D (2-2) 17/09/2016 - W4 vs Harleston Magpies 4 (A / L) AND WE'RE OFF ....... |

LADIES 4TH XI - 17/09/2016 VS HARLESTON MAGPIES 4 (A) TEAM: Womens 4th XI DATE: 17/09/2016 FIXTURE: Womens 4th XI VS 17/09/2016 HEADLINE: And we're off ....... LEAGUE: NORFOLK PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE:Shotford Heath RESULT:2-2 (draw) REPORT: Newly promoted Womens 4’s, had the daunting challenge of travelling to Magpies for their first league game of the season in the Norfolk Premier Division. Magpies 4’s fielded a very young team of gifted players but the Womens 4’s undeterred had experience on their side together with some equally talented players. The game began with Sue T’s words of wisdom ringing in our ears, we were to “take the game to them”. The Womens 4’s certainly had the upper hand from the off, some superb passing from midfield to the forward line kept the Magpies defence on their toes. It wasn’t long before Amelia Ellis-Baumber found herself unmarked in the ‘D’ and neatly slotted the ball home to give the Womens 4’s an early lead. Other goal scoring opportunities went astray and Magpies found themselves back in the game and equalised the score line just before half time. The second half saw a very determined Magpies and our defence heroines, Fiona Spencer and Emma Nevell, teamed with Maz Doble in goal worked tirelessly, clearing the ball and creating further chances for the Womens 4’s. One such opportunity saw Holly Robinson weave through several Magpies players and score a magnificent solo effort. A win for the Womens 4’s looked inevitable but alas with seconds to go, a Magpies player found herself unmarked on the far post and scored just before the final whistle. It is important to mention that 6 out of the 12 players playing today for the Womens 4’s had already played in the morning supporting our Womens 3’s and Womens 5’s. The whole team should be very proud of this outstanding performance. We did “take the game to them” and the sloe gin consumed before the game probably helped too! POTM: A very well deserved Fiona Spencer

The keeper made some awesome saves keeping them in the match. City eventually scored with amazing goals from Amelia Barclay and Sophia Bassett. The score at half time was 2-1 to city. A breakaway from Breckland lead to a goal against play. In the second half Sophia Bassett scored an amazing reverse stick sweep goal, and Amelia Barclay scored another 2 goals. This keeps the Norwich City 5th team as top of the league . Amelia Barclay was awarded players player of the match - well deserved. Bring on next week North Norfolk at 11.30. LADIES DEVELOPMENT XI - 17/09/2016 VS DEREHAM (A) TEAM: Womens Development XI DATE: 17/09/2016 FIXTURE: Womens Development XI VS 17/09/2016 HEADLINE: LEAGUE: NORFOLK DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE LEAGUE SPONSORS: EMPRESA LIMITED VENUE: TRF RESULT: NORWICH CITY 4 YARMOUTH 0 REPORT: Norwich started strongly with Yarmouth rarely invading the home D or threatening keeper Daisy Ford . The hard work and neat passing soon paid off when Norwich’s right forward Frances Byrne opened the scoring in the first quarter when she calmly slotted the ball past Yarmouth’s keeper. The Norwich girls continued to dominate in the second quarter and Frances Byrne scored again for the home team. A few minutes later Norwich scored a third goal when Abigail Flatt converted a short corner. After the half-time break Abigail scored again, netting a powerful slap hit sent into the D from the right by Lucy Jenkinson. Freya Myhill, Imi Shaw and Millie Wimhurst made some attacks down the left in this quarter but the Yarmouth defenders stopped them from finding the net. In the fourth quarter Norwich continued to play some great hockey, switching the ball back and round through pivot players Kate Houldey and adult helper Fongy and attacking down the right baseline by Lucy Jenkinson and Abigail Hill. However, a plucky and enthusiast Yarmouth team, still finding their feet with lots of young and brand-new-to-hockey players, worked hard to keep the home team from increasing their score past four goals. Player of the match: Kate Houldey

L (3-5) 17/09/2016 - M2 vs Bishops Stortford (A / L) SHOW PROMISE IN OPENING DAY DEFEAT IN DIVISION 1 |

MENS 2ND XI - 17/09/2016 VS BISHOPS STORTFORD (A) TEAM: Mens 2nd XI DATE: 17/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 2nd XI VS 17/09/2016 HEADLINE: Show promise in opening day defeat in Division 1 LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 1 VENUE: Hockerill College RESULT: 5-3 Loss REPORT: City 2s had a tough day as they took on Bishops Stortford 1st XI away in their 1st game in Division 1 having achieved promotion last season. Stortford started the game fast and hard and pressed City early on as City struggled to get the ball out from the back, they soon fell 2 goals behind. Dan Cheesman worked hard for City upfront and through this managed to pull a goal back for City, however the scoreline of 2-1 at the break could of been worse had it not been for a post. City started better in the 2nd half but were undone by a well placed drag flick from a Stortford PC. At 3-1 City kept on going and one a PC which after originally breaking down fell to Alex Scott who slapped it high into the net. 3-2 and City had belief but it was short lived as once again Stortford converted another well placed flick. Stortford then really applied the pressure and hit the post once more before adding a 5th, with the game gone, Dan Cheesman managed to do another bit of magic and scored a consolation goal for the 2s. A tough day but lessons learned, POTM: Dan Cheesman

MENS 3RD XI - 17/09/2016 VS CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY 3 (H) TEAM: Mens 3rd XI DATE: 17/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 3rd XI VS 17/09/2016 HEADLINE: A newly formed City 3s squad struggle to cope with lively Cambridge University students LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 2 NORTH VENUE: TAVERHAM RESULT: CITY III 1, CAMBRIDGE UNI III 6 REPORT: This was the first encounter of Division 2N hockey for newly promoted City 3s, fortunately at home and against a Cambridge University side recently promoted and bouncing back from Division 3NW to Division 2N. This was a newly formed squad for the City 3s this season, injection of lost of youth and a return of some of the experienced players from the previous season's promotion team, so it was likely to take some time to get into the game and begin to play as a team. The outcome was pretty much as expected, the scoreline not reflecting the play but maybe more highlighting how the University students were better at creating chances in the final third and causing the City keeper to be busy. The only chance of the game coming to Mark Fletcher, a break away goal where he was able to find lots of space at the top of the opposition circle and fired the ball high into the room of the Cambridge goal. The opposition however had sealed the game at this point and when the final whistle blew it was a loss of 1-6 for City 3s and time for them to build upon elements of their game as they take to the road and play away at Cambridge City.

L (0-6) 17/09/2016 - M4 vs Bury St Edmunds (H / L) NOT A GREAT START TO THE SEASON |

MENS 4TH XI - 17/09/2016 VS BURY ST EDMUNDS (H) TEAM: Mens 4th XI DATE: 17/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 4th XI VS 17/09/2016 HEADLINE: Not A Great Start To The Season LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: Taverham RESULT: Lost 0-6 REPORT: The least said about this one the better. Suffice to say Bury 1's (newly relegated from Div 3) were very serious about bouncing straight back to Div 3 at the first attempt. With a fit 15 man squad, all hungry for success on a hot day, this one was a little one sided. 3-0 at half time, cue City's Ady Marr who managed to carve out their best openings early in the second half, but only slightly off target and no reward! Three more goals from Bury later and things to work on for next week!

L (4-5) 17/09/2016 - M5 vs Ipswich Cranes (A / L) NARROW DEFEAT |

MENS 5TH XI - 17/09/2016 VS IPSWICH CRANES (A) TEAM: Mens 5th XI DATE: 17/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 5th XI VS 17/09/2016 HEADLINE: Narrow defeat LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 4 NORTH EAST VENUE: St Joseph's Ipswich RESULT: 5-4 (lost) REPORT: This was the opening league game of the new season. With a slightly disjointed warmup and preparation the game got off to the best of starts with a thundering goal from darting winger, David Broadway. Cranes responded quickly after some soft defending by City. City rallied and put together some slick inter-passing with midfielders, Adam Richardson and Declan Ordish to set up goal machine, David Broadway for his second goal of the game. Once again, Cranes came back at City with a well worked short corner routine to level the game. The game then ebbed and flowed with both teams coughing up possession to easily before Adam Richardson put City ahead for the third time in the match. City felt that they had a sniff of victory before Cranes once again came back. Some soft defending once again let Cranes in to tie the game with minutes remaining. A great run from Lee Allsop set up a break for the energetic, Mark Bailey who forced the short corner. Geoff Spencer stepped up from the back to calmly dribble around three defenders before slotting the ball into the back of the net. 4-3 up, surely with the game in the bag, Cranes came back with two late goals as City gifted them the victory for the opening game of the season. There is much for the team to take away in terms of their positive play, particularly with so many youngsters playing for the team. A home game next week will be very welcome after the delights of Ipswich!

L (1-5) 17/09/2016 - M6 vs Pelicans 4 (A / L) CONVINCINGLY BEATEN |
---|
MENS 6TH XI - 17/09/2016 VS PELICANS 4 (A) TEAM: Mens 6th XI DATE: 17/09/2016 FIXTURE: Mens 6th XI VS 17/09/2016 HEADLINE: Convincingly beaten LEAGUE: EAST DIVISION 6 NORTH EAST VENUE: Pelicans RESULT: Lost 1-5 REPORT: Rob Coyle had to be at his best to keep the team in the game for the first match of the league season. Up against it from the first minute Rob played the game of his life to keep Pelicans at bay for long periods of the first half. We went behind and then again before Cushion kept us in the game following an overlapping run involving Dave Tann who must have put his pacemaker on full as he ran further than he has done before prior to an accurate cross into the D that found Cushion who fired (well poked) home. Normal service resumed in the second half with the well oiled Pelicans creating chance after chance and Rob keeping them at bay. Copping received a green for his persistent fouling but Pelicans deservedly put a few more into the onion basket and ended up winning 5-1 and look the team to beat in the league so far this season. One hopes that we don't have to play against teams this good in the rest of the league.
