but lots to learn

MENS 5TH XI - 21/01/2017 VS LOWESTOFT RAILWAY 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 21/01/2017 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 21/01/2017 HEADLINE: Lack of legs! LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: home RESULT: lost 1-2 REPORT: After the fireworks of the 'friendly' two weeks ago, a large crowd came to see if there would be a second helping of entertainment. City started off the more positive with some excellent interplay with the forwards. Ali Clabburn and Ash Bird were constant threats. It was Ash Bird who broke the deadlock with a goal which took place in slow motion - there was a biblical moment with the parting of the Red Sea as Ash gave City the lead. City remained positive and had the majority of the possession. In the second half the City legs went as they started to fade. The opposition capitalised with two late goals. It was interesting to see that a number of the opposition team then jumped in cars to race back for their 1st team game v our 4s - fortunately, our 4s were too good for them! Our game was disappointing but lots of positives to take.

Geoff Spencer gave the 5s the lead from a PC before Railway were reduced to 9 for their usual behaviour! It was at this point however they were at there most deadliest when the managed to scramble home a PC of their own. Overall probably a fair result.

MENS 5TH XI - 17/12/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 17/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 17/12/2016 HEADLINE: 2-2 Draw in Friendly Christmas Game! FRIENDLY VENUE: Taverham High School RESULT: 2-2 REPORT: Two Rees Leonards goals after Dragons had taken the lead in the 1st half looked to have been enough for the 5s to win but a late Dragons equaliser in the dying minuets meant it was a draw, a tough result to take for the 5s.

MENS 5TH XI - 03/12/2016 VS IPSWICH CRANES (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 03/12/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 03/12/2016 HEADLINE: Game of two halves LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: home RESULT: won 3-2 REPORT: This certainly was a game of two halves. City burst out of the blocks with a high tempo. Within minutes we had our first short corner of the game. With a scene close to the parting of the Red Sea, Geoff Spencer had all the time in world before hitting the side fence! Within minutes City were on the attack again with some neat interplay. Ralph Jackman set up Adie Land for the opening goal. City kept up the pressure with some exciting link play. With another short corner looming, Geoff made the most of generous defending to allow Adie Land to tap in his second goal. Adie Marr was a threat all afternoon as he took his opportunity to add a third goal for City. Clearly an inspirational team-talk from the captain did the trick during the break as a team in total control all of a sudden looked all over the place. Cranes took full advantage of some sloppy City play to get a foothold back in the game with two quick goals. City where then their own worst enemies coughing up possession too easily during the final ten minutes. Fortunately, some fine saves by Grocer and some excellent tackles from man of match, Al Paterson were enough to see the team over the line. 7th place at Christmas is not too bad - Newmarket 2s next!

LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: Home RESULT: Won 2-1 REPORT: A report is needed to BUSA to complain that UEA are not proper students - they turned up having had a quiet Friday night in, sobre and ready to play a morning match! Within minutes City had a short corner which Geoff Spencer tucked away to give the team an early lead. UEA then found their feet and attacked in waves. Young keeper, Eddie D, was outstanding and played way beyond his years. A few decisions went against City along with a yellow card for JP. This led to a feisty period before Ash Bird jumped onto the end of Geoff Spencer's aerial to round the keeper and score an excellent second goal for City. UEA threw the kitchen sink at City for the remaining 15 minutes but resolute defending and exceptional keeping saw City over the line for a well deserved victory. Only one person for man of the match - keeper, Eddie D!

City 5s had a strong first half with an equal share of the possession. There was much better interplay with the midfield linking with the forward line but the team could not quite find a cutting edge. The Dragon's keeper kept them in the game with several fine saves from a short corner routine. With the game in the balance, Dragons came out the stronger after the break. A well worked goal gave the opposition the lead and quickly saw the City heads drop. A final push came from the team but it was not enough. An improvement from last week but not enough to find any points.

Some great play from the wide through Ralph Jackman set up an opening for Ady Marr before the shot was stopped on the line by an opponent foot. Geoff Spencer stepped up for the penalty flick and crashed home the opening goal. Ash Bird sadly came up lame after only 5 minutes paving the way for youngster, George Harrad. George worked hard to earn a short corner before Rees opened his account with an impressive top corner flick. Felixstowe worked their way back into the game with two goals against the run of play before Ady Marr tapped in for the third goal. At the break, City found themselves in a comfortable position and started the second half in much the same way. Before long, Louis Hart had worked another short corner from the right before Rees stepped up for his second goal of the game. With City cruising at 4-2 they continued to pile on the pressure before Rees picked up his third with a well worked reverse hit into the top corner. With minutes remaining, Felixstowe managed to pull one goal back, but this was not enough to stop City winning with a deserved 5-3 victory. It is also worth mentioning youngster keeper, Eddie Darley, who put together several fine saves to repeat his heroics from the previous week.

At the half time break, City found themselves 3-0 and facing a moutain to climb. In the second half the team found their feet. Youngster, Louis Hart was inspirational out on the wing and scored the opening goal of the second half. City then pushed and pushed. The 2nd goal then came from a short corner - debatable as to whether it was a poor shot or a superb pass, but either way, Jason linked with the ever present, John Grange to slide in the second. Although the average age of the opposition was considerably younger, it was City who did all of the running in the final parts of the game. Several close chances were spurned before Magpies managed to close out the result.

MENS 5TH XI - 08/10/2016 VS NORWICH DRAGONS 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 08/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 08/10/2016 HEADLINE: Tough draw LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: home RESULT: 1-1 draw REPORT: This was a tough encounter against one of the favourites for the league. City got off to a great start with much of the early pressure. There were early chances for Ady Marr and Ash Bird but the Dragons keeper kept them out. After numerous chances were spurned, Dragons went against the run of play to score at the other end. A slightly dejected City team came out after the break and toiled in the midday sun. Geoff Sencer and Adam Richardson went close from short corners before Shaun Ferris was bundled over in the D. The ensuing short corner led to a shot from Ali Clabburn before fox-in-the-box, Ash Bird smashed home the equaliser. The goal did come against the run of play but no more than the hard working City team deserved. A 1-1 draw was a fair result in a very even match. Maggpies away next up!

W (4-3) 01/10/2016 - M5 vs Lowestoft Railway 2 (A / L) WET AND SOGGY AWAY VICTORY |

MENS 5TH XI - 01/10/2016 VS LOWESTOFT RAILWAY 2 (A) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 01/10/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 01/10/2016 HEADLINE: Wet and soggy away victory LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: RESULT: 4-3 win REPORT: The 5ths had the lovely away trip to Lowestoft on Saturday. The captain was looking for good pre-match preparation and had the team meet about 2hours early (hopefully he will know where Lowestoft is next time!). On arrival the pre-match preparation continued on realisation that the opposition were wearing the same colours! Fortunately, our lovely womens 6s were there before us (clearly more switched on as they had the red away shirts). At the end of their match there was a swapping of shirts with some interesting sights with many of the 5s literally squeezing into shirts. Clearly the shirt fiasco helped as the team burst into life with a quick goal from in-form, Ash Bird. Lowestoft found their feet and came back into the game with some attacks of their own - fortunately, Al Paterson decided to return from his pre-season tour of Asia to give some added grit to the defence. It was not long before red-hot, Ash Bird dribbled around three defenders to find the back of the net for the second time. The opposition came back into the game with two goals of their own. At this point the heavens decided to open with an almighty storm which saw both teams leave the field for 15 minutes. After a soaking, City certainly looked the brighter of the two teams. City quickly got back into action. Rocky want-to-be, David Broadway, thought that 'when in Lowestoft, do as Lowestoft' as he took a card for a slight altercation with a member of the opposition. This seemed to spring David into action - clearly he was simply looking for a rest - within seconds of being allowed back onto the field, fiery Broaders tapped in yet another goal (please ensure he is in your fantasy team - Broaders is a goal machine at present). Shaun Ferris then found the back of the net with a well worked team goal to give City a 4-2 lead with 5 minutes remaining. A short corner to Lowestoft was bravely stopped by Al Paterson before one of their forwards tapped in the rebound. With minutes remaining, Lowestoft threw the kitchen sink a City. Grocer made several excellent saves throughout the game, but none more important than a fine block on the line with the last play of the game. A well-earned 4-3 away victory! Man of the match, Geoff Spencer was a rock as always at the back. League leaders, Dragons 3 at home next week.

MENS 5TH XI - 24/09/2016 VS NEWMARKET 2 (H) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 24/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 24/09/2016 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: RESULT: REPORT: What a difference a week makes (probably playing at home and not in Ipswich helps)! With a star studded 5th XI the game didn't get off to the best of starts as Newmarket dominated the early exchanges. The effervescent, Ady Marr offered a great outlet to the back line as his tireless running caused problem after problem for the opposition. David Broadway and Alex Merron worked the corners well as they set up Ady for the opening goal of the game. Newmarket came back and gave another scare as a disallowed short corner let City off the hook. It didn't take long for the team to capitalise as Hoops and Felix combined to set up Broadway senior for the second goal (possibly helped by a Newmarket size 11 boot). Newmarket continued to press and made life difficult for City, but youngsters, Tom Spencer and Jack Watling held firm at the back with some impressive interplay. It wasn't long before Ady found the back of the net again after some great closing down from Alex Merron caused another mistake at the back for Newmarket. Another one of the youngsters, Mark Bailey (!!), jumped in on the action with a skillful finish putting away a waist high pass to take the score to 4-0. With Newmarket's legs starting to go, the pressure continued to build as Ady grabbed his hatrick (the team are still waiting for their jug??). It was a well deserved victory, but the games continue to come thick and fast: Lowestoft Railway away next Saturday! Well done particularly to the youngsters in the team who really impressed. Hopefully our tallisman, Ash Bird will return next week!

With a slightly disjointed warmup and preparation the game got off to the best of starts with a thundering goal from darting winger, David Broadway. Cranes responded quickly after some soft defending by City. City rallied and put together some slick inter-passing with midfielders, Adam Richardson and Declan Ordish to set up goal machine, David Broadway for his second goal of the game. Once again, Cranes came back at City with a well worked short corner routine to level the game. The game then ebbed and flowed with both teams coughing up possession to easily before Adam Richardson put City ahead for the third time in the match. City felt that they had a sniff of victory before Cranes once again came back. Some soft defending once again let Cranes in to tie the game with minutes remaining. A great run from Lee Allsop set up a break for the energetic, Mark Bailey who forced the short corner. Geoff Spencer stepped up from the back to calmly dribble around three defenders before slotting the ball into the back of the net. 4-3 up, surely with the game in the bag, Cranes came back with two late goals as City gifted them the victory for the opening game of the season. There is much for the team to take away in terms of their positive play, particularly with so many youngsters playing for the team. A home game next week will be very welcome after the delights of Ipswich!

It was a well deserved victory, but the games continue to come thick and fast: Lowestoft Railway away next Saturday! Well done particularly to the youngsters in the team who really impressed. Hopefully our tallisman, Ash Bird will return next week!
